V6 Turndowns

I've decided to save some money and get turndowns, instead of an entire catback system. I'm going with Mac mufflers, but on their site they have a ton to choose from and I'm not sure which type I'm suppose to buy.

Also, can I still get a custom H-pipe made, even though only the mufflers are being changed?

Really I'm just wanting to get rid of that ugly brown pipe that hangs down... but thought i'd make it sound a little deeper too.

You can get a sawzaw and cut the limp dick off...or die grinder, or something that cuts steel...I did it. Made it look better till new exhaust is fundable. Also if you get an h pipe made, youll have to remove the cats of course. Pick whatever ones would be easiest to hang i would assume.

Yea I'm sure i can get rid of it with the right tools. I'm just more concerned with ordering the right mufflers for turndowns. On the Mac site, they have mufflers for 3.8's with different widths and stuff. Just not sure which one to order?

The reason I decided to do this, is cus I heard a 95 v6 with flowmaster mufflers and turndowns, and it sounded pretty good.

You can put turn downs on any muffler really. I had my old Mac catback dumped. I put turn downs on my current Magnaflow catback until I get my GT rear painted then I will run the tips out the back. You can pick up turn down tips at auto parts store.

I'm gonna do this soon.. I hate that thing stickin out the back soo ugly..

How will this alter the sound? I love the way mine sounds right now. But I think if I go with turndowns it will be louder in the cabin. Thats what I want.

stanley423 07-12-2010 05:49 PM

I have turndowns that are right in the middle of my car right under where the seats are and it is loud in the cabin and sounds great. I have heard it from inside and outside taking off and you can hear the car coming down the road its a deep rumble. It doesn't sound exactly like a V8 but it sounds pretty good.

spike_africa 07-12-2010 05:54 PM

If you do the dumps at the rear near the bumper sound inside the car isn't bad at all.

krenogin 07-12-2010 09:35 PM

I'm gonna dump at the end of the muffler, i'm just worried i'll get the exhaust smell in my car. But i still have my cats on so maybe it wont.

I'm gonna do it maybe wednesday or thursday.

spike_africa 07-13-2010 08:49 AM

Since you have cats you won't notice it. I have no cats and you can notice it.

Shadow_Stang 07-13-2010 02:25 PM

What I really need help with is what mufflers to order. On the Mac site there are a bunch of different ones. I was gonna go stainless steel probably, but just need one of you guys who know a lot about cars to tell me which size I should get to fit mine. The car is stock, other than cold air intake. Just wanting some better sound.

After getting the mufflers, I was gonna get a custom H-pipe -catted, and turndowns.

Shadow_Stang 07-13-2010 02:27 PM

I don't think that link worked... but just google the mac site, and look under 3.8 mufflers.

00blkstanggt 07-13-2010 03:03 PM

I have dumps right on the mufflers, put they are angled slightly towards the rear. I definitely smell exhaust, but you get use to it. I love the sound, at low rpm the shit rumbles and shakes your balls.

krenogin 07-13-2010 06:33 PM

Alright. I'm doing this tomorrow for sure.

Shadowstang where are you from in KY?

Also I think stock piping is 2 1/4 inch. Go with single in and single out.

Get stainless unless you want ur muffler to rust out over time.

Eastern, Ky. Pikeville to be exact.

And sorry to ask such a noob question, but: I can order two mufflers right? Cus it's gonna be a dual setup, just turndowns instead of tips. And your suggeesting the 2 1/4 inch? I don't see that on the mac site? sorry.. i know i'm making this more complicated than it is.

Should I just order the first set of mufflers on the page, cus they have the same size piping as my car. 2.25" -and I'm not gonna be supercharging anyways. or go for 2.5"?

(if the link doesn't work, google mac)

krenogin 07-13-2010 09:48 PM

DUDE I'M FROM PAINTSVILLE. Like 20 miles or so away.

2 1/4 inch = 2.25"

And yes that should work.

Alright, so I'll order 2 stainless steel mufflers, 2.25". I was gonna get the one that says offset in/offset out. To be honest, I don't know a lot about mufflers... just want to get some better sound before summer ends.

But yea dude, if you're ever around Pikeville, just look for me. Laser red with staggered black bullitts and the gt hood scoop. lol

krenogin 07-14-2010 04:06 PM

Alright guys. I just had the muffler shop redo my exhaust.

20 bucks, and they cut and redid my hangers and cut my ugly limp dick tailpipe off but wanted to keep it and do my job for free. But i paid cause i never knew if id wanna put it back on later.

Anyways, WOW.

It vibrates the shit out of everything at low RPM's and sounds sooooo great. and its SUPER DEEP.

But at high rpms it now sounds VERY SIXXYYYY CYLINDER, which before it was kinda okay.

However, I'm still happy with the new sound. It like shakes the ground like some of my friends GT's with turndowns..

Its kinda like a sound system, you dont feel it too much in your car, but like in other peoples cars you can feel it. hard to explain.

Ohh and the rear is sooo much better looking without that ugly ass limp dick turndown.

Shadowstang, we'll meet up sometime and ill let you listen and you can decide then.

spike_africa 07-14-2010 04:51 PM

You want two 2 1/4" offset in/out mufflers. I don't have stainless and its still totally fine 6 years or so later on. I don't live in the salt belt though.

Yea man, I'd like to hear it in person. Did you get custom mufflers at the shop? or order them from somewhere? I don't want mine to sound annoying or anything... I just want that deep sound at the low rpm's. Alot of people around here ask if mine is a V8 (when it's turned off and they can't hear it) Don't know why... the must not know anything about mustangs... like gt emblems for one, and the limp dick. But yea, you should put up a video man.

Thanks man, I guess I won't go stainless steel then. Just gonna keep turndowns a year anyway, then get the full mac catback next summer after the gt rear bumper is on. Thanks for the help guys...

and the mufflers dumped look pretty sweet from the rear :)

(Edit: aw shit, this thread is kind of old, lol)
