I bought this car w/blk-tan interior and after spending to much money on a center console and purchasing a black steering wheel I decided to dye my tan parts over to black. I used a Red Scotchbrite Pad = to 300 grit sandpaper w/alcohol to clean off any old ArmorAll or cleaners to take off all residue.Wiped down w/wet rag and let dry.
Now, for prduct I used Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter and their brand of Black spray dye. HOWEVER, I had no clue how flat their flat balck was gonna be so I did the rear panels (the whole thing) in gloss black. I could've just done the bottom that was tan, but since I was taking the car apart why not do the whole darn thing. I also did the doors in gloss black as well. The only problem w/that was that the glossy is pretty glossy and "kind of" doesnt jive w/the dash that I just finished in Flat Black. I must admit, their Flat Black pretty well matches the upper part of the dash. Oh, forgot to mentioned that I got a used carpet off ebay. Here come the Before/After pics. Figured I'd show ya all the work I've been doing lately. Have to upload pics of the finished dash tonight. Sorry. Needless to say, the dash came out pretty good.

 

Talk about a pain in the ****,,,taping this think up,,,Geeeez.





WARNING: If you decide to take on something like this,,it's not hard at atl BUT the dye/paint is VERY sensitive to temp. and humidity. I had some issues w/rushing my work and not payin attention to the weather and the dash "blushed" on me couple times due to weather. Try to do it outside and get some heat in the car. Apply several light coats and you will be fine. Finished product pics coming tonight.

 

Looks real good it would be good to do follow up as far as how it holds over time.

Looking nice, Im doing the same to my interior but im working with bondo and hopefully getting a spray Gun and adding a Tribal Skull on the dash.

 

got a question...did you use the ford interior dye? also, how is the feel (ie: does it feel sticky)? can you use armor all on it after painting it? does it chip off easy?

I did my door panels and center console in Krylon Fusion Red 2 years ago, and they are still holding up strong.


This isn't the best picture, but it's all I have right now. The door panel looks orange in this picture cuz of the light, but its the exact same color as the center console. I decided NOT to clearcoat it, to keep it more of a matte color. FWIW, I also painted the little rubber cupholder insert with the Fusion, and it hasn't even scuffed yet. I used it almost every day when the car was a D/D.

 

thats all with NO clear? thats awesome! What did you use to clean it with ?

 

Lol, gasoline I ran out of denatured alcohol and mineral spirts, both of which are the best thing to use, but some good ol 93 octane mower gas and some rubbing alcohol does the trick too.

I didn't sand it either...just put about 4 - 7 coats on.

 

I think there will be some painting in my future....I just got some interior spray from Randy a couple weeks ago...I want it all BLACK, not grey anymore. I just dont want it to look ****ty, bc then I will be forced to buy all new stuff (I am picky like that)

 

My interior is in the shop right now being sanded.. the best way to keep the Paint looking normal is using primer. I talked with a autobody guy about it and he said it would be fine. If you dont want to do that get 3M 82-37 at oriellys $40. $300. for the gun its sandable and paintable.

Btw how did you get your center console out?

 

You have to remove the radio first...I just bent a coat hanger to fit in the removal slots and pushed out and pulled. There are two bolts on the front of the trim piece, and one back in behind the radio that bolts to the firewall.

The shifter bezel pops right out. All you have to do is disconnect the Cigarette lighter wires after the bezel is loose.

 

how long did it take you to do all this? few days/weeks?

 

Who? Me? Bout 4 hours, including removing the panels, 3 coats, drying time, and reinstallation Krylon Fusion rocks! :headbang:

 

Mines taking longer because im actually smoothing the interior down until I get it fiberglassed.

 

i'm basically looking for a way to "clean up" my interior, it's all scuffed and on my cd-bezel it's all chipped up

 

Took me a month or so, but that was due to atmospheric conditions out of my control. With high humidity do not even attempt to spray paint anything. Just make sure you use some sort of primer/adhesion promoter before the paint so it doesnt peel/chip.

 

You can use light coats of Bondo on very few places after spraying the primer and letting it dry. Your best best is to us 60 grit...then 120 to smooth it out.

 

I hate the tan interiors in these cars...anyways good job.

 

Thnk you very much. It's holding up well. Couple of scuffs on the door sill plates, but that was expected. Will just buy some black ones and be done w/it.

 

I'm really thinking about dying my inside black...now I have a concern are you able to clean your dash with cleaning products such as Meguiars Dash Cleaner or something along that line will that mess up the look or come off? Anything of that nature?

 

No problems whatsoever when it comes to using cleaning products on the painted parts. I dont like the really wet/shiny stuff on my interior so I use a low gloss product. No worries.

 

what type of paint did u use for door sills? and how many coats?

 

I used the same stuff that I died the panels/dashboard with. Dupli-Color interior dye. Found at Advanced Auto parts, or any auto parts place. I used a minimum of 3 coats.

So, let me get this straight. You remove the plastic panels from the car, prep them with alchohol, and then paint them with three coats. No other primer or prep used before painting? Also, is that paint you used a type of spraypaint?

 

Red scothchbrite pad,,,,rubbing alcohol for a cleaner or whatever you choose. Just make sure to get all the armor all or whatever you use to detail your car off. Prep w/the adhesion promoter and then a couple coats of the dye. That's it.

 

I did my interior as well, but I jsut did all the pop out plastic trim pieces. Definately use alcohol as a cleaner though.

Also, how did you get off the cover of the steering wheel??? I want to paing the pony and the little indents as well... it would be much easier on a flat surface like a table rather than do it in the car
