cut coupe springs in my 10th aniv vert

Haven't whored some pics lately. Picked up some Cobra coupe springs and cut off 1/2 coil from the front and 5/8 coil from the rears. Took out the top isos from the front, used both isos in back still. I will probably take out the upper isos from the back to drop it a bit more when I get the energy and I have to get some spacers on the rear wheels to push them out a little more.

Why don't you just get some good springs? :D

cobra1923 03-29-2009 07:06 PM

Cobra coupe springs are actually a pretty decent spring, plus I got them for free. I also didn't want too low of a drop that comes with most of the aftermarket springs, I got a family to drag around to car shows and don't want to scrape.

jon2325 03-29-2009 07:15 PM

lol, looks good but you're gonna get bashed for cutting them

cobra1923 03-30-2009 10:38 AM

I would never cut any of the Mustangs I've had (other than a little off the "dead" coil of a FMS C Spring to level the rear out).

The Cobra springs are 600Lb linear so cutting them isn't as catastrophic as cutting regular mustang's progressive rate springs. The 1/2-3/4 of a coil I cut dropped by about 3/4 of an inch all the way around. The vert Cobra springs are softer (for a more cushy ride) so these really stiffen up the ride and get the fenderwells closer to the tires.

I really didn't want to dump $2-300 into a spring thatwould drop me too far down when ultimately, I want to get coil-overs some day. I thought this would be a satisfactory middle ground for now.

knife13 03-30-2009 11:18 AM

didn't it cost $2-300 worth of time and effort to cut the stock springs.....when you cut the springs you increased the spring rate, im not sure what your referring to as "catastrophic". You probably eliminated some of the wheelhop compared to your stock vert springs. Although, long story short I would have bought a set of coil-overs instead of wasting my time cutting stock springs

mustangvsix 03-30-2009 01:28 PM

the drop looks great man!

Nah, took me like 15 minutes with a cutoff wheel, 3 hours to install myself in the garage with the kids interrupting. Maybe I misunderstood a linear spring, but I thought a 600Lb linear spring was 600Lbs, regardless on the spring height. Whereas a progressive spring relies on each successive coil to make up the overall spring rating. So cutting a progressive spring would drastically alter the spring rating and make for the uncomfortable ride and bottoming out that so many people talk about?

I would love to get the coil-over, but it's a hefty price for me personally to pay right now... Once the kids are out of day-care, the mods can pick up where they left off.

Did the coupe springs have the pigtails on the bottoms of the rear set? How did you cut them?

spike_africa 03-30-2009 05:50 PM

He just cut the dead spring not the coils it will not effect the ride at all.

No pigtail, just cut 1/2 coil from the top. You can tell the bottom of the springs as they are more tightly wound and will sit relatively flat on the ground. You don't want to cut the bottom.

If I remember correctly, the stock Mustang spring has a kind of turned in coil on the top.

Thanks Lance.. After looking at it for a couple weeks, the rear has to come down a bit more.

The 10th anniv wheels look very similar to ones also produced by Audi and Benz

OK, so here we go. cut off another 1/8 coil to make for a grand total of 11/16 of a coil off of the rears. Took some twisting, and testing...and some twisting and testing... they are both dead on at 27" flat on the rear and 26" flat on the front.

Looks sweet. Baltimore eh? I was there not too long ago. Nice wheels.

super nice cobra man!!!!

mustangvsix 04-06-2009 09:47 PM

very nice man, that little extra really sets it off nicely! Might I suggest some wheel spacers if you plan to keep running the 10th anniv. rims. They look great, but like all factory mustangs it just looks so goofy having the rear rims tucked in further than the front rims.

SeanStang 04-06-2009 10:37 PM

Much better, looks great man!!! +1 on the rear spacers.

No, he's got a valid point, and I see it too. It's mostly the wheels, but the front end gives off a beemer tone too.

cobra1923 04-07-2009 05:28 PM

Thanks for the props.. I've been told 30mm spacers will put the stock 9" wheels right to the egde with no rubbing issues
