Chrome Rim Cleaner?

I just bought the '03 SVT Cobra rims for my 01 Mustang. I have already made my decision to keep the rims on through the winter, but just be careful and try to not drive when theres salt out on the roads. But what is the best product to clean them with to prevent the corrosion and keep them in good shape throughout the winter? Any advice would be helpful.

You may wanna swap your rims/tires on there during the winter time?

I would be interested in a cleaner/sealer to help with dirt and grime for chrome if I could ever find one. I am kinda in the same boat since mine will be on throughout the winter too, but my winters prob much tamer than yours if your up north or in michigan

I use the Meguiar's "Hot Wheels" cleaner or whatever the hell it is called that comes in a purple bottle. I know Meguiar's makes some specifically to clean chrome wheels, so you could look into that.

Another tip I have for you is to wax your wheels after you clean and dry them. Yes, I said 'wax'. Wax them like you would your car. Not only does it make them shinier, but it adds a little extra bit of protection against break dust. I've noticed that when I wax my black bullitt's, and wash them a few weeks later, that they are easier to clean and the dust doesn't really need to be scrubbed to come off.

good idea

I live in Springfield, IL. It only snows a few times a year up here. I guess i'll go look for that product in the purple bottle you were talking about, and my car is due for a wax this week anyway(home for thanksgiving break from college) so i'll go ahead and wax the rims too as long as it wont mess with the finish.

Make sure you read the bottle to find out if the wheel cleaner is compatible with chrome.

If you're worried about the wax messing up the finish, just test it on an inconspicuous area first. You should not have any problems, unless you have some kind of mutant, acidic wax unknown to man. :p

Haha okay i'll go ahead and give it a wax tomorrow in my spare time =P

Do you use it?

if anything wax will help the chrome rim by protecting it from various debree as it does for paint on the car, and make them shine a bit longer too.

Honestly, as a detailer there is little to nothing you can do besides clean them A LOT in the winter. Pretty much all chrome cleaners are the same. You can use spray detailer on them to keep the dirt off a little longer than usual tho.

correct me if im wrong, but its only the salt that will hurt them, not the snow right?

spike_africa 11-30-2009 06:35 PM

Snow is no big deal, however if they salt your roads there is gonna be salt in it.

krazypony 12-01-2009 09:01 AM

yeah glad we dont have Salt issues like they do up north, esp. in PA where I grew up!

But instead of salt here they throw Sand ( NO JOKE ) they just arent prepared for it here and the cost of it is prob cheaper too
