Holy bulge batman! The rim width range for a 285/40/17 is 9.5 - 11.
I think a 255 is about all I would try to get on a 8" wide rim. Anyting bigger is going to look kinda strange.

Just becuase it fits, don't make it right. I am with Hans on this one. 275 is as big as you should go and that is pushing it in my opinion. Keep in mind that the stock rims are not 8" as they are commonally referred to. They are actually 7.5".

You must have had 16's. I knew the 17x8 was listed as an option on the GT but I never thought they put the 16x7.5 on any of them.

At any rate I can solve this discussion. Went to the shed with camera and tape in hand. (I need to sell off some of this stuff I ain't using. LOL)

I test drove a 99 cobra vert with the stock 8" wheels and 275's on it and it drove like pure crap. It had so much sidewall squirm and chassis flex I couldn't believe it.

I had 275 BFG DRs on my stock rims but you dont get to open the tire to its full potential! I wouldnt go more then 255s for a 17x8 rim that is the stock size, some 99 up GTs did come w/16s, 17s being optional.
