shifting into 5th

i feel like a moron for asking this question but how bad is it to shift into 5th while spraying....lol i kno its bad but my car goes thru the gears so fast and sumtimes im in 5th still accelerating ....i have 4.10s

Its bad. What are you crossing the traps at in 4th?

bikerjoe 04-19-2006 01:42 PM

ok with out the nitrous i cross the traps with the red leds from my shift light blinding me which are set at 5500rpm...and my fastest trap speed was 101.somthin..i kno its bad cause its an overdrive gear but i mean what would happen??

i havnt even sprayed it yet at the track so im a lil concerned that the 4.10s are gonna be a prob at the track with nitrous but not for traction but for top end ...

Why dont you raise your rev limiter a bit, and when your at the track and about to hit fifth dont spray

As long as your engine is running above about 3000-3500rpms then it wouldnt be a problem. It doesnt really matter but I dont see why you would want to spray in 5th?? I really would try to avoid spraying it at higher speeds if you can. It is harder on the engine than if you were going slow. Its just like why cars use more gas at higher speeds than at lower speeds. I have topped my car out on the spray to 150mph one time and it ran fine but it was tired feeling after. That feeling is a good sign that you need to park your car and let it rest.

Remember you shouldnt be spraying more than about 15 seconds or the solenoids could freeze open and it wont stop spraying until the bottle is empty......even after the engine blows and the intake pops.

Bottom line is: I wouldnt do it. Unless a cobra wants to run you then id keep it out of 5th gear.

word lol

Unless you're crossing the traps at over 6200 rpms I wouldnt shift into 5th. Itll only slow you down and bust your tranny.

bikerjoe 04-21-2006 11:53 AM

should i raise the limiter to 6200 rpm then...

Dont raise your limiter. The limiter is there so you dont float yer valves.....

The power I get from the plate starts to fade off at about 5000rpms. If your is the same then you would probably be alot faster if you just shifted.

I dissagree. Shifting into another gear will slow you down. The less shifting you do the faster the car will be. Plus its terrible on the tranny. I can guarentee youll be investing in a new tranny if you keep doing it. You can rev your car to 6k no problem. I know guys that would rev to 6300 on a 100 shot with stock block/ heads. And yes I would raise your limiter. If you hit it while spraying then BOOM. Same as goes if you miss a gear. You shouldnt be shifting into 5th doing a 1/4 mile. Auto guys get into third crossing the traps around 6200-6300 with 4.10's and 26" tires. I say set your LIMITER to 6500, set your shift light at 5500. I say 5500 because there will be a delay in shifting from when you actually see the light and when you shift. Figure out what your reactions are like and adjust the SHIFT LIGHT from there.
