Install SLP Loud Mouth

I just purchased a Loud Mouth system at Mustang Tuning and would like to know if anyone out there has experience with the install. I don't expect it to be difficult, but if anyone has any advice?? And yes, I wouldn't mind $200.

pneon99 09-23-2004 10:05 AM

any idea of these SLP Loudmouth Catback (99-04 GT)
void a factory warranty at all or if it does if there any upgrades comparable that can be done that dont void it? i got a factory and extended one from ford

thanks
paul

warranty

The only thing they void your warranty on is the replacement cat-back. In others words, no effect. But I have had problems with Ford honoring my own warranty on a couple of things. I had an extended warranty, also, and cancelled it.

Lamar 09-23-2004 10:29 AM

My only advice, use a lift.

I wanted to install mine myself with a jack and stands but didn't have enough place to remove the stock exhaust (didn't want to cut it), so I paid $15 for the install in an exhaust shop.

And, the sound is AWESOME!

Videos coming soon!

hmm that doesnt sound promising what kinda issues you been having? what do you reccommend to supe up the sound make it louder without voiding warranty?
thanks

Actually I think you misread his post. What he means is Ford will only void the warranty on your CATBACK. So now if something happens with your SLP Catback, obviously they aren't going to replace it. (People don't have problems with catbacks though, he was just making a point that if you replace a part, as long as that part does not alter any other aspect of the car, it will not void any other components warranty).

However, for something like a supercharger, this will void the warranty on most of your engine and drivetrain because they could blame any problems on the added part.

ah thanks for clearing that up very interesting may be a good buy then..
thanks all not much of big car buff just know mustangs fast and i love drivin it...

How loud is the loudmouth? Can you compare it to flowmaster 40 catbacks? I would like my convertible GT to be a little louder than it is but the sound does come thru the top, so too loud will probably get old fast!

WaterDR 09-24-2004 07:58 PM

I love SLP!

If you want your new GT to sound like an old muscle car from the late 60's, YOU WANT SLP.

How loud is it? Loud. But, the catback by itself (stock headers and H pipe) is not too loud to be a daily driver and it is easy to drive quietly. Chris had an OR X pipe with his setup and that was insanely loud. But just the catback, is perfect if you ask me. I would say that is it twice as loud as FM 40's. Keep in mind, there are no baffles with the SLP.

I too have a vert and had the catback by itself for 4 months and now have a catted X pipe (SLP). It sounds great.

Regarding warrenty: Call your after-market warrenty company and ask them. Catbacks can void emissions related problems and rear-end and suspension problems. I know of one case where Ford would not fix a suspension problem because they claimed the added hp from the catback broke it.

Consider this, though, catbacks are the most common mod done probably and your local Ford dealer wants the warrenty work. Introduce yourself to the service manager and ask him. Many of these guys are cool and like cars too. If it were me and I was worried about warrenty, I not hesitate about a catback.

I paid a buddy with a lift $20.00 to put it on.

I was wondering how the exhaust sounds? Would you recomend it over steeda?

GAINS From SLP loud mouth exhaust?

any idea about hp gains?

Pesonal choice. Steeda I think is made by Borla. Both are good systems.

SLP offers some of the best hp gains in the industry. When combined with a cated X, it's a proven 20 -25 rwhp. The catback alone is good for 10 - 11 rwhp.

Look up www.machIregistry.com (not sure if I got the site right), and do a search on catbacks. They had a great article where they actually dynoed three different catbacks and the SLP was one of them. Keep in mind that the Mach I has a 4 valve motor, but I have seen other data on the SLP elsewhere.

I saw a dyno on a 1996 GT w/o PI heads that had an entire SLP catback and was good for 30 rwhp.

Easy DIY....use a lift...fits good, good quality, good sound. Not Magnaflows, not Flowmasters...have their own sound. Louder as you accelerate.
I like 'em and have no regrets - especially the deal I got from these guys! :D

WaterDR 09-26-2004 05:12 AM

A lift is really helpful, but you don't need one. If you have jack stands, you can do it in the drive way. Here is the secret, you can't jack up the rear end. What ever you do, don't jack up the rear such that you compress the rear axle....that's what I mean. And no matter what....be safe. You have to jack the car up higher than normal for doing under car work and you don't need it comming down on you.

If you don't care about the stock exhaust, just cut it off with a saw. It will take three minutes. Otherwise, you have to drop the the rear axle. Keep in mind, the mandrels bend over the rear axle.

It took two guys about 25 minutes to do my swap. You may need something to loosen the bolts from the old exhaust.

SLP Loud Mouth sound

Thanks for the advice. A lift made it much easier. I am very pleased with the sound. Yes, it's loud, but not overly so in the cabin. I can now hear my engine in the cabin, which is what was missing from the OEM system. Besides, if you're afraid of a little rumble, why did you buy a Mustang in the first place? Also, a great deal and even better service from Mustang Tuning!
PS- I would compare these pretty close to Flowmaster 40 Series and American Thunder in sound. Very 60s muscle car. But in a stainless steel package.

