Question about mach chin spoiler
 

Thinking about the mach 1 chin spoiler for my redfire 04 gt.
i was thinking about painting it to match because i think it would look much better.

are these the smooth plastic type material or are they textured? just wondering if they would be easy to have painted?

also from MT they come coiled up. is it a pain getting it to fit after it's been un coiled? would it be worth $25 to have it shipped not coiled up?

They are slightly rough. Can look great painted. Don't spend the extra money on freight. They uncoil fine.

great! i'm not sure if i want the chin or not...now that i've been reading you have to drill holes to install it. i don't really want to do that to my bumper!

what about the grill delete? those can be painted as well right?

The holes that you have to drill, will never be seen by anyone unless they crawl under the car.

The GD could be painted too.

GET IT. They look great, and I have seen them unpainted on redfire cars, and it looks great. I wouldnt paint it, I think the flat black gives it good contrast and actually looks better without. Just an opinion so take it as that. And about the holes, as said, no one is going to see them anyway.

:icon_bigs --- check out pictures of my whip in my signature, Laser Red GT with painted chin spoiler and grill delete. installation took me a good half hour, no visible marks what so ever, painted for free cause i have a family shop but shouldnt be much to paint it anywhere - adds SOOOO much to the car you have no idea

be careful when doing what the instructions say. They say to tape it to the facia to line it up using masking or duct tape. That spoiler is very porous. I used duct tape and the dam sticky crap would not come off. i used everything from dawn soap to pam spray. I probably should have let it sit for a while but I got antsy and scrubbed it a plastic brush. dummy me, i scrubbed the black off of it.
I'll touch it up with some flat black paint is only thing I can think that would halfway match. plus mine was a little warped in 1 spot when I got it. probably from the molding process. Anyone got a suggestion to get that out. It shows. it aint perfect. but it still looks ok

Most tapes are not good since heat will make the glue stick to what ever its attached to. Best thing to use is painters tape blue one.

yes u shoudl paint ur chin spoiler if u get one it will look good on ur car it doesn't on all cars but yours i bet it would

Use the little clamp thingies, they dont leave tape residue and dont fall off like painters tape.

Exactly what I did. Just some cheap plastic spring loaded clamps from harbor freight. I think they were a couple bucks for 10 of em.

Dam I wish I would have thought of that..:pain10: My chin spoiler is about 1/16" off from side to side. Not really noticable unless you look for it but I see it everytime I look at it. I was in a hurry to get it done and I took shortcuts. I have started some cures for it though. Elongating the original holes in the bumper to make it (adjustable) and then securing the spoiler with small 10/32 nuts and bolts. I'll work it where it needs to be. I love to fabricate. LOL:tongue9:

But I still can't figure out why a solid piece of black plastic got that discolored from scrubbing with a hard plastic brush.??

here's a pic of my discoloration on chin spoiler. Nothing short of painting it has worked. can you see the 3 small spots at the edge of facia where I taped it? and the center of the spoiler itself. Gaaad that's ugly. I should probably just get a whole new spoiler and do it right this time:book1:

Take yourself over to an Ace hardware and grab a can of Krylon Fusion Satin Black paint. Fusion is made for plasic, and bonds to it permenently. Just make sure to wipe your spoiler down with some denatured alcohol to remove any Armor All type stuff you might have used on it.

used the buddy system to install mine. I thought the same thing about the tape so I called some friends, 2 held it in place while myself and another went under and marked all the holes to drill. Took a grand total of 15 minutes and 8 beers. :evil6:

Does anyone have pics of the spoiler installed on a Mineral Gray GT?

we used jack stands and clamps to hold mine up until we got it just perfect.. and then we put a lot more screws in than the 3-4 measily ones they supplied (bought mine from ford)

Yeah, I would not use what ford gives you. I don't even see how those hold it up at high speeds and everything else. I used stainless steal bolts, washers and nuts to put mine on and it isn't going anywere.

i believe we went with bolts, washers, and nuts like you said.. not screws :D that thing is on there tight too!

the screws that came with the chin spoiler worked just fine for me... that thing is never falling off

Imo you might want to re-think the whole screw the chin spoiler on thing. The reason I say that is because its alot cheaper to buy another chin spoiler than a new front bumper.

If something hits the chin spoiler and it cannot come off of the bumper you might damage the bumper. Where if you use the plastic fastners the spoiler will most likely come off without damage to the bumper.

I used the plastic push fastners MT supplied me and I had to get a few extra from Autozone.

Just food for thought.

Yep, very good point. The plastic push fasteners are cheap, just drill a few more holes through the chin spoiler and bumper. Worked very well for me and the chin spoiler is very secure.

I scratched my chin spoiler all up last night :( Well the place where it hit there was sand like gravel there so I dunno how bad the damage really is cuz its kinda dirty :( I guess they are cheap enough just to replace anyways.

Do you have to put the car up on a rack to drill the holes? How many do you have to drill?

i just put the front on jack stands to do it, dont remember how many holes

That is why i dont want to put on the chin spoiler, mine is still sitting in the car! because I am too afraid of the clearance that I will get when i put it on. That is why i am waiting till i get new tires n rims. Because then hopefully it will give me more clearance!

When i get my cobra r front I think they are saying I will have 5 to 6 inches of clearance with a lip sticking 2 inches or so out the front...guess im going sideways up steep inclines :p
