Fulda Quantum Elite??

During a front brake change yesterday, I got a huge shock when my soon-to-be brother in law was taking off my passenger side front tire. There was a 1/2 x 12 inch strip of rubber missing from the inside circumference of the tire!

Since I had such great luck with Sumitomo Tires, I called my local Big O Tires (would have gone through A M, but it was kind of an emergency) for two more.

Well, I went to Big O after work today, and they didn't order the Sumos, instead, they had Fulda Quantum Elite tires. I've never heard of them. The stats are as:

Temperature: A Traction: AA Treadwear: 420 (WOW!)

The 265/35 R18s list at Big O for $259 each, But they sold them to me for the same price as the Sumos ( $165/each).

Just wonding if anyone ever heard of Fuldas as a brand...

I've heard of them...cheapo tires man...but so are Sumitomo's.

I had a friend that always bought the fuldas from dobbs. They seemed to be okay never had any problems. He drove a escort though!

So your basing the quality of my tires on what you "heard"? Guess that and $2.00 will get me a cup of coffee...... If you haven't owned them, how can you comment on them intelligently?

Beg to differ, my Sumo's kicked the crap out of ALL the BFGs I used before. Handled better wet or dry, quieter too. I would have got another 6 to 8 months out of the front tires alone if not for me hitting something, damagaing the tire, making them well over 2 years old.

As for the Fulda's:

Just got back from my chiropractor, he drives a tricked out M5, his mechanic, who was there also, says that the Fulda Quantums are a great tire, said its a German made tire, harder compound than most of the Japanese tires. Said I might slip a little more in HARD cornering, but I'll get twice the tire life over the Sumos.

riight...so anyway...I can comment on them intelligently...I dont own a set, but I have installed them(they were harder to balance than a lot of other tires I have installed) ...driven cars with them on...serviced the same car for a year that had them...they didnt last the entire year. They got loud at about half tread.

so...the Sumi's...I have been using them for about 2 years now...been through 2 sets...they dont hook for shit...they start off with less tread than more expensive tires...they lasted about 10,000 daily driven miles. To me, that makes them shitty...BUT they are super cheap and look good, so I buy them. 315's are expensive. (except Sumi's)

and yer dude with a "tricked out" M5..lol. Someone who can afford such a beast...why would they buy Fuldas? doesnt make sense. A car like that deserves Michelin Pilot PS3's...not Fulda poo poo.

Can only go by what I saw: Tire jockey at Big O had the Sumos off, and the Elites mounted and balanced in less than 25 minutes (I watched him, didn't want him clipping a balance weight on the outside of my rim

). Had the car up to 90+ today without a single vibration. Less road noise than the Sumos

Before this incident I'd been on the same Sumos since Jan 06, and I had put over 25,000 miles on them. The 285s are still in great shape, the manager at Big O says I still have over 45% tread on both. I drive over 20 miles each way to work each day, half highway, half surface roads, and CA roads SUXOR!.

Actually he's running 20" & 21" (25 sidewall)Toyos right now, he had the PS3's, but saved himself over $700 by trying the Toyos, at his mechanic's recommendation.

He says the Toyos are a little softer, and louder under hard cornering, but grip OK.

NOTE: His mechanic has a shop right on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach. Saw a Shelby GT500 in the bay the last time I was there getting $40K worth of upgrades done to it.

Guess we'll agree to disagree on the Sumos, and the jury will still be out on the Elites.....

I noticed you said you had 285's...are they 18 inch...if so you might be running the HTRZII, instead of the HTR-Z I use bec I have 17's.

must have been a nice balancer.

I have had great luck with Sumis and will probably get three years out of this set, though I don't drive much. You should get 12 - 15k at least out of them unless you drive like an assclown.

I know nothing of the Fulda's....never heard of them. But a 420 treadwear rating has no business on a performance car. Those things are rolling cement.

I just picked up a set of Fuzion tires for my gt. They have a treadwear rating of 400. So far the tires are much better than the crappy gatorbacks. Obviously if I cared about hooking I wouldn't have purchased these. Luckily these rims will only be on for the winter. If I never cared about hooking I would keep these tires on all year. They are cheap and good enough for a daily driven car...sports car or not...not everyone cares about performance.

You guys can keep spending money on tires that only get 15000 miles. I'll stick with the fuzions until I put my other wheels on after winter.

I'm sure the fuldas will be okay for you man.

My thoughts exactly...

I drive over 300+ miles a week between work and living (errands, gym, etc.. ) I need a tire that will last. Have no interest in replacing tires every year.

My Sumos have been on the car this long because I don't tear them up. I drive fast (who doesn't in CA), but I don't have to drive the tires at the edge of their perfomance envelope at every opportunity that presents itself. If someone's wiping out a tire well before its average life span, I'd be more inclined to look at the owner's driving style over the tires they are using.

BTW: If the Elites on the front keep performing as well as they have so far, I'll be putting a set on the back when I finally need to replace the 285s.