I've been wanting to gets some aftcats for my 03 GT, and after looking around I decided to go with SLP. I heard some good things about Bassani, and MAC, but Bassani's SS cats are around $700! I wanted something you could hear and something that wouldn't break my bank account. The recent issue of 5.0 mustang magazine had an article about SLP exhaust. They installed them on a 2000 GT with X-pipes. The article had a lot of good things to say about them and even showed the dyno results after install. The only thing negative they had to say was that at about 4500rmp range it tended to go lean. They said that this problem could be solved with a chip or programmer. Has anybody else ran into this problem? I should be getting them next week and want to be prepared for any problems that I may have. I don't know if having the Xpipes makes a difference in the engine running lean or not, but right now, I am just going with the catback and the only other mod is a BBK CAI. Thanks

Question:

I have not seen that issue. What car did they test and how much HP increase did they find. Regarding the a/f, this is the first I have heard of this. I have the setup and plan on a dyno run in a few weeks. I have an SCT tune for my setup, however.

sigbrown1297 09-30-2004 03:29 PM

The article was posted on the November issue of 5.0 Mustang magazine. The SLP X-pipes and after-cat were tested on a 2001 GT. I think I said 2000 on the original post. "From the dyno, there was an increase across the board from 11-15hp (depending on rmp) with just the X-pipes....Torque was up by 20lb-ft in many spots....With the after-cats, further gain of 6-8 hp...RevXtreme noticed our '01 GT was going lean up to about 4,500 rpm,...but with some tuning (chip or Programmer) the after-cat would have been good for at least 10-12 additional hp...But for a total peak improvement of 19.5 hp and 20.7lb-ft of torque, the Loud Mouth system is money well spent."

nanaki 10-01-2004 08:26 AM

would you say SLP loudmouths say "HEY COPS! COME GET ME! MY EXHAUST IS TOO LOUD!!!"? I was deciding between the Magnaflows and Magnapacks at first and was ready to order the packs. After reading this thread on the SLPs though, I'm kind of wanting these more now. Almost $200 cheaper and seem to offer some nice gains. I just don't want to be harassed by cops all the time. Buddy of mine owned a stealth and he must have gotten 3 tickets or something for his exhaust. I live in Northern, VA, so the cops here are pricks by nature. Another thing, will my car pass emissions and inspection just fine with them?

sigbrown1297 10-01-2004 08:40 AM

SLP after-cat are "street legal". I live in TN, and we have to pass emission tests before you get your annual registration renewed. X-Pipes is another way to get additional hp and work great with after-cat, but just makes sure that if you replace your factor H-pipes with X-pipes, you get the ones with catalytic converters. They also offer race pipes which replaces the catalytic converters for the tracks, but again, it won't be "street legal" and pass emission.

The cool thing about SLP is that normal, low RPM driving they are barely above stock sound levels....it's when you romp on it then they start to wail (it sounds really good too). Just drive like a human and no one will care.
Emissions are not effected by replacement, shoudl be no problem. When you get into the A/F mixture and catalysts that the emissions tests are effected.
Enjoy :D

Right on the money. Just don't have a cop pull behind you at a stop on an uphill grade. But, what are the odds? I love mine!

sigbrown1297 10-01-2004 11:24 AM

I called around the exhaust places where I lived and asked about how much they would charge me to install the after-cat. I got prices from 50-80. Do you think its worth the money spent, time saved, and not having to cut the pipes by taking it to a shop or do it on my own. I have jack and four jacks stands and could try to install them myself, but not being able to raise the car high enough, I would have to cut the factory pipes to get them out. I know that the SLP pipes come in two pieces, but it is short enough to get them installed without a lift? anybody have experience in this or know for sure?

WaterDR 10-01-2004 12:34 PM

If for $80 you can keep your old exhaust in tact, I think it's worth it.

SLP is loud but easy to drive quietly especially if you have just the catback. Most HD Motorcycles that drive around here are MUCH louder than my car and I don't see anyone pulling over either of us.

I have a friend who is a PA State Trooper. He has heard my car and said I would most likely only be stopped by someone if I was driving like an ass and the exhaust becomes an excuse.

Jeremy 10-01-2004 03:47 PM

If you take the cats off then worry about a cop pulling you over. SLP is street legal so if they stop you and give you a ticket, I'm pretty sure it would be thrown out of court. That is unless you were driving like a jerk and all.

WaterDR 10-01-2004 07:41 PM

You have to know the local laws and this is subject to some debate. Many areas REQUIRE a car to have baffles in the exhaust. The SLP does not and neither does the new Dodge SRT-4.

I've had no problems and I've had it a couple of months. Like most have said, drive cool when around other traffic or in the city, but romp it on the open highway...I know I do... :D
