v6 power

i want to put a supercharger on my mustang but was wondering how much boost i could go with and still be safe. all i have for mods are dual catback exhaust and a k&n CAI.

95bstallion 04-17-2006 02:13 PM

8-12 you should be alright. Any amount over that your gonna be pushing the limits a bit.

spike_africa 04-17-2006 03:37 PM

they make good power too my freinds 94 v6 which we did a split port swap (99-04 motors) with a ati procharger made 325rwhp and 305rwtq.

O.K. Warning, im getting a little bit into some tech here, and it might get long . . .

your not going to want to go much over 8 w/o and IC or 13 with

there are people out there running more, like Justin Starkley at VMP for example is running 17psi with 110 octain on his TT setup, i personally have ran 11psi out of a procharger, 8psi out of a vortech and am now in the process of running 14psi out of a turbo kit.

as far as being safe . . boost puts some stress on the engine, hell horsepower puts stress on the engine, but that might be the diffrence between going 150k miles and 120k, and i dont care about that personally :)

there are 2 major suppliers of superchargers for our cars

Please keep in mind you ARE going to have to upgrade your fuel system no matter what you do. Your going to want a focus 310l fuel pump and some injecters (depending on the unit)

We have Vortech, which is what i started off with, it is the most basic, it is an 8psi non-intercooled setup, you can find them new and used. Unfortunatly it doesnt really upgrade well. Vortech doesnt sell IC kits for it, and only a few people have custom made them to fit . . but boost is boost and they can still make good power. Enough to take down a Stock GT on your car. Also to note, the Vortech is a non-self contained unit, meaning you have to tap your oil pan to get oil to the head unit to cool it. Vortech has 2 models for us, the V1 and the V2(sq) basically one is quiet and one isnt.

Then there is Procharger, my personal favorate, known to make the most power and has given me the personal pleasure of embarasing my share of v8's stock and moded alike. Get some nice free flowing exhaust a tune and call it a day. The procharger comes in some diffrent boost levels, i believe 7, 9, and 11. Go with the 11 and dont look back You'll make damn good power and with a proper tune you should have nothing to worry about. Exept for maybe your tranny and rearend if you beat on it a lot. The procharger unit is self-contained unlike the vortech unit. It has its own special oil that you buy from procharger.

Of course your other option would be a Turbocharger, There is a very nice guy named Andy that custom makes them, they are good solid kits but they tend to be a bit more involved when installing.

There is one thing i cannot stress enough and that is a tune, do not settle for a mail order tune. Get a dyno tune and please get one from somebody that knows what they are doing, perferably someone that knows v6's well. Believe me, you will be safer, and make more power.

I know it got a bit lengthly but i hope this helps. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Yeah for more good tech.

95bstallion 04-17-2006 04:15 PM

Their are always other ways of cooling the vortech system though. They have water/methanol injections which can do around the same amount of cooling. Also i have a quick question for you teal beast. I'm putting a vortech v2 on right now. The fmu is supposed to supply me with enough fuel or w/e. I know their not soo reliable, but this upcoming winter im doing a ton of mods and I only dirve it 800 miles a year just to car shows and back. Will a be alright for those 800 if i do not hit rpm;s over say like 4,000.

95bstallion 04-17-2006 04:18 PM

sorry for goin off topic a bit. My question should help clear up other question people might ask.

spike_africa 04-17-2006 04:21 PM

You can use the FMU with stock injectors as thats how they set it up. Its not very good at all but its normaly pig rich safe. your best bet is to get 30# injectors and tune it with a maf. What mods does your car have anyhow 95 stallion.

Rusty (teal beast) ran a vortec like i said above for awhile on the stock 94 motor before it blew the infamous head gaskets that suck on that motor.

I have tons of exterior mods but for the engine. I have 8.5mm ignition wires. 3.73 gears and mac catback. I have a diablo racing chip will this effect my supercharger at all?
My next thing im buying with might go on with the supercharger is a heavily ported upper intake i have lined up. Then upgrading injectors and fuel pump this winter. Gettering mac lt's with catted h and running anderson motorsports mr.freeze.

yea, the desired setup is to fork the extra money over for inj. chip and a fuelpump, but if you need to bide your time, then the FMU will suffice, it will be on the rich side, like spike said. So its not that it will be dangerous per say, but it wont make as much power as it could. Goodluck with your setup, if you have any questions post up.

oh, and get some picks up!

So your on the stock long block? you should do the split port swap after you do the vortec or you a hardcore single port guy?

95bstallion 04-17-2006 05:14 PM

well i want a ported upper to help get rid of some of the hot air that builds up for now, but ive thought about going split port, but im not sure how hard it would be. I really just want to make a 300 hp v6. I'll have pics of everything soon enough. It's a polished v2 also:punk:. Ive been sanding my car down this weeks so shes ready for prismatique black:clap:

spike_africa 04-17-2006 05:15 PM

i can tell you from experience its gonna take some work with the single port motor just ask teal beast. Its really not hard at all to swap the heads and intake out for the 99-04 setup the hardest part is moding the fuel rail which i personaly foudn a cheap and easy way to do.

95bstallion 04-17-2006 05:17 PM

its not that actual installation that bothers me its how do i do a tune from split to singleport? Could i get my chip reburnt? Is my chip gonna effect my fmu in anyway?

dyno tune is all you need as far as the swap goes

if you want to stay single port you have to open up that topend . . .

and that means $$$

95bstallion 04-17-2006 05:37 PM

Alright ill really have to think about it. At this time the vortech alone makes me very very happy.:)
