improving my exhaust

i just put on a new magnaflow catback duel exhaust on my 99 v6 stang, but its an improvement dont get me wrong but i want it louder. im new to this stuff but i was looking into headers shorty or long tube, not quite which one would be a better pick? i also have a cold air intake that i havent installed yet, but im just looking at some opinions on how to make my stang really roar

zigzagg321 03-18-2009 08:59 AM

the v6 will never roar... if your looking for that GT sound...well...get a GT... you already have probably the best sounding setup for the 6cyl already.

you could get rid of your cats...that would make it louder.. but raspy...nature of the 6.

^ What Zig said.

SeanStang's sixer sounds pretty damn good. Maybe he will chime in and tell you what exhaust set up he runs.

NewMustangMan 03-18-2009 10:15 AM

I say get the LTs man that will add some great sound

probiker427 03-18-2009 01:56 PM

I'm also wondering how to remove the stock y-pipe to get a x pipe or h pipe? but i have the magnafllow catback duels on so i was wondering what my options were? thanks for the input! Very Apprectiated

3.8LMustang 03-18-2009 02:44 PM

ummm ya h-pipe and put turn down pipes after the mufflers

Lazerred6 03-18-2009 02:52 PM

Speaking of exhaust I'm fianally getting mine fixed on saturday. I've been running ghetto dumps for the last year since everything past the y rusted and I had to cut it off lol

H pipes for sure, the sixxer is even firing so it keeps the pressure equal. You won't be able to get much more sound out of the Magnaflows, they're a pretty mild setup for just about any car, V6/GT/Mach/Cobra they aren't exactly known for being a very loud or agressive brand. Longtubes may give you a little deeper/throatier sound, but it's really not worth the money IMHO.. JM2C.

Must See 03-18-2009 08:02 PM

basically there's no way to make the exhaust louder without it sounding like crap?

Switch 03-18-2009 08:03 PM

Long tubes will give you a pretty nice bit of power, too.

EDIT: Long tubes will make it louder without making it sound like crap.

They do, but not for the v6.

Mac long tube headers

Mac ceramic coated long tube headers

Must See 03-18-2009 08:13 PM

not trying to Hijack your thread but i still am technically on topic.

Damn beat me to the links

how would i know if I have a

V6 Mustangs with a shorty mid pipe only

Switch 03-18-2009 08:23 PM

I guess a shorty mid-pipe *could* fit on a pair of shorty headers provided the rest of the exhaust is custom. I've never seen that done before, though. If you have pics of the exhaust from the headers back to the midpipe I could tell you.

Oh, yeah you have to have a shorty h or x pipe in order for the long tubes to work. The long tubes extend farther back down the car than the stock headers do, so in order to balance that, you need a shorter midpipe.

You probably have a regular mid-pipe, but if you want to check just look at it. If you can't tell, just take a picture and I'll tell you.

it is kinda pricey and time consuming still undecided if i want to get me some.

Honestly, a V6 is a V6.. It's never going to have that deep throaty sound that everyone loves. Even with a mild cam setup and with LT's it's still going to sound like a 6 cylendar engine. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a thing against the sixxers, but the engine is almost always going to be louder than the exhaust no matter what you do...

might as well save and get an 8.8 rearend, built tranny, better brakes then a 5.4l

5.4? That's weaksauce. Sneak into boss R&D headquarters and steal that 7 liter prototype they've been workin on.

lazyhomie1908 03-18-2009 10:48 PM

IMO if you want loud and nice setup for a sixxer go with a cherrybomb I had that on my last sixer and it sounded badass not nasty loud but a clean deep loud even though it was a sixer. Everyone who heard it loved it.

probiker427 03-19-2009 07:44 PM

im wondering if i can get a shorty x pipe with long tube headers but i dont think im going to be able to if i have the catback duel magnaflow on there that connect right to the stock y pipe ? correct? what are my options?

Switch 03-19-2009 07:46 PM

Yes you can get a shorty x with the long tubes. Why do you still have the y-pipe?

probiker427 03-19-2009 07:53 PM

i wasnt sure if i was able to becuase the magnaflow is a catback and has a single connect to the Y pipe

Switch 03-19-2009 08:02 PM

You won't be able to use that magnaflow catback on it. You shouldn't have gotten a y-pipe catback to begin with though. That's probably one of the big reasons why your exhaust doesn't sound as good as you like.

probiker427 03-19-2009 08:04 PM

what about a shorty headers? does that improve it at all? cuz i just bought the magnaflow so its a waste to just get another

spike_africa 03-19-2009 08:08 PM

An exhaust shop can cut the Y out of your catback and connect it to the mid pipe for you.

probiker427 03-20-2009 08:17 AM

how much do u think that will cost me ?
