Default Car vibration from 20-40mph, could it be bad engine mounts???

Ok here's another one fellow mustang owners...

I have a 2k v6 with 101k miles. I purchased it used back in 2002 with 40k miles. Even back then I felt slight vibrations when accelerating and falling between the 20 to 40 miles per hour mark. Once I am past 40ish the vibrations are gone...even at 90mph.

Now I am feeling the vibration more than I did back then. It's usually on the steering wheel where I feel it, very little on the drivers seat...everything litterally ratles, a coke can in the cup holder will cry up a storm with the rattle (not tom mention the AC/radio area. It also has a base sound to it, a low noise that I dont know how to explain.

This still happens after getting news tires with balance and alignment so I know that tires should not be the problem.

I was told that usually happens when engine mounts are worn out, could this be the case? What other factors could cause this? What's the average cost for getting those replaced?

Thanks for reading,

ceez

if you feel it in the steering wheel it is a tire balance issue. wherever you had them balanced probably didn't do it correctly.

could be motor mounts though...look at the motor while a friend revs it up and see if it moves more than normal...it shouldn't move much at all.

a tell tail sign of motor mount failure is the gear shifter will flex more then usual when you rev the engine. depending on how messed up the mount is of course.

I'll bet a dollar your driveshaft and or U-joints are hashed. Vibrations that go away are going to be a balance issue. Just find all the crap that moves and have the balance of each checked. I'd replace the driveshaft U-joints anyway just as a troubleshooting measure.

Thats what you really should check...your driveshaft U joints...That will cause vibrations speeding up and slowing down.

i had something similar but it only when it shifted from 3rd to 4th (auto). i replaced u-joints and it didnt fix it. so i had the transmission fluid flushed and it took care of it.

has anything ever been done to your transmission fluid that you know of?

thanks for the reply guys, the vibrations only happen when accelerating. I've had the U joints replaced about 2 years ago because I was getting NASTY vibrations when going past 50 miles per hour, I could only go 50 on the highway..frustrating.

I've gotten tires a few times already during the past 5 years and I doubt it would be balancing, would every shop not balance my tires correctly? could be possible, cant trust them mechanics!

Man if my memory serves me correctly, I had the transmission oil flushed about a year ago, I have to check my service records.

I'll try to do the engine rev up test.

BTW, it's an auto and I think it's betwen 2 and 3rd gear.
