Tire Opinions

I finally found out the size of my rims, they're 17x9.5 all around.
What should I get for tires and what size?
I'll probably go with 40 for the profile. I've decided to have an open mind on other tires. Price is no a matter, but cheap, medium and expensive would be nice, just a pick. It's a Daily Driver, I race and it's like 9 months out of the year is rain, guessing. LOL

What about Stock rims?
I do know they're stock, but not sure what size or anything about them. They're located some where else right now.

Ps. I found out the size by a rim gage thing, I don't know how to explain it, but my mechanics had one laying around at the shop.

Currently I have Toyo Proxes 4 "245/45ZR17 99W"

Okay, first it needs to be dropped.

Second the widest tire for a 9-9.5" wheel would be a 275 safe but you could fit a 295 on there I'm pretty sure. Maybe even a 315 on a 9.5" but it'd be bubbling over the edge.

zigzagg321 02-25-2010 08:54 AM

you have 9.5inch wide rims in the front??

BikerSk8rKid 02-25-2010 09:21 AM

08mustang_gt - I would lower it, but then I'd hit almost every where I go. :/

zigzagg321 - Yeah, that's how I got the rims and the paperwork that I got from the guy who sold me the car says 9's in front and 10.5's in back.

Edit: I'll go with 275-40-17, after I decide on what kind of tires I want.

so are they 9.5 all around, or 9 in front and 10.5 in the back?

I used my mechanics rim width gage thing and they said 9.5 and I checked EVERY rim.
I used something like this, but way bigger.

you measured from the lip edge to lip edge. They are actually 17x9 rims.

Yes, lip edge to lip edge.

I know with the 245's I have on now they rub on the left side, but not the right side because it's missing the Fender Well thing.

I'm thinking to go with
275-45-17 in the rear
and
245-40-17 in the front

But that means I can't rotate them.

I doubt that. With the write drop you could easily still drive it fine. But, I understand where you're coming from. No risk is better than some risk.

I come pretty close from hitting my drive way and I do hit on my girls drive way, just not nearing as bad, my brothers drive way and a bunch of other places I go.

I'm guessing it's because of the exhaust mid section isn't held up where it should be. I think it's supposed to be put up, sitting up in the Cross Member?

something is weird here dude. look for the rim size stamped into the rim itself. 17x9.5 doesnt seem right. Im having trouble finding a 17x9.5 "95 Cobra R" style wheel. They are all 17x9.

I tried, but I can't find it. Probably because I had the rims re-done. Either way if they're 9's or 9.5 it wont make a difference. Just looking for a tire size suggestion and tires.

I'm not saying you're wrong and I don't believe you, I'm just going by what the gage thing said.

Edit: I found some while doing a google search. They might not be '95 Cobra R's, might be a different year or something. Hell they might not even be Cobra R's. I bought the Center Caps and put them in there my self.

Ps. They came in Chrome, not black.

zigzagg321 02-25-2010 04:22 PM

Ok...well...I wouldnt put a 245 size tire on a 9 inch rim...even worse a 9.5inch rim. You have "95 Cobra R" style rims, if the picture you posted is your car and such. Shop for tires based on a 17x9 rim. Unless your rims are some one-off forging or casting..they are 17x9.

Try to find a 17x9.5 '95 cobra R style rim.

Is 245 to small for a 9inch or something?
What would you suggest for tire size then?
Tomarrow I can take a picture of the rim gage with it measuring my rim and show you.

I dont care what your rim gauge says.

Look on the inside of the rim...get a flashlight...the size will be marked on the rim somewhere. Until you do this, you dont even know what you are working with.

a 9inch rim can support up to a 275/40/17 size tire. I think a 245 on a 9 is too skinny. A 245 works perfectly on an 8 inch rim. 255/45/17 is the smallest Id go on a 9. 265/ would work great...but thats not a common width among 17inch tires.

spike_africa 02-28-2010 08:12 AM

Those are 17x9's for sure. Look how the tire is pulled in a bit. If it was a 17x8 it would be flush with the side of the wheel and its not. Those are 17x9's for sure.

Me I would go 245 or 255 up front, and 275/40/17 out back. You could run a 285/40/17 out back if you wanted to. But the choices in that size are very slim and they cost more then 275's.

r3dn3ck 02-28-2010 08:26 AM

I'll second spikes advice. I like a 275 on a 9.5" rim.

BikerSk8rKid 03-01-2010 11:18 PM

What would happened if I tried 275 up front? Would it rub? I like that step up, but that means I can't rotate my tires. Not that it would matter that much, but yea.
It doesn't rub now, just makes some noise when you turn it all the way. I thought it was always rubbing, haha.

zigzagg321 03-02-2010 12:00 AM

a 275 up front on a new edge(99-04) can rub...mine did at full lock. You have less room in your pre-1999 stang. Id go no wider than 255 up front.

WNRacing 03-02-2010 08:21 AM

255's on the front. 275's on the back. Done.

I just don't understand why people have so much trouble with tires & sizes.. It's all pretty simple really. :dunno:

agreed. but if a person has never been exposed to the world of tires, I can see how they could know zero about them.

Honestly, it's still pretty simple.. I guess I can understand for people who know absolutely ZERO about tires, but for someone who has been around forums & cars for a while it should really be quite simple to comprehend.

true. Hell, Ive known what the numbers on the sidewall meant since I was probably 12 or so. I read about it in a book. (haha pre-interwebz)

stanger00 03-02-2010 10:48 AM

17X9.5" 95 Cobra R's. I LOL'd at that.

275/45...thats gonna be a big tire and throw your speedo off. Stick with what these people suggest 255/40 up front and 275/40 out back.
