How Wide Can I Go w/Stock Rims

I have 18x8.5" stock rims on my 2007 GT. I have read that the widest tire for that rim is a 255. Other places I have read that I can go as wide as 275 (for example, Edmunds.com just had a couple of articles on their "Project Mustang" where they did this).

Do... Anybody have any opinions on this?

Thanks

you can fit 275 but they look a little funny in my opinion

I think 255 is the biggest you could go.. 275 would prob be too big, or get too much of a bulge.. I might be wrog though.

That's why its so confusing. If I click on the "sticky" post Tire Sizes, I read the following:

FOR 94-04-

On a 18x9 rim the BEST SIZE to use is a: 275/35/18

2005+

On a 18x9 the BEST SIZE to use is a 255/45/18

I cannot figure out why it should make a difference - both of these are referencing the same size wheel, yet pre-05 its a 275, and 05-on its a 255.
