bassman scores a hole in 1.
the vortech bracket should just fit. The front covers of the 2v aren't that different. There may be some minor modifications needed but I wouldn't hesitate to do it if I were in your shoes. For best results with a 5.4 you'll need a big blower.. like a T trim, to flow enough for consistant boost. |

I should point out, that 4.6 is a 01-04 SOHC Mustang 4.6 I posted earlier. The 5.4 is a late 90's early 2k F150
The 99-00 DOES have a different idler setup, which is what threw me off. It appears that the idler, and tensioner are swapped. Here is the 99-00 SOHC Mustang 4.6 ![]() |

in any case, the mustang bracket for vortech (and other) blowers is on the passenger side and takes up the top where changes are part of the game. the cool bit is the 5.4's seem to have had the added height grafted on to the tops of the front cover so the pully arrangement is still basically standard modular motor bolt up easy-ness and there shouldn't even be any major blower height problems... though the discharge piping will likely need some tinkering.

hey,
looks like your guys are still up to the good ol stuff...of the 5.4 build..i can't wait to get back so i can start it up...r3d looks like you have it coming along with that comp...and all....hope the price is right..LOL...i'm gonna start ordering the parts and have them sent to the house so i will have them there when i get back so i can get to work on this project...i'm still looking at getting the short block and having it shipped to the house then getting that donor block like you all talked about for the little parts, etc...i know i have to get my heads in to get cleaned and all (they are all ready P&P)...then go get that good cam...maybe the same as some of you...i think its the 280...not to sure again....my tag is going to be expired when i get back so i can get it renewed then go ahead and drop this in so that will buy me some time to find a shop *wink*...please continue on with this Thread....i'm out here on WestPac now...haven't hit a port yet...thanks for taking the time to read this... |

I picked a cam that I'm pretty certain won't be able to pass smog without some level of chicanery on my part. I've decided that the overall power is important enough to me that I'm willing to put 4 cats on my X pipe.
I have a chance to get myself a couple Viper cats which are FUGGIN huge and maybe use those but I like the smaller easier to remove extra set of standard high flow types cuz I can pull out a set between smog years. In any case, motor should be done in 3 weeks and then install will be very quick after that. |

Just a quick update about the belt routing information.
I was looking at my 01 GT and noticed the information about idlers that I posted above IS WRONG I had the 99-00 and 01-04 Mustangs flipped - Here is the proper shakedown. 1999 - 2000 Mustang GT SOHC 2001 - 2004 Mustang GT ![]() 1997 - 2003 F-150 5.4L * Superchargersonline.com lists 3 different kids per these years, 97-98, 99-01, 99-03 all of which have the same photo. ![]() Which means 5.4 SOHC stangers that plan to run a Vortech will probably need the 99-00 Vortech Mustang kit. |

Here is some more reading on timing covers and the like for the 4.6.
This one states that the 96-98, as well as 01-04 Mustangs are the same. I'm lost here. http://www.babcox.com/editorial/ar/eb40228.htm ![]() |

So guys tell me something, i'm definitly keeping my 4r70w and i'm going to put in 3.73's. I'm going to have a custom cam made for it, to suit the longer stroke so it will draw more air in. So i'm curious, what stall torque converter should i go with. I'm thinking about something in the 3k range? maybe.

Stick with around 2500 for a good street/strip converter. This motor setup will make plenty of torque, but the rpm will really be limited to i'd say around 5500 tops on a stock bottom end. Remember, You stall rating is the rpm that the converter will basicly lock up and transfer 100% power back with no converter slipage. the sooner you get it locked up, the better, specialy for a street car.

choose your converter to match your power band. I'd bet a really low stall would be cool since you have gobs of tq down very low in the rpm band.

i guess, i might have to talk to a converter guy i know on one of the forums. But first i really need to find out what cam i want to use so i can know what to tell him. I won't be going over 5500 rpm anyway, more or less just use the factory shift point which is set there, man i can just feel the torque now. High Cr. 5.4 with a good cam, gears, and a good converter. Man, can't wait.

Yes. So timing cover, chains, and tensioner arms. I believe the tensioner is the same between the 4.6 and 5.4 so you can get that from your 4.6. Also, for heads, you need to stick w/ Windsor heads since even though the Romeo heads will bolt up, the timing cover uses larger bolts to connect itself to the heads. So, to make it work, you either need to get a washer under the bolt (which probably isn't the best solution) or enlarge the holes on the heads. Just remember, if you buy everything new, you have to buy everything. If you buy a used engine, you can chose what to use and what to put on eBay.

you wouldn't believe all the little nuts and bolts i was missing from that yo-yo shop pulling my motor. i have made about 50 trips to the auto parts store and lowes for nuts and bolts and washers. if you have a complete donor motor you will save yourself alot of cussing, stomping, etc when u are putting it together.

I got 2 complete motors plus a spare 4.6 just so I'd have all the parts I'd need on hand. The tensioner arms and guides are unique to the 5.4 and v10 IIRC. In any case, it's worth it normally... having a fully complete motor to compare notes on is handy like a pocket on a shirt.
My fox lake heads are windsor heads and I had windsor valve covers from the other motors I got. |
