Welcome and if you want performance I'd change the gears.Search the forums there is alot of gear threads to help you decide.

Welcome !! Also from Illinois here. These 4.6's need RPM to get going so Id recommend 4.10's then a off orad pipe and catback and a shifter. These mods will make your car a much more enjoyable ride !!!

Go with gears and PI head swap if you do not plan on forced induction.

A PI swap is a good way to make more power, but some find it easier to just swap an entire engine instead. Not sure where you are at in Illinois, but theres is a place in Elgin and also Blue Island that sells 02-04 Explorer engines used for around $1000. These are identical to 99+ GT 4.6's except they are all aluminum saving about 90 lbs of the nose of your car.
