Question My first blower

I'm finally seriously looking into getting my first supercharger but I am looking into getting the cheapest possible setup since I will be paying for college next year. I'm also a little leary of tapping the oil pan..so I am considering a Powerdyne BD600. I know not a whole lot of people have these and they don't make a whole lot of power but what have you heard about them? Also, will I need to upgrade my fuel pump and injectors?

they are cheapily made and i have seen some pictures of some that make me eecch. I wouldnt put a powerdyne on my car. maybe if i was only gonna run minor boost just to gain something for highway merging purposes.

procharger would be your best bet if you are not wanting to tap the oil pan. they are self-contained and you can look around for a used one. The procharger kit comes with a fuel pump i think. the only thing i had to buy seperate was the injectors.

Vortech now offers a self-libricating supercharger-the v3 Si. Its between an s-trim and t-trim in size.

eh...i like the superchargers that tie into your existing oil system...this way you dont have to take the head unit off to change the oil....

taping your oil pan is not hard at all....you just punch it and then you thread the drain line into it...thats it....and funny thing is that is probably the hardest part of the install....the rest is just bolt up to your timing cover and throw the belt on

OP: dont get a powerdyne...theyre crap you can get used paxtons, ati's, vortechs and kenne bells for a decent price.

+1 those powerdynes are junk. You would save money by going with a better setup like procharger or vortech because you WILL be disappointed with the powerdyne and youll waste money on it. I cant see you making more than 320whp with it non intercooled. Its not even worth the money IMO. Powerdynes are not "safer" because they make less power either. You could still easily blow your motor if it doesnt have a decent tune with 320whp. The tune is the key to bieng safe with anything like nitrous, turbo, or any supercharger. Listen to what people are saying because these are not simply "opinions". These guys have been down the road a time or two with boosting their cars and they have alot more experience with it. There have been many engines destroyed after the weak impeller and drive system fails on their powerdyne units, causing the pieces to make their way into your intake. Honestly you should be running a minimum of 8psi. That will make at least 340-360whp on a non intercooled vortech setup and more like 370whp on an intercooled procharger. Extremely safe on stock internals with a good tune. I had a vortech s-trim with paxton 2 core intercooler and it made 400whp/400wtq on 8psi. I beat on my car alot too and not ever had a single problem. Its your car though and I guess you will do what you want with it, but just try to stay open for advice.

Yeah I'm glad I've asked. I didn't buy that Powerdyne. I'm not so sure I want to supercharge it now. I don't know a whole lot about it and there are no performance shops to talk to around here. I think I will just stick to gears, short throw shifter, etc..

if u dont want to gain much HP then don't buy one...lol buying cheap aint the way!

i like my procharger kit...self contained so you dont have to tap the oil pan...and u dont have to take the head unit off just to change the oil like someone said.

i only make 8lbs of boost and push 365rwhp...

i found my kit used for 2800 with everything but a MAF and a fuel pump.

but i have seen vortech kits go for pretty cheap.

ya id rather ya get gears and such over a powerdyne. cheap made crap.

look into amazon tuning solutions if your looking at someone to tune your car. they do mail order tunes and from what i have heard over on svtperformance they are one of the best out there.

just sayin cause you mentioned no performance shop by you.

When it comes to FI, you either do it right the first time or do you don't bother at all. If I were you, I'd wait and save up for something better. If you look carefully and is patient, you may be able to find someone who is selling a KB 1.7L kit for cheap. Used Vortech kits are selling for low prices as well.

02Laser just gave you the lecture I would have. Do it right or don't bother. Vortech, Paxton, KB. ATI never impressed me.

The words supercharger and doing it cheap should not even be in the same sentence. With that said, buying used can be a great way to go. There are a lot of people out there with bigger budgets then they have money. They buy stuff, install it, then can't make their trailer payment (no offense), or just have a life alterting moment, and somehow, the blowers always seem to have to get sold. I got mine used and paid $3k for a $5k kit that was only 6 months old. That included EVERYTHING including an I/C.

Also, never think you will be satisfied with 5 psi....you won't. You can make 10 - 12 psi on these cars, so you might as well make that much if you are going to go through the effort.

Lastly, consider re-sale. You may save some money going with a cheap blower, but no one will want your car if they are smart when you go to sell it.

If now is not the right time, then hold-off. Unless you have money to burn, blowers are not a priority.

good info...

glad you stepped back from the powerdyne.

ive had my porcharger for over 3 years now and havent had one problem. the only thing i am regretting is not going with a better head unit.

my next plans is a custom HPP turbo kit and around 550rwhp minimum. listen to the previous post above me. you wont be happy with low boost for long. it is addicting.

I am an addict and show no signs of recovery.
