How do you Convert a 3.8l to a 5.0l

I was wondering if anyone new exactl what parts i would to change my 95 v6 mustang to a 95 v8 mustang. Also I heard that the transmission are the same but the v8 is a little stronger do you know if i have to change the tranny to or just install a very strong clutch. thanks

Phantom1313 04-10-2005 10:18 AM

ehh, umm u mite wanna re-think that

dude, ur talking about changin a v6 into a v8? there's no way, that's an extra 2 cylinders, and an extra 1.2 liters of displacment...ur prolly better off just buying a new engine and swapping it out for ur v6....that would seem like the easiest way to do what you want....ask around though, other people may know more than i do regarding this....

i'm highly skilled in this matter guys....first off, you need about 5 roles of Duck Tape, and a few tubes of super glue....lol, JK, i've NEVER heard of tackin' on a couple extra cylinders, maybe it's just the way u worded the statement, but yea, i'd have to say order a racing 302 from JEGS or sumthin'......

Not modifying the engine

I was talking about swapping the v6 engine to a v8 engine.

dannyb785 04-10-2005 02:56 PM

yeah guys. I really dont think anyone on earth would attempt ADDING any amount of cylinders to their car. Now, if you bored out the engine, you could make the 3.8 into 5.0 liters. Or maybe not. I'm sure really sure how that works, but I wonder what results it would produce. oh well, but good luck w/ it. It'll be expensive for sure.

Phantom1313 04-10-2005 06:09 PM

yeha it was the way u worded it

it ws defintly not put into words correctly, now if ur tlakin about an engine swap, then that's a differnt story, im considering the same thing for some where down the line...i'd imagine u just disconnect everything , pull the engine, swap the v8, and reconnect everything....but i could be wrong

buy a complete 5.0 on ebay or something with the pcm...and all wiring. You need a new tranny, clutch, driveshaft, and rear end if you want it to hold up for NAY amount of time. look into the differences in the k-members too, I dont know if there is one..(a difference)

Sleeper Stang96 04-11-2005 09:54 AM

Ponyman covered the basics right there for you. Its not a complicated swap at all really, easier than the 4cyl to 5.0 swap thats for sure. There is an article in MM&FF I think from last year where they took a 99? v6 and swapped in a 01 cobra motor, they included a lot of the details there. I'll try and find it later today, and I'll let you know what issue it was from.

I've looked in to this for a while, trying to get my 2001 3.8 to a 4.6 or a 5.0. For a 5.0, ford racing will sell you an engine without and intake manifold for 3,100 bucks. intake manifold will cost you another 500. You then need a heavy duty clutch, I would recommened the King Cobra found on this site. In addition, you would need a new transmission that could take the stress, you could get a T5 at a salvage yard for 500-ish. Then you would need a new rear end, at the very least new rear end gears. Total, you're looking at 6,000 easy. Next best thing to do is find a used engine, with just a few miles on it, because you can get those damn cheap (about 1000-1500). The installation should just be a total swap, with the exception of a longer clutch cable (v8s have longer ones) and you will need a new computer, not just a chip, but the whole thing will have to be replaced. Buy a new car if the insurance company won't rape you, and they will.

That is going to be a lot of work. It would be cheaper just to buy a 95 GT.
You talking about swapping engine, computer, tranny rear end, brakes etc.

you need the engine, tranny, wiring harness, all the belt accessories (some motors dont come with them) a new K member, clutch and a ECU. Your stock radiator is fine and you can use your stock 7.5 rear end but i would look into getting a 8.8.
Its not that hard of a swap and can be done over the weekend with a friend or two to help you out. Its not that costly either, maybe 2k for everything. It just depends on what you pay for all the items and sometimes you can find a doner car, which just makes things that much easier.

c'mon...cram a 351W in there, haha, really scare some people....including yourself.

cobra4123 05-20-2005 09:50 AM

find a wreck gt, or cobra buy the whole car. it would be the cheapest way. wouldn't you need to change some of the front suspension to support the extra lbs?

79Fox 05-20-2005 10:38 PM

i dont think the engine will add that much more weight. i was able to find a nearly complete 302 motor for 250. they are out there and pretty cheap to buy..just gotta look around.

Smitty 05-21-2005 03:26 PM

I have a friend who did this swap. If he had to do it all over again he'd tell me to kiss his ass :) It's a lot more work than you think. Especially re-wiring the entire engine to computer etc. That's a pain. Definately not easy. Might as well just buy yourself the car with the 5.0 already in it

79Fox 05-21-2005 06:37 PM

thats why im going to stick with carbs...not pesky billion wire harnesses to worry about.
