Good Upgrade???

I got some income tax money coming in and I want to spoil myself....er....my car with some bolt-ons. I'm not trying to build a track car or anything, I just want to have some power under the hood when I need it. It's like buying a 4x4 Range Rover, you know you'll never use it to off road, but it feels good knowing you could do it.
Anyways, I was planning on buying a C&L plenum with C&L 75mm TB and 3:73 gears. Would I get a pretty good SOTP feel from this?? I know 3:73's will give me that feeling, but will the Plenum/TB combo give me even more???

PS. My car is manual trans.

spike_africa 02-02-2005 09:28 AM

I would do gears and a tune instead of the plenum and tb. this setup will make more power.

madmatt 02-02-2005 01:27 PM

Yea, youll prolly feel more from a tune. Also, I dont believe C&L makes a throttle body do they? Accufab seems to be good.

Stevoneo 02-02-2005 03:14 PM

C&L does make a throttle body but if you are going to get a plenum and TB your best off getting accufab, or really want to get good with spoiling your-self, get the ford racing intake manifold which will give you lower and upper manifold and throttle body adapater

http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...tKeyField=6126

good horsepower gains with this and has better potential than the plastic manifold.

This is a good way to go if you have a little money on hand.

gtnumber2 02-03-2005 06:39 AM

gears and plenum/tb is a good choice. 3.90-4.10s are a better bet.

Red Hott Scott 02-03-2005 08:16 AM

The accufab plenum cost a good $100 more compared to the C&L. Granted it looks better but power wise they're the same. And as long as you don't do a lot of long distance traveling in your car I'd defiently go with higher gears than the 3.73s.

Red Hott Scott 02-03-2005 08:20 AM

Also as far as getting that Bullitt intake manifold, I wouldn't waste the money. At most you'll get 10hp from it, and it cost way too much to only be getting that little amount of power. If you're going to drop $900, get a nitrous system. Can you say 100hp.

I found someone that sells the C&L Plenum/75mm TB combo for $270 (I think that's a good deal). There's also someone near where I live that powdercoats stuff like that and I plan on powdercoating it a certain color. Also, I often take long trips in my car, not daily, but living in Dallas, TX, if you want to go to a cool city or to the beach, you have to drive lots of miles. So, I think 3:73's will be good for me, also considering I'm not going to be going to the dragstrip often. I've never done it, so I may be speaking outta line.

Stevoneo 02-03-2005 01:04 PM

think about the long run. get the Bullitt intake manifold and when you super charge your car you are going to change your intake mainfold any way. You currently have a plastic intake manifold. it would be the same if you are wanting to turbo as well. And you are safer with this if you were to use NOS. The plastic intake manifolds are know to easily pop a hole in it when nos is injected. Although a 100 shot is ok but if you go higher say like 150 you are then pushing limits.

Also when using nos there are aluminum sleaves that can go where your pistons are and this can save a block from cracking if you pump in to much juice. Just a side note.

spike_africa 02-03-2005 04:07 PM

Wow.

You do not need to swap manifolds at all with a blower or turbo or Nitrous (N.O.S. is a brand). you can run well over 150 with that manifold you just have to know what you are doing. But i wont get into this further.

And I quote^^^^^^^^^....I'm not going to super/turbo charge or run NOS, so discussion about intakes can cease. Just want some opinions about how much power I would feel with the 3:73/plenum/TB combo. Or should I do 3:73 and tune, like mentioned above??? Either way, I'm doing 3:73's and one of the other options mentioned.

The gears are a huge improvement, the throttle body and plenum are a very small bang for the buck (even at the 270.00 price) I read a dyno shoot out comparing intakes (all using the same 75mm accufab t/b) and the best intake was the accufab, and that with throttle body only netted 6 more rear wheel horsepower. The C and L produced only a 3 horsepower gain and the trick flow a 2 horsepower gain at the rear wheels, torque numbers resulted the same. Besides a tune, wich you will need anyhow for speedo calibration,I would recommend a set of steeda power pulleys, they cost less than the t/b and plenum and will give you a little more power also.

