nitrous question?

I currently have a 2003 Mustang GT and I am interested in installing a nitrous system. I was just wondering which would be the best system for me. I have a C&L mass air kit installed. I heard that leans you out. I also want to get some 3.73's to go with my diablosport tuner. I know that the tuner advances spark timing. So my question is, would I have to get a custom tune for the Nitrous kit and what would be the safest way for my setup? I am not sure which kit to go with, NX, Venom, Zex, etc... any suggestions? thanks

I am putting this thread in the Power Adder Forum. Asking Randy a question is for inquiring about Ford parts.

Please check some of the nitrous threads, you will get most of your questions answered.

1 - Ditch the C&L Mass air kit ESPECIALLY with nitrous. Sorry, just being honest.

2 - 3.73's are a great fit with nitrous...so are 4.10's if you don't go to a large shot. Plenty of guys around here running 4.10's on the bottle (me).

3 - You can run nitrous on stock timing if you keep your shot to about a 75 shot, but optimally you are supposed to retard your timing one degree for every 50 shot. Yes, your Diablo should be able to be equipped with a separate tune for doing this. IMO, a switchable chip is better suited for nitrous so you can swap your tunes back an forth on the fly.

4 - If you want the safest possible kit and are happy with about a 100 shot, then go Venom. If you would like to get really serious about nitrous and go for larger hits, then get an NX wet. No kit is really better then the other, it all depends on how you wish to use the spray. I have a Venom. Be sure to read some of my posts about the setup.

Thanks for answering all of my questions. I had a feeling about that mass air kit. Which intake system should I use? how about the c&l inlet pipe. Should I hold on to that and use an intake with my stock mass air housing?

You can either go back to a stock setup or get just about any after-market cold air intake. Just be sure to use the stock MAF and stock MAF housing no matter what.

You can keep the C&L inlet pipe. It is actually a nice pipe to use for nitrous because it has a injector location already on it.

Some CAI's come with a pipe, however.

If you want to sell the C&L Mass Air Kit, you may want to on Ebay. Most guys on the forums don't use them.

Don't fee bad, I had one of these at one time and learned the hard way.

I made sure that I saved my stock mass air housing unit. I never felt too confident about the c&l kit, although I do like the inlet tube because of the nitrous boss. What I will do is get another CAI and probably keep the inlet pipe for something to tap into. Thanks you have been very helpful.

Incidently, I use a Steeda CAI. I sold my C&L Pipe as the Steeda had one with it. I spray right inter the Steeda pipe, but the C&L would have been better suited for it. In the end, I don't think it made much of a difference.

What problems would I have encountered running nitrous using the mass air kit? Also what are the main reasons the kit is a no go for most people? thanks

Good question. The MAF kit from C&L is designed to "trick" your ECU and results in leaning out the a/f. That is exactly how it is designed to work. It is not a true after-market MAF as it utilizes the stock sensor.

Adding hp by leaning up the a/f is nothing new, but this kit can lean up way too much especially if you have other mods. When adding nitrous, being too lean is always an issue. So, if you are lean to begin with, you are asking for trouble.

A tuner can account for this, but that essentially destroys the entire purpose of having the Mass Air Kit in the first place.

You are exactly right. I had those exact thoughts in the back of mind. It would definately defeat the purpose of the mass air kit by using the tuner to correct the problem. I have noticed that other mass air kits utilize after market sensors that are specifically for injector sizes as well, but the c&l uses the stock sensor. I know that when I add nitrous, I will be changing out the mass air kit for a Steeda intake. One more quick question: Do you know if the intake kits come with the screws to connect the stock mass air housing? I seem to have misplaced mine. Since they are not needed with the c&l and I got rid of my old intake I don't have the screws anymore.
