The shaker hood is a "Ram Air Inlet" that is connected to the air filter housing and mounted on top of the air intake manifold. Its debatable whether or not its a functional air intake or a Ford retro sales gimmick or both.

For mustangs, Shaker Hoods first appeared on the Mach 1s in the late 60s and early 70s. It was a ram air intake mounted directly on top of the carb. allowing air to flow directly into the carb and got its name from the way it shook as the engine was revved and shifted. You actually saw it shake as you drove.

With the advent of EFI, it was thought that a functional shaker was impracticle because all intake air was directed to filter -> MAF -> TB/Plenum -> then intake manifold, thus maintain computer control and fuel efficiency. Well, Ford figured out a way to mount the shaker hood on the engine so you could see it shake when you drove and then ran air ducts to the air filter housing to make it functional as well.

There have been a few threads about this on some of the mach1 registry forums. I think the concensus is that it is an extra air intake (nice cool air, which our engines really love) at low speeds, but at or above 65ish mph, it acts like a "poor man's" supercharger/turbo. I have not seen any numbers to actually quantify this as fact. For me personally, I bought my mach because it looked sweet sitting there in the showroom and regardles of whether it had a major effect on engine performance, it was functional.

When I installed my C&L mach CAI, my a/f went dangerously lean and I'm still working out the kinks of that. It definitely allows alot of air into the system.

There are several kits out there, some where you have to cut the hood and some that come with hoods, just depends on how much money you want to spend.

well thanks alot i could not find anything on about it in the internet only to buy it. now i understand. thanks alot. But i have another question. i it worth puting on a v6? besides it look flipin SWEET. in otherword will it really increase my HP?

Ram air is a myth. Your engine will only suck in what it can. UNless its forced to by compressed air like when you install a supercharger, turbo etc.. Thats the only time an engine will take in more air then it can on its own. Ram air is a myth. Its cool to have but all it does is give the engine colder air then whats in the engine compartment. Hp? well no one is sure but its more then likly maybe 2-3hp while at speed on the road. Its more of a cool item then a performance one.

ah dang they look so cool but for 700 to 1000 its not worth 2-3 hp a under drive pully gives u 20 and they cost like 100. Ok well thanks Spike_africa.

oh yeah but if you had a shaker and a turbo would it help in that area?

I don't know that UDP's will give you 20hp....more like 5-8rwhp, but yes the shaker looks cool, but won't do a damn thing for you.....not even sure that it does anything for the mach's.....maybe 2-3hp at 70mph like spike said.

Also, I don't think it would help much even with a supercharger or turbo because the shaker doesn't sit high enough to really get enough air to make a difference.....I raised my shaker 3/4", but it was for cosmetic purposes, not performance.

No the same thing would happen. it would get cooler air, thats it. Its a cosmetic mod and a cool one at that. for performace reasons it does very little.
