wierd suspension noise, plz help

lately my pony has been making a very odd sound whne i turn. It only make sthe noise when i turn teh wheel, even if it's only a little...it sounds like a spring straining, or some piece of metal being stressed, and in turn makign the noise...i describe the sound to a guy at the dealership(Ford), and he said that a spring may be out of it's cup...if anyone has had this ahppen to them, or knows wut im tlaking about plz post any info u have on it...thanks guys

Is it coming from the back or the front of the car?

oops, forgot to mention that...it's coming from both sides in front...

Are you running coil-overs? If so, it may very well be the spring binding. Mine did it until I got everything adjusted. If you still have stock style springs, I would tend to think a spring that was out of its perch would make noise all the time, not just when turning. Is it only low speed or high speed turns? Check you spring isolators to see if maybe they are binding.

IMO, I would jack the front of the car up, and put the jackstands on the ends of the a-arms, near the ball joints, to load the suspension as close to ride height as possible. Then have someone turn the key to "ACC" and turn the wheel lock to lock to see if you can locate the noise.

alright, i'll try that...and it's all turns, but oddly the second i get her goin straight again, she is silent....kinda wierd

If it's kind of a whining noise, you might want to check your power steering system, especially the fluid level.

I had the same noise. It's pretty interesting, right? LOL

After a year of putting up with that "metal" sounding noise, bringing it to various mechanics and even speedshops, I brought it to my autobody place owned by my friend's father. He diagnosed the problem in about 20 seconds -- it was the outer tirerods. The reason why mine wore so quickly was because I put on a pair of aftermarket rims (18 inch chromes, pretty heavy) about two years ago, and they had been wearing down the rods quicker than normal. The tirerod's cost about $10 a piece (if even that), and the installation by his mechanic at the shop took about 30 minutes or so (only because he had move the rotors/calipers out of the way.)

I'm almost *absolutely* positive this is your problem. The only place that was (not) even close to figuring out what was wrong was Gemini's Auto (I think everywhere else it might just be called Firestone), and they were going to charge me about $1500 for a brand new steering column. Don't get duped!

i checked the power steering, it's fine, the fluid level is acctualy a bit above where it should be....brat, u say it's the tie rods? i'll mention it to the guy who's workin on my car nxt week, i'll wait till after he checks it to see if he catches it though, so he doesnt automatically assume they r the problem (cause it may not be them, but from wut it sounds like, u and i have the same problem) thanks for the help thus far guys...

Could be the front wheel bearing. They will start to make noise and you will notice it. Also be a bushings that need to be greased.

It is not the suspension I think, also I don't think it is the bearing problem.... becoz you will have wired sound even though you drive straight if your bearing got problem, not juz turn.
Many Front-wheel-drive car got this problem becoz of the Front Axle got old. So how about check your steering gear, tie-rod end jam nut & also the joint of your stang. Sometimes, the rubber bar juz got old as people juz leave it..... finally the shape of the joint be a bit change by that, which some wired sound come from that.

Also, did you crash b4? OR does your stang having any 'Light bar', 'Room bar', Engine room bar...... etc? Sometime if these bar are seetting too hard will cause sound... the worst case is change your car's body shape and damage your suspension.

But you got your problem while you TURN, 90% is the steering system!! Check it out.

Anyway, you better go to check it out if you really think this is a serious problem.
It is no good to guess by us. Right?

Hope you find it out as soon as possible and not $$ to repair it.

i had the same problem to after i but some 18s on anoe oht the outer tirerrods was woren off i went to ford and they were going to charge me about 600 dollars man but i fixed for 60

my 99 mustang also has this same problem. when i turn the steering wheel this awful scartching squeeling noise comes from the front of my two tires. about a month ago i put new brake pads & roders on my car. and i told my dad about this noise. so we looked for some greese fittings, but there are none. so if it is the tie-rod. were can i buy some? how much will it be? and how much would it be to have a shop install them? and would it just be easier installing it myself? thanks in advance

It wouold be easier to install them your self. you can order new ones from your ford dealer though napa and autozone might have the part. make sure to take it to an alignment shot asap when you're finished
