NEw to Mustangs, but we'll try anyway

Hello. My father passed away a while back and I found out that he left me a 98 mustang v6 convertible. It had been sitting for 5 years in Louisiana, the back window was broken out, it had a nice little "bayou" (swamp) in the back, and needed a fuel pump (which daddy had bought, but placed in the back seat as he didn't have the energy to install it). My wife and I went down there (we live in NC) and I decided to install the fuel pump and see what happened. I did that, and the local autozone gave me a new battery (they felt sorry for me I guess, but I won't whine about it) and the poor little car fired right up. It was so cool! So anyway, I drove the car home (some 1100 miles and 5 states away) dodging the police and roadblocks (the license and inspection still said 02/04) on the same old dry-rotted tires, and now it sits in my front yard awaiting my upgrades. I plan on keeping the v6, buying a 3.73 and t-loc, MAC bolt-on exhaust, new top, projector lights (stock barely light up two feet in front of you), shift-kit, tuner, and intake. After this has been accomplished, and I have decided to either stroke it, or buy a crate stroked engine just to upset the GT guys because they can't outrun that little v-6 wusstang.

good plan of mods listed except the projectors. Get a HID kit instead and you will thank me later :D

Welcome to the forums :beerbang:

Thak you all. I will look into the hid's. On a side note, I was a little ricer (honda del sol vtec 13.98 1/4 mile @ 102) before and I loved to bust mustangs because they were (imo) not sports cars (svt, steeda, saleen, rouche excepted) and many of the drivers did nothing to their cars. Now that I have one and am driving it, I see why they were/are such fans of the cars. I know I am not moving as fast as my little two seater but it feels so fast. I try to hit that corner a little faster than I should just to hear the wheels squeal and the back end try to get a little loose. I also love to hear my little grand daughter tell me to go "superfast" and that mustangs go "vroom vroom!" Now I am that a$$hole picking fights with the little hondas (to be honest though, I was back then too. I hated hondas and other imports that put an intake and an exhaust on their car so they sounded like a pist off bumblebee) and weaving in and out of traffic. Will I ever grow out of it, or am I stuck like this forever?

You made fun of mustangs for not being a sports car, but you had a Honda. Nice.

yes, but my honda came stock with racing seats, front and rear sway bars, front tower bar, only year with a stock LSD, and had a 1.6 pushing 160 HP stock. Car also weighed a little over a ton.

oh, and the 0-60 time was 7 secs flat (stock)

and one more in my defense, not all mustangs, but just the 6 cylinder, as well as the 6 cylinder comarro and firebird as well. I even picked on dad for buying a 6 instead of an 8, because he had a 67 with the 8 (289?) that was built. Something about weight distribution and the hard turns. I am making ammends now . . .

Hahahahaha x1000.

welcome, and congrats on the car. i had the same body style and engine before upgrading to a newer GT.

for the headlights, i recommend that you also do HID's, but for new housing you should get the stock cobra headlights and corners. you can find all four on 50resto.com.

as far as your other mods, i like them. tuner, sifter, gears, t-lock, exhaust, intake. in that order. if you are serious about stroking it, i would just buy a stroked 4.2L engine from super six motor sports. the stang sitting for 5 years probably wasn't good for the engine, so IMO no point in building an engine that'll probably fail on you.

I had a buddy with a del sol.....wasnt really that fast stock.
Then he rolled it. Haha.

the del sol was a wierd civic. They had three models the s, the si, and the vtec. Instead of the si being top-of-the-line, the vtec was. It had the b16a, which is the same engine in the civic si, and was called a crx overseas. Overseas the si was called the ser as well. It would be like having the three main mustangs (base, gt, cobra) but instead of the cobra (well known as the meanest and fastest) being top of the line, the GT would be. Anyway, everyone laughed at my little del slow (I even had a del slow decal made for the back) but I had to go out od town to get anyone to race me. Then someone stole it and I got a shell back. I know that 7 secs is not super fast, but when you think that from 0-5600 RPM the engine isn't making any power it is pretty good. Also 60 was accomplished in 2nd gear so there were fewer shifts. It also came stock with a final drive of 4.10. Anyway, I loved the little car for what it was; an engine dragging two balls. The mustang only had 68k on it when we went to get it, otherwise I would have left it sitting there. I checked the oil, and there was no water, so we drove it home with no problems. One question I do have about it is the head gaskets. I know the older Ford 3.8's were notorious for popping head gaskets, and the first thing you did when you got one was replace it with an aftermarket one. Are these the same, or did Ford fix that? Daddy also had a 79 F-100 with a 427 out of an AC cobra. I did not get that truck, however.
