Default Transmision fluid

Hey guys its been awhile since i have posted but ive got a quick question about transmision fluids. If anybody knows what kind is the best to use thad be great. I have a 99 manual transmision and everywhere i went today they said i should used a diffrent kind of fluid. First i went to autozone and the guy there said i needed 75-90 which i thought couldnt be right (even thought this guy said he was positive and had been working on transmisions for 30 years lol,he was full of **** i think) after that i went to advanced autoparts and they were crazy overpriced but i still bought it 75-90 from them cuz they said it "sounded about right." However thats wasnt good enough for me because if i put the wrong fluid in, its my car and i didnt want to take a chance because it sounded right to somebody i didnt know. After that i went to the ford dealer, they told me what i should get and i said thank you. However thier synthetic was 75 bucks for 2 Qt.(which is the only thing i would settle for). So they called orielys and told them what i wanted. When i got to oriely's they said that what they had in thier computers was diffrent than what the ford dealer had told them! However i bought what the ford dealer told me to get from orielys.
Once i get home i read the bottle of oil and its
Valvoline Mercon 5 fully synthetic
which seemed fine but under it reads automatic transmission fluid!
i have no idea what to do, id just like to swap it out, if anybody knows what kind i should get please let me know so i can go pick it up (id prefere synthetic), i trust you guys more than anybody at any of the stores!
thanks jake

FoMoCo has been using ATF in it's Manual transmission for @25+ years now
so get yourself some Mercon V and tell those IDIOTS at the parts stores how wrong they are and that they will screw-up other peoples manual transmission by recommending 75W90 gear oil or ANY Heavy-weight gear oil in a Ford manual trans....oh and tell 'em I SAID SO

speaking of transmission fluid, is there a resivour under the hood for the manual transmission or clutch fluid? i have driven ford rangers for work that had manual transmissions and there was a fluid container under the hood that you could visually look at and tell that the fluid was low. i have a 96 v6 manual and there is a slight whine or whistle when your foot is off the clutch. when you barely set your foot on the clutch the noise is gone. i looked around but did not see one.

The clutch is cable style not hydraulic so there is no fluid reservoir for it. No tranny has a fluid reservoir where you can see if it needs more. IF the noise goes away once you press the clutch in more then likely its the throw out bearing going bad.
