Mufflers
Will changing my mufflers give me a deeper louder sound? My friend has a '96 GT with Flowmaster mufflers (or what he claims) and it sounds really loud and agressive. I don't know whether I should change my mufflers to Flowmasters (no money for entire cat back and o/r pipes) or keep my stock Saleen mufflers...
Also, I read from the MustangExhaust.com site that a lot of people recommend the Flow's with o/r H pipe...will it actually make a difference with or without the H pipe? I know my car has the Saleen X pipe maybe I should just take off a few cats. I don't think o/r pipes are legal in California... :icon_scra

An O/R H with flows will be VERY loud and bad ass sounding, trust me, I had the setup on my old stang. The flowmasters have their own sound, and I like it. Some complain about the 2k rpm drone, but I love it.
Ive got the 1800-2000 drone with my xcelerators w/ H-pipe but I love it. Its usually the RPM im driving at anyways. I really love the sound but I want louder. Im going to switch to the X-pipe for some better results.
I have the MT O/R X-pipe and 40 series flows, and I love it, it's loud... really loud, and performance wise, I couldn't ask for any better.

If your car is a Saleen, and you are short on funds for God's sake leave that puppy stock. You will only detract from the value of the car. That is a special car, unlike our GT's and is already a "tuner" car with a collectible value. The less you do to that thing, the better you are.
Cutting up your catback to weld some flows in for about $150 make take hundreds more off the value of that car. I say leave the stock exhaust alone or swap in an entire catbak becaus eyou can always put the stock on back on. |
I agree leave your saleen stock it already has all the mods
you already have a x-pipe and borla mufflers leave it alone. want it louder get an off road mid pipe and toss the catted one in for exhaust sniffer tests.
so are engine mods excluded as well? What mods can I do to the car to add power without defacing its value or that can be put on without altering/welding things so that taking them off in the future won't be so difficult
Sticky tires if you don't have any :)
I have the pireli p7000 265/35/18 in the back and 255/35/18 in the front I want to upgrade to some kumoh's, I think those are the best bang for the buck. They are cheap and really sticky.
get an SCT tune. get a saleen blower, cams, etc.. i just think its pointless to change your exhuast when it all ready has a good setup, minus your cats.
I get that a lot, even from my dad who tells me to stay stock or go Saleen. But Saleen is so overpriced for their accessories and items. For the price of one of their blowers I can get the kenne bell one that produces more power and psi

You bought the car and that is sorta the corner that you backed into.
I have a few friends who are Porsche owners and they are stuck having the car always served by a certified mechanic. One guy even pays $160 for an oil change. Otherwise, the car looses value. One bud has a 1984 944 with 160k miles. The car is not worth much to begin with, so he does not bother. For the Saleen I would avoid any visual mods at all. No appearance mods (rims, wings, etc) unless they are Saleen. For power mods, things like gears, subframes would be fine, but for other suspension or motor work you should stick with Saleen stuff as much as possible or practical. |

I paid 86.50 for my last oil and filter change. I'm not going back again. I would rather take my car to www.x2cmotorsports.com (they are located pretty close to where I live and my friends have gotten their cars done there for performance parts and stuff. |
dont put mufflers on, wait to get the full cat back.
Just put a flowmaster cat- back on.... I've got one..... Sounds simply amazing... deep and kinda loud but definately a distinct flowmaster sound
I think I'm going to put on a Bassani o/r x-pipe and see where that takes me for now.

Just remember... When inspection comes you'll have to get under her and re- install the stock x pipe.... |
Yea I know. How many cats are on a catted X-pipe? is it possible to just take off some and leave some on?
you can always get an slp x pipe.... they offer the ability to take off the cats and "exchange them for race pipes.... Which is basically the same as a offroad
All of the aftermarket midpipes that ive seen only come with 2 hi-flow cats, im thinking of getting the Bassani o/r X-Pipe from X2C motorsports also, I live pretty close to that place too.
x2c motorsports is a great place. They installed my control arms and they do good stuff to all mustangs. I'm going back sometime this month to smoke my rear tail lights then I'm going to do the X-pipe or gears.
have you gone to the track up in palmdale?? LACR??
No, I haven't taken my car to the tracks yet.
Does anyone know what kind of X-pipe Saleen uses? I saw somewhere on yahoo that they use the Bassani X pipe. Is this true? If it is then I guess I have no reason to upgrade my exhaust system at all since I'm convinced that they have the Borla mufflers. If I do in fact have a Bassani X pipe on my car. Is it possible to take the cats off? |
In your case buy an O/R X-pipe from MAC, UPR, BBK, M/T, or wherever and keep your stock Saleen Mid-section. Plus un-catted mid-pipes are cheap anyways.
