Gauge Cluster Overlays?
Im looking at sprucing up my gauge a bit, i like the white overlay ones, but i saw some pretty awesome ones a bit back that would allow you to customize your own gauges. They also sold LED lights that fit the gauges so you could change your color as well. Just wondering if you guys know of any good ones, if so where to get em. Thanks :)
Edit: After searching a bit i found the one i was looking for but if you want im still open for suggestions. Also anyone wanna post pics of their gauge cluster? Im deciding between stainless steel or carbon fiber bezel trim. |
OVERLAYS SUCK ASS. ANYONE THAT USES AN OVERLAY SHOULD BURN IN HECK
|
Why do you think so? I think some done properly look very nice. Plus im kinda in the mood for some change.

Here's some old shitty pictures of the Mac overlay before I changed out the cluster. I've seen some pretty tacky looking overlays but this one had a simple clean look.

Overlays suck giant donkey ballz because you have to pull the needles to put them on. Re-indexing the needles is a bitch of the highest order. If you hit a big bump you're liable to have the overlay slump down and now your gauges are useless and inaccurate. They add thickness to the gauge face which can (and has for me) interfere with the smooth operation of the needles.
There's just no upside to them as far as I care that justifies the fact that they're a redneck solution to a simple style problem. MRT has a great unit (same as the autometer cluster) for a reasonable price and it's FUCKING STUPID EASY to install. You can't fuck it up without trying really hard. It won't fuck up thanks to a big bump, and you won't have to dick with it more than the 1 time to install it. http://www.mrt-direct.com/85b000.html |
I have always liked the look of the simco gauge cluster and I am really thinking about getting one. Too bad AM doesn't sell them anymore. Those overlays did look pretty nice, but I agree with all of the cons of overlays.

The advantage to overlays is the cost obviously. I never had a problem with the overlays. It never fell out of place and I never had a problem with needle operation. I do agree that it can cause problems though, I just personally never experienced any.
I went with the Autometer Lunar cluster, same thing as the Simco or MRT cluster really, just slight differences. I have the Lunar series nitrous pressure and a/f guages in the pillar too, it all matches perfectly. Only downside is they are hard to come by and are pretty pricey now. The gauge cluster looks pretty sleek, how much did you pay for it? One of my buddies said that it didn't take him but an hour to install his, he was being careful and took his time.

I was able to pick mine up on ebay over a year ago brand new in the box. It was someone selling out their inventory after they stopped making them, there were some good deals out there.
|
Yeah, eBay is the go to place to find good deals it seems like.
|
I love the color of the Glow, but I hate the whiteness.
|
i love the simco gauges there so good looking and sleek. check em out. http://www.simcoltd.com/aftermarket-...ang/1999-2004/

I have simco from MRT.

I have had my eyes on that cluster for a while. It sure does look clean with not too much going on. The price does make me not want to buy these though, just doesn't seem worth it, but I don't know.

+1 on the simco vs overlays. I picked up my simco mainly due to the great deal I got. Jegs was getting rid of them for $170! Plus they match the auto meter ultra lite series pretty well...the only difference is the auto meters have orange needles.

The more I see the Simco gauges the more I want to buy them. I just can't justify spending over $200 on them when I could really use that money to help pay for a new exhaust right now.
I might just try the overlay from AM for now. If I take my time with installing it and keep the car under 100 when I go over railroads tracks I think I should be fine. |
you know what they say... you live you learn. Why do it the redneck way when you can do it right.
it's your car and your money though. Do what makes you happy. I'd really recommend staying clear of the overlays and just pony-ing up the dough for the simco. See if you can find a used one... they're worth it for perfect install. |
I have overlays. They are not hard to install and mine have 7 different colors they can glow. I wired them up to work like stock and even dim with the dimmer looks factory and cost me $80 from AM.com years ago.

hey r3d, just to let you know not everyone has the money to spend on getting what they "want". sometimes we have to settle for what we can get. overlays aren't as bad as you make them out to be. i am sure some suck ass but some don't
i would rather have some actual gauges rather than overlays but don't have the money edit-seanstang your lunar gauges are really nice. love the way they glow at night |

Well the way i view it, i like the overlays because i could customize mine, and i wanted different from stock for a cheaper price. But i figure if worst comes to worse, ill just buy a new cluster if i fuck it up, yea itll suck but i tried. I havent tried yet. lol
