May need an oil pressure sending unit...or worse.

Randy, stang has been sitting since 11/1. I pulled it out just to run it, wash it, and put my new trickle charger on the battery.

To my amazment, I look at my oil pressure guage while the car is at idle and the guage is all the way to the left as in ZERO. I tap the throttle and it jumps up to normal. Sits there a while, then falls back off.

Now, I seriously doubt I have an oil pressure problem. No SES came on or low oil pressure light either. Car sounded fine and this event repeated itself about 10 times before it just stopped jumping and the guage read normal.

The guage was dropping off as if I had turned the car off. Does this sound like the sending unit is bad? Is there anmything I can do to verify? How can I be sure the pressure is good?

Looks like I am starting to amass a nice order. I still need the some pullies and a few other things, I wonder if I should just get an oil sender. I hear it is located by the oil filter.

Do those things just go bad, or do you think it could be loose?

before my engine blew, my oil guage was doing the same thing, come to find out the oil pump was bad, just thought you might want to know that

Sounds like I should not take this lightly! Thanks for the comments. Looks like I should replace the sending unit and even have the oil pump checked. Can't hurt and it is such a critical piece.

I wonder what is involved to check.

I have a call into Randy and I will see what he says and then order what I need.

Randy Stinchcomb 12-28-2006 09:47 AM

Randy, keep in mind that I have a Novi2000, so the second line is for the oil to the blower. I don't know if this is the supply or the return line. I think it is the supply, correct.

Also, the red strap is disconnected. Take a look.

I am not sure where the strap is supposed to go, but I believe it may have come from here:

This picture is just in front of the oil filter.

Randy Stinchcomb 12-29-2006 05:50 AM

well I see some issues.

1st is that red wire is a EEC engine to frame ground strap and SHOULD be hooked-up.

now from what I see on the oil filter housing is it IS a Windsor set-up that someone has already Tee'd into, so adding another "T" is not a good idea.
you'll either have to but a Romeo oil filter adapter on or delete the factory electric oil sender/idiot lite/gauge and install your mechancial o/p gauge in that port

Randy...thanks for your time on the phone.

I forgot to ask you, where does that red strap get bolted? Do you see the phot with the missing bolt? Is that where it came from? Or, do I just go to the frame somewhere?

never a problem, now ther should be a "stud" going thru the engine mount to the engine block, it goes on there wth a 8mm nut

Randy....is this the spot you think?

Randy Stinchcomb 12-29-2006 11:15 AM

yeah, it can go there too.

WaterDR 12-29-2006 12:34 PM

Could that be why my oil pressure guage is acting up? I wonder if it is not getting good ground and thus loosing power.
