Haha bro ya gotta experiment. O/D basically either, sets the rpms constantly higher, or if your on the highway goin 70 keeps it in 4th. Its meant for doushes who like to TOW **** with a CAR...Basically use it for when ya wanna go fast but dont give a rats *** about fuel. When you push it the first time it will turn it off, and make your RPMs shoot up, hitting the button again turns it on so it goes back to normal.

Usually yup, just push it once for racin fun. Depending on how hard your pushin your car though you might wanna let off after around 5500rpms just so the car can shift. :P

It doesn't make your car any faster or slower... Overdrive is just a more fuel efficient gear for cruising. Turning overdrive off will just prevent the car from shifting into overdrive.

Overdrive is 4th gear in your car.

overdrive is forth gear, its only called overdrive because the gear ratio is less than 1:1
so for example
in first gear the input shaft on the transmission might spin 3 times the output shaft might spin 1 time(3:1)
in 2nd the input shaft might spin 2 times the output shaft might spin 1 time(2:1)
in 3rd the input shaft might spin 1 time the output shaft might spin (1:1)
In overdrive the input shaft might spin .8 times the output shaft might spin 1 time(.8:1)

It's in the owner's manual. O/D Off is for towing or going up VERY steep hills. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make you go faster, although it sure gives the illusion that you do.

Noooooo overdrive is 5th gear.. trust me, you will call me crazy, but i swear to you. All you auto's out there, find a nice open stretch of road with people u wont **** of by going slow. Come to a complete stop and turn your overdrive off. And accelerate very slowly. Count ur starting gear as one, and u will get to 4th gear by 30mph. and when u hit 40-42 somewhere in there press ur OD buttion and turn it back on and u will be in 5th. Trust me! i will make a vid if u dont believe me. but if ur gonna race turn ur OD off and ur trac off. IF your at stock gearing.. i can hit 70 by putting my car in 2, then hit D.. in overdrive i run 100mph at 3000rpm.

So you're saying you DO go faster with O/D off? If you know what to do? If I fool around with it and 2nd gear, sometimes I can make my car scream like a wild banshee and accelerate like mad. I was told it would blow up my engine though :\

In my 2002, It's the middle button right behind the shifter, below the head unit.

That makes sense, you make more torque in lower gears

you will accelerate faster in lower gears but you will reach a higher speed in overdrive

Your car has 4 gears not 5. Only the 05+ cars have the new 5 speed autos.

For 05+ it says O/D allows for changed for first 5 gears while having it off alows for quick changes for all gears... which is still 5.. O/D for 05+ are just for gas saving while turning it off your car changes faster and climbs faster but it will still be same speed in long run. but for quick take offs having it off will produce more theoretical tk.

Some mustangs have it and some dont, i have a 2000 V6 and its under the CD player and to the left. Yours may not have it, i THINK it was an option for the buyer.

??? I always thought shutting O/D off was just like shutting your 4th gear off and dont allowing it to change up untill you turn it on again!
AND 99-04 ONLY HAVE 4 GEARS!! ON AUTO ANYWAYS

Only 2005 and newer Mustangs came with the five speed(5R55) automatic transmission. All older cars came with a four speed(either the AOD, AODE, OR THE 4R70W) automatic. Once you are in third or overdrive gear going at a steady pace, the torque converter clutch will lock up and that is why you think you are feeling an extra gear.
But don't take my word for it, just ask my ASE certification certificate for automatic transmissions.
