Will a Cobra R bumper fit my Mustang?

I have a v6 Mustang and I'm planning on purchasing a Cobra R bumper and I was wondering if it would fit properly.

I read on a different forum that the 03-04 Cobra bumper requires that you have to get the Cobra hood or else there will be a gap between the two, and something about needing a grille delete because the bumper wont fit?

Will there be any mounting problems or alignment problems?

Also, with this bumper will I need to get some aftermarket rocker panels?

Thanks.

yeah, there is a little extra gap between the hood and the bumper. Nothing serious though

A measurement? Anyways, that's not a big deal, will I need to replace my grille? I don't have the delete kit or anything but I'd rather not blow money on that just yet. If I have to, I'll just take it out and have a black hole. :P

Will it look ridiculous to have this bumper on my car without side skirts?

It should looks something like this but the side skirts on the mustang in the picture are after market.

only matters with 03/04 bumpers IIRC. If you get a 99-01 cobra cover then it should be ok. Not 100% sure but pretty sure.

I had a Cobra R bumper on my v6. You shouldn't have a gap. The gap comes from people having a 03/04 Cobra hood, they are a bit shorter and the 03/04 Cobra bumper makes up for the space. You don't have to change your grille, although I recommend going with a Mach1 grille delete for a cleaner look. The bumper is low, it will be the lowest part of the car. That being said, the best looking option would be to get some 03/04 Cobra side skirts to help balance the car. At one time I had a '00R bumper and hood, and stock sides kirts and wing, looked like the front of the car weighed 5 tons. It is best to plan on bracing the bottom part of the bumper from the inside because they like to fold under at 65+mph.

but the 00R looked all v6 besides the front bumper and hood. it had v6 skirts, vents, and back bumper. the side exhaust was just hanging there too.

I think it would look okay, but some people may thing otherwise.. Like i like a stage 3 roush front with stock side skirts and rear.

It's all up to you, but 99 - 01 cobra will work. If you get aftermarket expect a possiblity of a rough fit.

That bumper rarely flows with our cars IMO. On purpose built track cars they flow with the look and could potentially serve a purpose, but as a basically stock DD it'll look really out of place. Especially with all stock body and just that front bumper it's so front heavy and usually looks ridiculous.

Awesome! The guy's dicking me around a little but if I get it, it will supposedly be in "bubble wrap" never opened and unpainted for $170. Had to jew him around a little.

How would I brace it?

Also, what about hardware? Would I need any other parts if the guy doesn't have them to install the bumper? Like screws etc...

Good price dude. You won't need any new hardware. Not sure on the brace, but I'd imagine you'd have make something up. Might be a walk through somewhere about it...

Just talked to him and hopefully I'll be picking it up tomorrow. It doesn't come with any hardware. I asked him about the brace, and he said "I did 185+ in my Cobra and it held up fine"... I'm sure there's something around here or on the interwebs. I'll get pictures of it tomorrow.

He may have did 185+ but was he looking at the front bumper while he was doing it? Anyways, just a small round bar or flat stock going from the bottom-back lip of the bumper to the radiator support would be enough.

Stock as in wood? lol

I picked it up for $170 and like he promised, it's still in bubble wrap and had plastic over that. I have to wait for my buddy who works at a body shop to give me a price to paint it.

I was wondering, I would like to put some cobra fog lights on the bumper, but I looked and there's just the holes, there's not like anything you can mount them on. Oh, and it's fiberglass.

Brontobyte 03-28-2010 09:38 PM

Would I need to buy this + a right hand one in order to have fog lights?

krenogin 03-28-2010 10:01 PM

How did he get it to 185+ in bubble wrap?

And fiberglass is scary.

Two different bumpers, the one he had on his 99 svt cobra and the one I have. Why is fiberglass scary? I saw pictures of his bumper when he hit a curb and it took a chunk out of the lip. :P

EDIT: I talked to a buddy of mine who works at a junk yard, he mentioned to me like a year ago that he had 2 silver Steeda side skirts off of a Roush clone 99-04 body style. I've google'd my ass off and I can't seem to find any Steeda side skirts, I hope he's wrong and they're really Roush ones to go along with the persons clone. Never the less, they're still A/M side skirts and he'd sell 'em for $100. Already silver so I won't need to get them painted. :) If someone can post a pic of them, that'd be great.

SeanStang 03-28-2010 10:53 PM

Steeda used the stock side skirts for their new edge mustangs. They had a side stripe with their logo, but that was it. So maybe the skirts he was talking about were actually Roush.

I hope so. I'll check them out soon. And your image link is broken.

krazypony 03-29-2010 09:22 AM

I have always loved the QS/1 hood from Steeda, now there front lower clip was not something I would consider...those dang sides are nothing more than the stock rocker panels with there over priced expensive decal running on the side.

Brontobyte 03-29-2010 12:01 PM

I went to one of the auto body shops to try and fish around for a price to paint the bumper, just in case my buddys' price wasn't good enough. (Still hasn't given me one yet)

The body shop said $150 to paint it. I'd also need him to install it, but I'm sure he'll do that for free.
