true duals or H-pipe?
Can someone inform me of the sound/performance difference between having a custom h-pipe made with this catback (http://www.ninosport.com/MAC-Cat-Bac...=2&category=99), or having true duals (two separate pipes from each header with no crossover pipe) made with the same catback?
Also, will having 2.5" piping make me lose too much back pressure with either of those setups? |
The sound of an H-pipe vs. True duals is very similar. The only real difference in sound I can tell is that with an H you get the random "pop pop" sound which is exhaust pulses moving across the H to equalize the pressure in the pipes. Otherwise it sounds the same to me. I would get whatever setup is cheap for you weither its a custom made true dual setup or the H with the catback.
Unless you are going to run boost or some nitrous on your car stick with 2 1/4" exhaust piping is the rule of thumb. |
i was wondering about that also but im going with magnaflow cat-back i think sounds way better.. just my opinion..
|
Just a bolt on fake dual setup like the magnaflow is not going to add any power hardly at all.
|
oh yea i meant bolting on an h-pipe or true duals with a magnaflow cat-back.

I'm kinda worried about about bringing only the muffler and tips to the shop and having them fabricate the entire tubing over the rear axle and everything because I'm not sure how good of a job they would do without a mandrel bend machine. and if I go with the first option, would the back pressure be ok even with the 2.5" catback as long as I get the fabricated straight tubing 2.25"? Thanks for all the help, really! |
You would be fine with bringing in a catback and having them cut the Y and make a true dual setup for you. Also the 2.25" to 2.5" will not be a problem. Your car will have enough piping that you will be fine I would not worry about the elusive "backpressure" people like to harp on with performance exhaust systems.

Also, will I need to buy just one hanger set for the catback, and they can reuse the stock one that is on my car? |
Fail on their part. every mustang (minus the 99/01,03-04, and 00 R model Cobra's which all have the IRS rear) has a solid rear end in them. They are stupid, plus the 05+ cars have a 3 bar setup with only 1 control arm up top. The Pre 05 cars have 4 bars with 2 upper control arms so the 05 would not even bolt in if you wanted it.
I would just get whatever mufflers you like and have them fab the rest, but if you want to bring in a catback just get one for a 96-04 GT and you will be fine. You will need one more exhaust hanger as the v6 already has one. Have you thought about just having them make you side pipes and then no need to worry about piping over the rear axle. Would be cheaper to make as well because its less material needed. |

Would there be any benefit at all from picking the GT over the V6 version? (http://www.ninosport.com/MAC-Cat-Bac...=2&category=99 and http://www.ninosport.com/MAC-Cat-bac...=2&category=96) I really haven't thought much about side pipes, I'm not really a big fan of them for my style of Mustang. P.S. I hope everyone had a very Merry CHRISTmas!!! =D |
I cant see a difference either on the GT or V6 one so get the cheaper one.

great! Thanks for all the help! You answered every question I had!

Dustin, I don't see a difference either, but I do remember seening in an add - specifically a cataglog that states that there is a difference - if I remember it was an alignment issue. I will dig it out later and post first thing in the AM. BTW, JDank you were curious this is what mine looks like from the underneath. |
I would make sure they aren't just showing the wrong picture for the V6. A lot of times when it says V6 they ship the catback that connects to the Y pipe
|
Good point Dave.
|
I checked on MAC's official website to make sure it was the true dual setup and not for the stock y pipe. I got the V6 version. Thanks for all the tips and advice. Oh, and thanks for showing me that picture, I have been curious to see what one would look like.

i just got the pypes exhaust with the xpipe...so true dual i think is awesome
|
That's not true dual, as that's when you run one pipe back for each bank of cylinders with no crossover. But that x setup is better then stock for sure.
|
I literally just walked in from installing my exhaust, and I thought I would let you guys know how it went since you all helped tremedously in my decisions! I went with true dual (no crossover) and the MAC catback I posted. I think it sounds AWESOME(for a V6 of course ;) )! SOOOO much better than stock. Tomorrow I just have to fix one of the pipes rattling against the gas tank. but it sounds really nice and deep (in my opinion). Thanks, everyone, for all the help!
