Part and install costs: Is this typical?

From what I read here and elsewhere the response I got back from a local shop sounds odd to me.
The prices seem drasticly higher than what I've found online though I don't think the install cost is to outragous. What do you guys think?

Thank you for choosing Auto Performance Specialist for your performance needs.
first they dont make a adjustable tuner for the v-6 just the v-8.
But i do have a tuner that provides about 10% gain in horsepower but is none adjustable.
It's a piggy back system made by JET and it will cost you $295.38 carry out with nothing else ordered.

3.73 gears made by richmond will cost you $287.78 plus the install kit made by MOTIVE is $44.99.
And to install gears and tuner is about $330.00 pluss the cost of rear diff fluid.
if you purchase the tuner with the gears the tuner will cost you 283.50
if you have any questions please call at (xxx)xxx-xxxx our e-mail me and i will get back to you as soon as i can.
thank you for choosing auto perfromance

this is a message from a shop by me...

the only kind of gears we have are FRPP bc those are the best. 3.73s installed are 500.00 and that includes redline gear fluid depending on how your bearings looks when we take the cover off we might replaced those and thats just a couple extra bucks. 4.10s are 550$ installed
the tuner is extra with a canned tune.

M_Stang 10-23-2008 09:55 AM

Ya ummmm to me the Prices sound a bit higher than normal but you should check a couple of different places because you never know
Or here is a thought you can buy all of your own stuff for cheeper online or where ever it is you find it, and then have them install it :)

stanger00 10-23-2008 10:11 AM

buy your parts seperate because they are just trying to sell their sponsors products.

buy FRPP gears and a X-cal or Diablosport tuner

expect to pay 200-400 for a gear install with bearing kit and fluids.

01FR500 10-23-2008 10:17 AM

A gear install should be somewhere around $275, not including any parts.

Stephen4036 10-23-2008 12:18 PM

Lomatta which is like orlandos best performance shop charges 250 and Real St. Performance is like 300

milk213 10-23-2008 01:33 PM

Just to give some perspective on the price from a dealership. They said this:

Questions first. Is the gear kit Ford or Spicer brand? Is the slip-limiting clutch kit already assembled? Is there fluid
with the kit? (non-Ford or Spicer gears may turn out noisy!)Range of $508.80 to $664.80 for transformation project depending on answers to above questions.

This was for the gears and the t-lok.

287 for just the gears?.... try 187... 287 is way high.

check oiut americanmuscle.com they have some gear packages that include the gears, the tuner, the bearing kit, and the fluid. the gear install should run roughly 250-300

Acttacus 10-23-2008 05:26 PM

I got quoted $650 inc. tax for 3.73 gear, T-lok and install all up from my local ford performance shop. Your price seems a little on the high side.

dkt0404 10-23-2008 06:12 PM

Agreed. I'm going to call around but I haven't found many shops around the Springfield Missouri area. You guys got any recomendations?

stangcharger 10-23-2008 09:15 PM

what is he meaning by there is not an adjustable tuner for a v6, just a v8? is he talking about like an xcal? i'm tired and may not be getting this.

engineman312 10-23-2008 09:17 PM

yeah, that got me too... IIRC, the guy as an 03. plenty of tuners out there for that. SCT is the bestest

dkt0404 10-23-2008 09:29 PM

yeah I emailed him back and asked about that with a link. Maybe he's thinking of something else or isn't that up on things (not a good sign if it's the latter)

spike_africa 10-24-2008 07:53 AM

Considering he wants to sell you a "jet" chip which the biggest piece of garbage out there I would say he does not know much about modern cars and you might wanna shop else where.

dkt0404 10-24-2008 09:56 AM

thought you guys may be intrested to see his answer.

yes it is about the same thing. its called a piggy back sytem because it changes the peramiters in your ecm to increase horsepower. by the way i had a 1999 v-6 mustang that ran 11.5 quarter mile and my 3.73 gears and under drive pullys were my favorite uprades. call our e-mail if you have any questions.

spike_africa 10-24-2008 10:04 AM

You really need to just walk away and shop else where. He is full of shit.

dkt0404 10-24-2008 10:08 AM

agreed. just thought you guys would be mildly amused by his response.

I'm already looking for more shops but the pickings are slim around here.

Anyone know of a good shop in the Springfield/Branson/Joplin Missouri area?

spike_africa 10-24-2008 10:15 AM

if your looking to buy parts do it online.

Mostly for someone good to install it. I can do some things but I seriously lack the knowlage and experiance for things like gears.

not to mention he says to call his email :D

dkt0404 10-28-2008 07:47 AM

I thought the last guy was bad

This shop is listed as one of the best buisnesses in the Springfield area.

Daniel, We can install anything you want, however you understand that switching gear ratios will affect overall drivability & fuel mileage. Assuming you have the 7.5 rear end, you would spend around $2500.00 parts & labor for 3.73:1 gears & limited slip installed. The tuner can be had for @$350.00. & a K&N filter usually runs @ $75.00 installed.
Thanks you for your inquiry.
$2500?? The parts don't cost more than $500 to $600 retail from what I've found. So he's basicly trying to charge ~$1800 for labor I think?

Even I know that seems way to high. What do you guys think?

spike_africa 10-28-2008 08:46 AM

$75 for a drop in K&N filter that takes 5 mins to install, wtf?

And 2,500bucks for a gear install you can get a built 8.8" for way less than that.

Looks like you are having bad luck thus far, just keep looking you will find a good one eventually.

dkt0404 10-28-2008 09:18 AM

Will do. i've got emails into several other shops.

Do you think a collision repair shop would be a option? I'd think they would have to replace all kinds of parts to rebuild a car after it got ran into.

3.8LMustang 10-28-2008 09:24 AM

the most ill ever pay for 4.10 gears/t-lok/bearing rebuild kit/gear oil/friction modifier/labor, is about 700 bucks

NewMustangMan 10-28-2008 09:36 AM

Yeah i really cant believe they quoted that much. $2500 that is crazy. On the Collision repair shop i think it may depend on the shop and you will want to make sure they do good work. Well i hope you find a good shop soon.

dkt0404 10-29-2008 06:34 AM

LOL

Me:

$2500 seems very high when I was expecting something along the lines of 300 to 600 for the install.
If I brought you the parts how much would it cost to just have them installed?
Their response:

Due to warranty issues, we don't normally install customer supplied parts. You can sign a waiver & we will install them, however there will be no warranty whatsoever on the labor. Also understand there is a discount on labor when we supply the parts. Even so, you would probably still be looking close to $1000.00 labor.
:saywha: Thats just plain sad lol

3.8LMustang 10-29-2008 06:50 AM

ummm no they shouldnt even go over 300 bucks to install it if u brought all the parts

they are just trying to get sum money off of you

dkt0404 10-29-2008 10:16 AM

It's almost funny how full of themselves they sound isn't it? No way I'd go with these money grubbers.

Me:

I'm confused about why it costs so much. Just about every other shop I've got a quote from has been in the $300 to $500 range. What would I be getting for the extra double or triple the price if I went with you guys instead?
Them:

Setting up new gears in a differential is very time consuming to do it correctly. Pinion depth & gear backlash are critical to quiet operation & longevity. Almost a full day can be spent on setting up the gears correctly. I know there are repair facilities that will "set up" gears for less- we have seen some of this work.

spike_africa 10-29-2008 10:19 AM

If you have done a gear swap before it does not take a whole day. A few hours of labor is all that is needed to get the job done. They just have no clue and love taking advantage of people with no idea. Just find your parts online and then for things you can't do just keep on looking for a shop to install gears.
