I have the flowmasters, now what?
Hey guys i dont know a lot about exhausts. I have an 05 v6 mustang. I bought the flowmaster american thunder dual mufflers and the guy at midas said i need a kit to connect the Y-pipe(cut after cats) and mufflers. I wanted an H-pipe but he said its not going to do anything. He says flowmaster and MAC sell the kits but I cant find it anywhere. The only ones ive seen include mufflers, which i dont need. Any advice or direction on where to look would be appreciated. Thanks

go to a non-chain shop, preferably one that specializes in exhaust, and they'll hook you up with some custom work, shop around, it shouldn't be too pricey
|
yeah ... v6's dont need a crossover so i have basically no mid pipe... just goes straight from the cats back to the mufflers and it sounds pretty good ... ive got flows too i think youll be happy with the sound
|
ok, so you think it would be better to get him to custom do it like i originally believed. Midas was charging around $400 for the job. Im tryin to keep it at 300 or under. Maybe a smaller shop will have a better price, i just hope the work is as good.

go to a custom exhaust shop, they do the best work and can fabricate almost anything you want. my system cost me 722. thats b/c of the mufflers i picked out are special. |
MAC only makes off road H pipes.

Ok yea that would be helpful. Ive only seen a midpipe with mufflers though, and since i have the flowmasters already i dont need them. Is there anyway to get this kit without mufflers included? If not ill have to just go custom or switch mufflers(which i dont really want to do).
|
the mufflers are on the cat back part of your exhaust. The midpipe has the cats on them(or not if you prefer). Are you getting the two mixed up?

cats are not mufflers and mufflers are not cats |
Maybe im wrong...I thought the catalyic converters are more towards the front of the car and I would be keeping my stock ones on the car. I figured the mufflers were the flowmasters i got, that go under the bumper. What part is it that i need?

but the way your saying it in the above comments doesn't make sense. ok this is what you do. go to a custom exhaust shop and tell them i just need a dual exhaust system w/ an h pipe and show them the mufflers and bam they can do that easy. |
Ok thanks a lot. Hopefully I can keep it under $350..Looks like im going to try Meineke since most of the smaller shops by me dont seem to have pipe bending machines.
|
it might be less if you dont want them to custom make an h pipe... mine with no crossover was 250 and i already had mufflers

Yea ive wanted H the whole way. This is just getting so tiresome trying to find a place. Mufflerex said it would cost around 550-690, which is a joke. Im going to make an appointment for this place Precision exhaust & brake and the local Meineke for when Im back home from college saturday morning. If i can find a place that charges around $330 or less, ill be happy.

Yea i understand but Im not going to be able to Do it myself. Even though i wouldnt like to go back, i can get it done at Midas for around $350, so that will be my last resort. If the cost is still way up, I may just forget about the Hpipe and do what HTOWNV6 did for around $250(if i can get that)

heres a clip of what mine sounded like ... u said u got the american thunder mufflers which are the 40's that i have too .. check it out

you dont want a crappy job. like i said my system was 722 bucks its top notch. 2. dont go to Precision or to Mineke = bad job IMO if your going to do this just sell your mufflers bite the bullet and buy one of theses and have those shops do it. http://www.americanmuscle.com/magnaf...aust-2005.html |

hmm .. im not really new to the whole exhaust thing, i understand the balancing tube in the h and x pipes but just didnt know without it it wouldnt be considered true ... thanks
But just another thing to look at, do you see any dual exhaust system made by a professional company that doesnt have a H or an X |

But just another thing to look at, do you see any dual exhaust system made by a professional company that doesnt have a H or an X fake dual is when you split your Y-pipe. I think no crossover would still be considered "TRUE" dual since each cylinder head still gets its own outlet. the only reason (besides sound) the crossover is required is because of the 8 cylinder's different firing order |
yeah ive never seen actual dual exhaust for a v6 just the y pipe conversion thing ... so i dno i can understand that most exhaust companies just make their products for a v8s
|
no htownv6 your right you have true dual. True dual consists of: "A separate exhaust pipe is used to expel gases from each cylinder head." (and then each pipe has its own muffler of course) The only use of a midpipe is to equalize pressure but this is not needed on a v6 because it is an even firing system. Every exhaust system built for a V8 consists of a midpipe because otherwise the pressure will be off balance.

well who knew
