GEARS!

Looking for new gears in my 1998 v6 automatic mustang convertible. on AM.com i saw two different ones. Motive performance plus 3.73 and 4.10 gears for 7.5 in rear. whats is the difference? what is prefered? also what type of different feel would that give mt car?

ok im in the same position. i have a 98 v6 auto. ive been looking around for a wile and im told that with the auto u should prob get the 4:10's for the 7.5 rear end. thay also say that you should deff get the t-lok. look at the other v6 threads there is a bunch of stuff on hear right now about that. and for our year u will also need a new speedo gear. i found a pacage on line that was the gears the t -lok and the install kit for if i rember like $400. good deal. and on that same site the speedo gears were i think like 20 bucks. let me look for it again and ill post a like in a min.

4.10's no question for an auto.

it will give the feeling of alot of low end torque.

T-lock is a must if your doing gears, there is no reason not to while your in there.

make sure that you get the ford racing gears. none of the other gears line up right and will make some noise. also, i have a brand new ford racing t-lok for sale for $150+shipping if anyone is interested.

Motive makes the Ford racing gears.

New guy here. I have a question on gears. Is there anyone here that runs Motive gears in their car. I just purchased Motive 4:10's for my 06 Mustang. Its a v6 auto. I seem to be hearing from others on a different board, that these are junk. I find that hard to believe from a company thats been around for over 20 years.

Now opinions are just that. I want to hear from people that actually have them and are running them. Have you had any problems? Any abnormal noise AFTER break in? Did they ever fail due to defects? I want facts, you know what they say about opinions....thanks in advance. I don't mean to hijack your thread Jerkstang, but I hated to start another gear thread.

ive had motives in since last september. they make noise sometimes and eventually i cracked one of the teeth. just put in some ford racing gears a week ago. so much smoother and quieter!!

no youre wrong. most motive gears are sold in ford racing boxes to make it look like ford racing gears. all motive gears are blemished. the real ford racing gears are not blemished. im sure several people have installed motive gears, thinking they were ford racing gears and have no clue.

Thanks for the reply Tigerfan. How many miles before you cracked a tooth? Normal driving? Some strip time? Both? Did a dealer install them? I don't mean to ask all these questions. If there is a problem, now's the time to take them back while in the box.

well it was a freak accident. some how my gas pedal got stuck and i went to put it in neutral and accidently put it in reverse before throwing on the e-brake. thats what messed up the gears. dont know whether they caused it or not, but they made noise right after i installed them. so it wasnt just because of that other incident. i would honestly do it right and buy the ford racing gears. and i had a certified mechanic install them both times. the same one actually. if you look on the motives, the space between each tooth is off a little from one side to the opposite. there might be a number on the gear with a .008. this is the error with the gear and since they arent even all around, tend to cause noise. the TRUE ford racing ones are perfect and will not cause any problems.
