Gears

4.10s make you accelerate faster then 3.73s. the rule of thumb is that u get 4.10s for an auto, and 3.73s for a manual. it'll really wake up the car and make u accelerate quickly. you'll need to modify the optional settings on ur tune for ur s197, although seeing ur list of mods, i bet that you already have a hand held tuner. if not, then you seriously need to get one.

but srsly, v6mustangman... get the 4.10s for ur sixer. are you planning on a supercharger any time soon?? if so, just stick with the 3.73s.

thanks guys yea I don't have a tuner yet I know I need to get one if I do get one though can i still run regular gas or will I have to get a higher grade. As for the supercharger want one but that's prob not gonna happen for some time due the cost of them.

What happens is you run the Gas that the tune is set up for. So you can get it set up for 89 octane or whatever. THe best place to get a tuner is vmptuning.com
Justin will make 3 customs tunes for you specifically for the mods you have on your car and you tell him which octanes you want. I got a 91 Gas saver tune, a 91 Performance tune, and a 93 Performance tune!

ur srsly running an s197 with those mods, and no tuner??? dude, i've heard that a tuner is necessary for an s197 even with an intake. get one. yes you can run regular gas, although i recommend the 93 octane. a friend of mine runs the 93 performance, and he figured out that the horsepower gained verses the cost of 89 is actually worth it.

Deathdiesel,
gears add "umph" or "giddy up" to the lower end of your rpm range, but decrease your top end speed. Not a big deal, you'll likely never see your top end anyway. Install wise, it can be difficult if you've never done it before. Especially for you since you had problems installing a shifter ****.
V6MustangMan,
First off, custom tunes are tunes made specifically YOUR car and the modifications done to it. Preloaded tunes are generic or popular tunes for various modifications.
As far as the SCT LiveWire tuner, don't do it. It's permanently mounted (that's how it was explained to me anyway) on your windsheild. Although it gives you significant amounts of information with a fairly user friendly interface, you'll be much better off with a quality SCT XCal series tuner.

Ugh im never gunna live down the shifter **** am i? And hey i never had any problems with my CAI installing it And yeah i was considering getting this kit whenever i change my gears. http://www.americanmuscle.com/xcal2-...r-oil-kit.html

get the xcal 3 power flash tuner. the livewire tuner is the same thing, only its also made to mount on to your dash and do live data logging. also has a shift light. not really worth an extra $200.
as far "help" i don't know what you mean. they improve acceleration and make the car more fun. gears cost a little less then $200, and only get Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP) gears. install is about $300 with the cost of fluids and maybe more if the bearings need to be replaced.

Nope.
That's a good kit. But especially for you, I'd get a shop to install it. I've done a gear swap before (not on a mustang, but changing gears is pretty much the same thing regardless of the car) and I'd still rather have a shop do it for me. Also, if you're getting gears GET THE BEARING KIT. Anytime you're playing around in the rear, it's a good idea to change the bearings unless you don't have many miles on them. The bearing kit comes with all of the fun stuff you'll want to swap out: Front/Rear pinion bearing, Gasket, Carrier shims and bearings, diff. bearings, crush sleeve, pinion nut, ring gear bolts and some other stuff.

Change them. Maybe 3,000 miles would be okay with the same bearings. 46,000? No way, you'll most likely have gear whine with the old bearings in there.

Wth did i do to you? First off pretty much anything im doing from this point forward is gunna be with my dad, whos been a mechanic for 22 years so im pretty sure hell know what to do. And the only way id be considering doing it myself with my dad is if it was really easy and apparantly its not so i wont. And since you guys think its a good idea t change the bearings, do you think this is a good kit for that? http://www.stangmods.com/8-8-Gear-In...660-m4210c.htm And how much total do you think id be lookin at for buying and installing gears+bearing kit? Also whats the diff between a 8.8 rear end and a 7.5 rear end?
#25
7.5'' is the V6, 8.8 is the GT differential. And no on that bearing kit. AM has a much better one for much cheaper HERE. Might want to add a Posi to your list too so that you're not doing those 1 wheel burnouts like PCola.

Unless the differential was swapped to an 8.8'' without you knowing, you have a 7.5'', trust me. Didn't you say that your dad is/was a mechanic? Why don't you ask him some of these things instead of hijacking this thread?

lol... n00bs. my dad was around cars for years, and when i got my mustang he made me read the owners manual and the haynes repair manual. i'm so glad i did because i kind of avoided a lot noob questions.
