I saw that kit at http://www.proturbokits.com i could build a single turbo kit for $2800 with a 76mm turbo. That's alot cheaper than buying a kit. Thanks for talking me out of the Twin Turbo kit r3dn3ck.

nuh-uh... I didn't talk you out of anything (you're welcome). I presented an option. No prob. I would highly suggest you speak with a turbo specialist who knows the formulas to spec a particular turbo head unit. Proper selection of your impeller wheels is critical to proper turbo performance. Make sure they know what kind of motor you're putting it on and your performance goals. If you haven't figured out your performance goals... now's the time.
FWIW... a 5.4 with a turbo will easily pump out 450hp/500tq at really pump gas friendly boost levels. A 450hp mustang is right at the limit of what I consider an easily street driven car. After that it starts getting hard to enjoy driving it on the street. Don't forget that you'll need a tubular K-member. Griggs would be nice but I'd go with a Maximum Motorsports unit. Can't make a turbo work right without changing the k-member. Plan on that extra 650 bones. |

Great... you have 3 friends with cars I wouldn't want to drive to work every day. Nothing down on them... or you.
My point is that when you have to drive it everyday 600hp becomes a liability for most people. You have to be ever mindful of the fact that no tire in the world is going to stick if you stab the gas just a tad too hard... and a light car with rear wheel drive and a short wheelbase delivering massive power... that makes for loose rear end action which most people frankly can't handle. If your friends are comfy with it... cool. I'm saying that in very real terms a 450rwhp car is a beast that's fun as hell. A 500hp mustang always seemed a little less fun to me. 600+ is just hard to handle in my area. I'm NOT saying that you can't stick a 1000hp monster on the street and drive it every day... I'm saying that doing so is a planet-muther-fukker level pain-in-the-azz enough of the time to not warrant much of anyone doing it. |

I was actually thinking to be around 700 to 800 rwhp. It wont be my daily driver then but just a fun toy to go spank some chevy A$$ with. Or those stupid turbo imports that come from the manufacturer running low 13's. Then bump the boost up some more to Run even better. Screw that. i want some to have almost a full out race car to beat me. Plus to if you look at what the new GTO has 405hp at the flywheel and the new Corvette same thing then the Z06 is 500 something. i don't want a completely stock car beating me after all of my hard work and money going into it.
Oh i bought a Garrett T84 turbo off of a John Deere Tractor for $300 on ebay if it doesn't do what i need i can always resell it. The owner said it would work with built big blocks or small blocks so we will see. Does anyone have a reccomendation for fuel pump and injectors for this application. i am going to look more into it before putting it all together because i want it done right the first time.

That's what i was thinking. It's going to be a gas guzzler.
Hey if anyone wants to attempt porting and polishing there own heads then i found a sight that goes into detail about it. http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.shtm Also they have the accessories for your die grinder available which is sold at Summit racing a lot cheaper. I'm going to get a junk head to see how i do first then if all goes well i will go at it on my 5.4 heads. ![]() Anyone have a junk cylinder head?

porting your own heads is dicey at best. The PI heads aren't really that out of whack. They only need a little work on certain areas. Taking a grinder to them without understanding how they flow and where the shortcomings are will usually result in poorer performance. It's not all removing material. Nuff on that.
That tractor turbo should probably generate like 20lbs.. does it have an adjustable wastegate? You'll want to take it to a turbo specialist and have them set the wastegate for whatever boost pressure you're looking for. For 800hp you'll be needing at least 18-20psi unless you can solve the flow issues. That's not pump gas friendly by any stretch. Alternately you can up the compression to 9-9.5 and get 800hp much easier but you'll have an even bigger octane issue then and have to back off a chunk of timing and run pretty rich. Injectors.. 72's is my best guess... it's gunna idle like a hog with a cough. You'll have to go to a sumped tank with at least an Aeromotive A-1000 fuel pump and you'll have to go to a return style fuel system. Enjoy. |

i have only seen 1 person use a tractor turbo, he had a 95 gt and a procharger p1...run like 12.70's @ 118, went to "DEERE" power, and idled like crap had to use a 2 step to get it off the line but ran 12.0's @ 113?
plus it looked hideous to boot!!!!! i hope yours turns out better than his did... |

update:
Hi-Performance Solutions (www.hiperformancesolutions.com) has officially finished design and tooling for their new 4.6L 2V intake. It's big pimpin and suitable for use on a 5.4 with a set of plates. They should have them ready for delivery in May. I'd ask you all to avoid swamping them with calls and emails unless you're buying an intake so that they can focus on getting the 5.4L intake designed and tooled up. I watch them closely and talk to them pretty regularly so updates should be pretty consistent. |

I just added a Poll to the thread. Please vote when you have a moment. It's important. I need sample data to give to some parts makers.

375 with the install kit. They only made 20 sets so if they're out you may have to wait for the other company that's coming out with a design to hit market... maybe a few months. They'll be a cast design if reports are correct and should be cheaper by a good amount.
The above is a forward looking statement. It may not come true but it also may happen sooner. ![]() |
