largest tire for stock rims?
 

ok im sure this has been asked before but i looked and couldnt find it, so i have stock 17x8 rims for now and my tires are wearing out especially the rears, so question is can i put a 255, 265 or 275 size tire on my rims?? the AM guy said dont go over 255's but i have heard of people running 275's just having them balloon out a little bit, so i was thinking maybe a 265 would be safe to purchase?? eventually i do plan to purchas some 17x9 rims like 6 months down the road so i wana be able to keep the same tires and swap them over to the new rims that is why im not gona get a 245 and dont wana get a 255 either really.

there are some guys here running 275's on 8's. I've wondered on this as well, BUT wait for their input.

275's for stock rim.

My car came with NT555's on the rear and are 275; I have the stock 5-star Pony 17x8 wheels. They do "balloon" out a bit, which I don't like for both aesthetics and performance. I don't have any proof, but I would believe running an overly-wide tire for a given wheel can not be beneficial at all. Alas, the tires have worn evenly and have, to my knowledge, always been pressurized at 30 PSI.

275/40/17 fits 7.5" to 9.5" wide rims.

Yes, they do bulge a bit but you do get some extra traction. 245/45 tires just suck ass.

Stanger, how do you figure that width fits a given width wheel?

I just honestly don't feel comfortable with a 275 on an 8" wheel.. I know it's been done. Hell, I think we've all seen 315's on a 9" wheel, that doesn't mean it's a good idea..

Largest I would recommend is a 255. JMHO

I ran a 275/40 Nitto drag radial on my 5 spokes before. They bulged out a bit. I didnt like the look of it and they didnt benefit me at the track. I think I had them for about a year before I got the FR500 rims. Given this statement and if I still had 17X8's I wouldnt run a 275/40. Save up 900-1100 bucks and buy new 17" rim and tires. Sell your stock stuff for 200-400 like I did.

I have a 275/40 on a 9" wide rim and they bulge but the tires are BF Goodrich and those fucks make their tires big.

I have a 235/40/18 on a 18/8.5 rim. You think it would be hella stretched but its not the tires fit nice and flush. I have no rim protection but I'm overly cautious when I parallel park anyway. I run that tire/rim combo on the Mazda.

haha yeah i wish i could just save up 900-1100 bucks but bein 19 years old workin only 25 hrs a week and goin to school full time payin for school, car note, insurance, and an apartment it will never happen lol ive gota get tires asap b/c mine are bald and i wont be able to get wheels till summer realisticlly when i can work more shifts

i would only run a 255 or 265 at the most on an 8 " rim....

Well looks like dustins got the final say so in this thread lol he says 275 is safe, but yeah im looking online right now i was really planning to get 265's just to be extra safe and i know they will still look good on my 9" rims when i purchase these down the road but i can't seem to find very many tires that are 265/40/17 american muscle does not have any at all and tire rack only has about 4 tires to choose from, so i may just go 275 b/c there are so many more choices??

A 275 on an 8 will/should work, but are not recommended, nor do they look right at all. Yeah Spike has them...tons of people do, that doesnt make it right to do, because technically it isn't.

a 275 tire bulges on a 9inch rim...maximum amount that I'd feel comfortable with. That what I used to have.

EDIT: just did some research and I cannot find a tire/rim size calculator that says its ok to put a 275 tire on any rim smaller than a 9inch width rim.

A 275 tire safely fits on rims from 9-11 inches wide.

I was just going to ask because I didn't want to make a new thread but would yall suggest that I put 18x9's FR 500 on the front and 18x10's FR 500's on the rear and what size tire would be good for these rims because I want a fat rim but not somethin that is going to look stupid. Thanks

I run 275 tires on my stock set of rims. Due to the bulge and therefore bent sidewall, they are not best for performance driving such at open track or autocross. I run 265 on my 9" FR500 rim and 295 on my 10" rim. 275 would be perfect for a 9" rim, with some variance due to manufacturing, becuase the sidewall is straight as it was designed to be and provides full stiffness and best performance. I would get 275 for my stock rims again, becuase it looks best if you like some buldge.

this kind of buldge doesnt look right. And technically it isn't safe...even though many ppl do it and have done it with zero problems.

I dont want to risk a rolled bead ever... tires are important...if you want fat tires, get the rims that are sized properly for the fat tires.

I have Nitto 555 275/40's on my stock bullitt wheels. I've been running them for over a year like this. I don't think they look bad at all. In fact I kinda dig the way they bulge out a bit.... however... I wouldn't recommend it. My fronts have began leaking around 10 lbs a week or so since the weather got cold. I assume that's why anyway. I'm sure it's not sealing properly on the bead. I'm getting ready to upgrade to some 9"ers in the front and some dd rears. Trust me I'm a guy who likes to push the limit on tire sizes but I don't think it's a good idea on these wheels. Just my .02 though..
