custom computer program

Hey All.

For various reasons I've 'had' to modify my 2001 GT.

What I've got now are 2001 DOHC cobra heads, cobra intake, throttle body, and cold air intake. I'm using the GT MAF and the only other mod I have is a flowmaster cat back. Also using the stock GT ECM with a jet stage I chip.

The engine runs great above about 2500 RPM. It idles ok. However it has trouble starting, usually takes two turns of the key to start the motor and on the second try it starts and I have to give it just a bit of gas to get it running.

At around 1500-2500 RPM I can drive it but at a constant speed the car jerks slightly, kind like I was quickly giving it a bit of gas then releasing the gas pedal. At that same RPM the engine runs a bit rough to the point that it sometimes want's to die.

The other issue is that sometimes coming off idle it also wants to die and I have to flutter the gas pedal to keep it alive unti it 'catches' again.

I've got an automatic trans as well.

I'm thinking this is due to the obvious change in fuel/air mixture.

So long story short, my question is would a custom computer program or chip solve these issues? (according to Jet tech support they don't due custom programs, for my year mustang anyway) If so how can I get a custom map and know if it will work before spending the money to buy something before test driving it? Also does anyone know of a place in southern california where I can take my car to have this done or is it as simple as ordering a custom program from someone?

Thanks for your help!

You could either go and get a dyno tune, or see if a mail order tune place will do it for you. It sounds to me like your a/f is WAY out of whack. Dyno tune would probably be your best option.

There are many shops in SoCal that do great work on custom tuning stangs. There's only one person down there I'd trust and that's Shawn at SoCal Diablo (last I knew he was there).

My suggestion is to check out the vendor section of the WildHorsesClub.com forums (www.wildhorsesclub.com/mboard). That club is mostly composed of SoCal members and they're a wonderful bunch of guys. If you post in the lounge one of them will probably have a workable suggestion in a few minutes.

Registration for the site is free and they have chapters in Kentucky, Florida, the Carolina's, Tennessee, Chicago, etc...
