To Stagger Or Not To Stagger

Would it be better to go with 265/35/18 all around, or should i mix it up with 265/35/18 up front and 285/35/18 in the back ????? I have a 98 GT Convertible and would be using the 95 Cobra R Rims. Any input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS !!!!!!

To stagger!

SxyXc 02-09-2009 05:23 PM

stagger looks better, go stagger

krenogin 02-09-2009 05:24 PM

Of course,, only do it if u have wider wheels in the back, i think it'd be weird to go off in size if u got same width between all wheels.

+1. Don't stagger the tires, just the wheels. It'd look like RICE with the tires....seen it before

SeanStang 02-09-2009 05:57 PM

Yeah only stagger if they are different rim sizes. You gotta decide if you wanna be able to rotate or not.

mustangrn 02-09-2009 07:20 PM

STAGGER!!!!

lazyhomie1908 02-09-2009 07:24 PM

do it only on diff size rims. if not not really worth it.

mpt_1962 02-09-2009 10:22 PM

dont do it unless you NEED the extra traction in the back. Its better to be able to rotate the tires

Black Sunshine 02-10-2009 05:50 AM

Stagger, dammit, stagger!

Havokk 02-10-2009 05:55 AM

Stagger the shit out of it.

Dodobird223 02-10-2009 07:47 AM

195's in the front, 365's in the back!

King 02-10-2009 07:51 AM

Stagger

E-Rod 02-10-2009 11:35 AM

Ok the rim size will be 18x9 all around (have not seen an 18x10 in the 95 Cobra R) and I do not drive alot so rotating would not be that big of an issue, would it really be to rice-brunerish if I STAGGER ????

King 02-10-2009 11:41 AM

Are you sure it's a 95 Cobra R wheel you're looking at? Because I personally have never seen a 18'' 95 Cobra R rim before. I know AM has 17x9 and 17x10.5 95 R rims...not sure about 18s though.

And I say don't stagger unless you've got a wider rim.

E-Rod 02-10-2009 12:24 PM

Yes they sell it at AM for the 2005 and up with a 45 offset so it might rub a bit, but there is a Discount Tire Company here that has an 18x9 rim with a 24 offset that shouldnt rub at all.

Stephen4036 02-10-2009 12:30 PM

ahahah 14-0 to stagger.

This is an old thread, but just what I've been looking for!

I'm also a member over at RX8club.com, as I initially wanted to buy an RX8 before I settled on the Stang. I couldn't be happier, but the folks over on those forums are quite nice and know what they're talking about, and the 8 still gets me all worked up it's so sexy. But anyways...

I read a topic over there on why one should not stagger their tires. Since the RX8 is very neutrally balanced from the factory, you basically throw off the balance by putting wider tires in the back. I'm wondering how this relates to us Mustang owners. I know for a damn fact our cars are no where near as sound in the suspension area as the 8 is, but I'm still curious.

http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=50607

I've read almost all of that topic, and I've come to the conclusion that our cars would benefit more from that additional traction rather than the neutral handling, if that exists for us.

What do you folks think? Just something that I was pondering now that I'm going to need new tires comes spring time when I get my car back out of storage. I think I'm going to stick with the stock wheels for now and go with 245/45 up front and 275/40 in the back. But back on topic... thoughts?

spike_africa 11-05-2009 05:41 AM

Well those cars are setup very differently then ours. We have a heavier Iron block v8 up front with small tires out back. These cars when pushed hard like to have the back end come out. That's why wider (to an extent) back tires will help make the car handle a bit more neutral and not oversteer.

Just my thoughts on it. I also rock 245/275 on stock wheels and it works well for me. Car handles very nicely with my mods.

cr4sh_0v3rl0ad 11-05-2009 06:15 AM

I'm with Dustin, i run 245/275 on stock wheels as well, and my car handles pretty well.

Switch 11-05-2009 08:43 AM

I only stagger when I'm REALLY drunk.

krazypony 11-05-2009 09:11 AM

I love the staggered wheel appearance....

I am running 255/315's on my car now!

Kyanbi 11-05-2009 12:49 PM

A little off topic but the stock 5-star Pony wheels are BOTH 17x9 right?

spike_africa 11-05-2009 12:54 PM

Only the Cobra models have 17x9 wheels. The rest are 17x8.

Kyanbi 11-05-2009 01:03 PM

Ah ok. I measured them from inside to inside, which I know is not the correct measurement but they looked like nine's. Thanks :)

krazypony 11-05-2009 01:45 PM

yeah my fronts are 17x9 and thats why I went with a little wider tire this time around, and bumped it up to a 255 from a 245

Mr. Zip 11-05-2009 09:51 PM

Dooo itttt, it's fun. :)

+1. That rocks!

rkaz 11-06-2009 01:43 PM

If u drive the car much, and want 2 rotate the tires then it's a bad idea. Yes it looks bad ass, but 2 me I would rather b able to rotate my tires. The only other thing is what I did do is use a set of wheel spacers on the back. I used a 1&1/2" spacer on a set of sve 17x9's and like the look of that.

zigzagg321 11-06-2009 01:45 PM

305/30/18 in the back...keep the 265s up front.
