manually shifting my auto

I know "just buy a manual" I have my reasons for the auto tranny..

Now a bit ago I raced my friend "fellow v6 owner" the only difference is his is a manual.

I did in fact win, but here is my issue.

When I shift manually...there is a delay.

Can I fix this with my lil SCT..there must be a way to get the response I want...aside from "getting a manual"

oh and side note...lol I'm sure it doesnt, but I'll ask anyway...with a ratchet shifter "street fighter" can i shift all 5 gears, or just 1-3 like on the regular shifter...

As always thanks for the advice

a shifter knob will not modify gears or transmission

armyboy 08-01-2009 02:40 PM

tuning then?

zigzagg321 08-01-2009 03:21 PM

you may be able to change the shift point of the transmission with a tune....depends on the car and the tuner. There also may be tuning that can increase the line pressure in the transmission, thus making the shifts firmer.

Automatics that dont have a "steptronic" function built into them are not meant to be shifted manually. And doing so with a "normal" automatic, such as in the Mustang isnt going to make you faster. You are better off just letting the automatic do what it was designed to do...which is shift on its own.

Indeed. I must admit that being able to manually shift an auto trans can be pretty fun though. My Audi had that feature, and it was great for breaking up a boring commute. It was made even better by the fact that I recoded the trans with a scan tool, disabling the rev limiter and 2nd gear start feature (from the factory trans started off in 2nd gear when in manual mode.) Doing that recode also firmed up the shifts a great deal. It's amazing what you can do with a scan tool nowadays :)

you don't manually shift an auto for any reason but being too out of touch with yourself to know you should have bought a manual.

DO NOT manually shift your auto unless you've had it modified with a manual valve body, otherwise you're wasting time and making your car slower. If it doesn't shift how you want, then have the tune changed.

Or, you can ask google these kinds of questions and it'll ask yahoo and microsoft will answer:

You can just change the mph you want the car to shift at in the tuner rather then trying to do it with the shifter.

The aftermarket shifters for the auto cars are just for looks and it will still operate just like stock unless you put in a manual valve body in the tranny. Then you will have to manually shift the gears 24/7.

Dustin you're right for the most part. With the factory shifter it is very easy to shift from 1st to drive and then the trans is just going to shift at the programmed shift points. With an aftermmarket shifter like the B&M Hammer the shifter mechanism will only allow one gear change at a time so you can't accidently miss second gear. I had the Hammer in my fox and loved it ;)

the cool thing about an auto and doin the manual shift, you can like powershift and its simple to do. in my auto i can redline it, and hit second and the hole car will shoot sideways and squeal off my big 275's. its fun, but im quitting. its bound to mess something up soon.

You mean it won't do that when you let the auto shift normally?

krenogin 08-03-2009 07:35 PM

nutuh, because it wont redline. it'll hit 5.2k or whatever n shift, if i redline it in first to bout 5.5 or so, when i put it in second it squeals. and is very dangerous when its wet.

Oh, maybe it's just cause mine's tuned to shift at 6k if I floor it as well as a shift pressure bump.

+1 i Killed a 4r70w lol.. then went to a 75w (mach1 transmission) and then now a TR3650

krenogin 08-04-2009 11:14 PM

in your tranny swap to a manual,, did u have to do any computer/wiring harness work?

Stephen4036IsBack 08-04-2009 11:17 PM

I used the 3650's Harness and just had to splice some wires to extend them. Other than that VMP Tuning tunes my ECU to be a "5 Speed" but he said something about V6's needing the computer from the Manual Car.. Im not sure.. I would call VMP or who ever will be tuning your car.

Switch 08-04-2009 11:18 PM

After watching Stephen's tranny swap. Unless you have some real reason to do a swap (his was because his tranny went out), I'd sell the car and buy a manual instead of swapping.

Stephen4036IsBack 08-04-2009 11:40 PM

lol come on ryan, anyone can do it