Besides a tune, wich you will need anyhow for speedo calibration,I would recommend replacing your stock h-pipe with a aftermarket with less restrictive convertors or perhaps no convertors, besides a little more power you will get a nice sounding exhaust rumble. If your not interested in the exhaust route you may want to consider the steeda power pulleys wich will give you more power than the intake combo and cost less also.

Roughly how much RWHP will the power pulleys gain. Ive read so many different opinions on the subject that ive given up on installing any pulleys.

spike_africa 02-04-2005 09:22 AM

Typical gain are around 8RWH. for the price (even more so if you find them used) its a good deal for some extra HP.

Thanks for that info, Buddyabe!!

You Will Have To Let Us Know What You End Up Doing With That Tax Check And How Well It Worked For You.until Then, rock On Dude!

madmatt 02-04-2005 03:16 PM

Yea, you dont need to change your intake manifold when you supercharge your car, but since you dont care, we wont hang on that piece of information. I went with the 3.73s, and I also have the flows/prochamber. Now, I dont want to scare you into a 4.10, but I strongly believe that my drone would be a lot more bearable if I had gone for the 4.10 over the 3.73. You know that our cars drone with this exhaust right about 2100-2300 RPM. Well, with that gear, you are right there in the middle of that range. In 5th at about 60-65, Im at like 2250-2300 RPM. So, if it were me, Id go for the 4.10 over the 3.73. It will also be a lot faster as well with this gear. Just my opinion since I know from experience. Good luck man.

Blue02GT 02-04-2005 05:12 PM

Seat of the pants I agree with Justin.
1. 4.10 gears (great s.o.t.p.)
2. SCT tune 10 - 15 hp best mod I've done
3. Pullies. 5- 10 hp cheap power.
4. X pipe and catback 10 - 15 hp 20+ w/o cats
5. Good ole K & N drop in air filter. 5 hp real cheap 45 bucks.

These are actual numbers, not as good as they advertise but realistic. Power is not cheap on these 2v's.

I have the C & L plenum and Accufab 75 mm TB. No difference in seat of the pants. I did gain 1-2 mph at the top end at the track but that was it. If you have good free flowing exhaust and a tune the plenum/TB might get you 10 rwhp.

buddyabe 02-04-2005 09:33 PM

I have the flowmaster super 40's and the stock H-pipe with 3.73 gears and the drone at 60-65 pisses my wife off. I do own a set of 4.10 gears that I will be installing in the spring but I also want to install a aftermarket o/r pipe,I was told that the pro chamber or a aftermarket H-pipe will make it drone worse? WILL a X-pipe drone less than a prochamber or H-pipe? I would hate the expense of having to buy new quieter mufflers.Would a catted X-pipe such as the mustang tuning one be a good route to go instead?

Blue02GT 02-05-2005 06:24 AM

When I had my 3.73's in mine droned at 62-65 mph. When I installed the 4.30's the drone dropped down so it's gone at highway speeds. I have a catted X pipe and Steeda catback. Just slap in the 4.10's and I bet the drone will be a non issue.

With a mostly stock cr like yours, I wouldnt bother with a tune. Gears, shifter, plenum and T.B. and maybe some pulleys and exhaust. These mods should come before messin with a tune.

P.S. I ported my stock plenum and throttle body myself and picked up .3 and 2.5 MPH. Cost was about $25.

I think I will be going that route as quoted above with 3:73's or 3:90's. I think 4:10's will be a little to steep for the kind of driving I do. I don't really want to get into tunes and have to worry about that. As noted in the original post, I will not be using it for the track, but just to have a little more power at my feet. Anyways, I'll keep you posted as to what I do and what I "feel" from the bolt-ons. Thanks for all your info.
