The start of my fiberglass enclosures

I need something that looks good to put my 8's in (JL8w1s that are sitting in Q logic boxes right now) so I figured I would glass some molded enclosures.

I went out today and got this much done before class.

I used to be into BIG systems but I can't make myself do it in the stang. Plus it's a vert lol. The JL 8's hit HARD, if you have never heard JL...you would be surprised

They are also very light and require hardly any airspace to sound GREAT.

Anyway, Next to do is buy the fleece to glass the enclosures in, then start the bondo work. It's hard to find time between classes so it might be a few weeks.

I have two 10" JL W1's, and love them

floppy 05-09-2006 01:10 PM

looks like a good start man, cant wait to see more pics.

i used to be really big into car audio also until i got the stang. now it takes the back seat to speed. i have a whole stereo setup that i was going to put into my car that has been sitting for a little over a year in the garage..

Ghostalker 05-09-2006 01:16 PM

OMG THAT IS A DIRTY MUSTANG
Good luck on the custom fiber enclosures :punk:

94StangGTVert 05-09-2006 02:00 PM

Thanks guys, lol yes it is dirty...Can't keep it clean out in the sticks. My driveway is all gravel and about an 1/8th mile long.

I wash it all the time too :(

mcmmotorsports 05-09-2006 05:30 PM

Don't worry about the filth. As long as it is clean for car shows, cruises and other Mustang events. Now, I have seen others do this type of custom work and it looks like you are on the way to a GREAT setup. Once I finish my HP mods, I am going to direct my attention to da ice.:shifty:

94StangGTVert 05-09-2006 05:33 PM

Thanks, I am addicted to ice...Holding myself back on the stang, just going tasteful lol

Ghostalker 05-09-2006 07:33 PM

i never got big into ICE... i might have my brother design me a new system like he did his own (he got a sick new head unit, nice amp, nice sub and enclosure, amazing fronts and rears all for 900, should have cost him more than 2500... he is good at this stuff and works at tweeter for the discounts+ free tickets) but nothing flashy with fiberglass, prolly go hidden enclosure with the sub and amp.

94StangGTVert 05-11-2006 09:20 AM

A couple new pics, I might do some more this weekend if time/money allows it

Not to take this thread off topic, but would one 8" JL 8w1 be enough to add musical bass? I dont need something that will rattle my car... just a little extra bass to make everything sound better.

94StangGTVert 05-11-2006 09:48 AM

Yes, I used to sell car audio and from experience I can say one JL 8" sub, in a correctly tuned box is louder then quite a few 10's and even some 12's. Until you get into high end stuff of course, but then you have high end JL to compete with that as well.

All of this, while keeping great sound quality in most cases.

Blk02stang 05-11-2006 11:48 AM

Looks like a good start so far, cant wait to see the finished product. I let JL do the hard work in my '02 conv. stang, Got the custom stealth fiberglass enclosure with a 10w6 in it...100mph with the top down on the Interstate and it still was bumpin hard!

01GTBlown 05-11-2006 12:03 PM

Why not convert the spare tire spot into a box? Ive always wanted to put a 10 or 12 in there, just haven't gotten to it.

02gtpit 05-11-2006 04:44 PM

JL's in a sealed box FTW!!!

Not really the look I wanted and it takes up to much trunk space!

I think these enclosures will look sleek and not too over the top. While still letting me use my trunk when I need to.

Fleeced and glassed!

I don't know much about making fiberglass boxes...When you say fleeced, what kind of material is that and where would you get that?

Fleece lol, I got it at walmart, 4.44 a yard. 2 yards was more then enough

01GTBlown 05-12-2006 11:42 AM

Why do you use fleece instead of just regular cloth? from googling it i see most people that use regular cloth end up putting a ton of layers down to reinforce it...

The "cloth" is what I used for the inside of the box, It makes it strong...I use fiberglass cloth, or chop mat. I have also used old t shirts for smaller projects, like an airbag cover, I glassed an lcd screen into it using a t shirt and resin

The fleece is used because it stretches and conforms to things easily, and it also soaks up a TON of resin so its very strong.

Last update of the day, Im too tired to start the bondo work...Might do it tomorrow, might not lol

DarkSith 05-14-2006 03:12 PM

Thats pretty cool, If I ever put speakers into my car I would like to do something like that. Did you get them painted by a pro, Or did you paint them with some duplicolor type spraypaint?

94StangGTVert 05-14-2006 05:09 PM

I sprayed em, I put them in the car and they sound GREAT but they dont match my trunk, Im gonna carpet them. They will look 100 times better
