cams...stage 1? stage 2?
What's the difference? Their prices are identical...and stage 2 needs to have valve springs put in w/ it...so ...why? Does stage 2 give more hp or what? And can I add valve springs to the stage 1's?? or if anyone knows of an article that would help, that'd be nice.

ive always wondered that 2 are they both fine for daily driving?

I think of the two as drivibility vs hp. The Stage 1's are more user friendly, while the Stage 2's are more agressive and you will have more tune issues.
Stage 1's you can tune pretty well with a mail-order tune and Stage 2's require a dyno tune. Stage 2's are a LOT more expensive by the time you factor in Springs and a tune. I also think Stage 2's might be better suited for nitrous or a blower, but I am not sure about that. I think Stage 1's are good for an easy 15 hp, while Stage 2's are good for 25 but there is also an issue of where the power shows up in the rpm band. I am sure someone will know more then me. |
Also note that if you are planning on getting cams, you will need to upgrade your exhaust system. You will need LT's headers for best results which will set you back about $450-600 for good decent headers. ;) and the installation will run you about 4 more bills if not more. ;) ....just giving you the heads up man. :)
Yes you can add upgraded valve springs to the stage 1's but you will be fine without them. As the lift of the stage 1's are still in the range of what the stock valve springs can handle. The lift on the stage 2's is past the stock valve springs capabilities. |

I'm about to have all this done. Total cost is going to be roughly 3 grand. that's, Not comp 270's but right under, springs, LT's, mid-pipe, install, tune. If you can afford it go with stage 2's, so when you want a blower or dope, you wont be buying new cams. IMO

im goin 2 keep my car n/a and i realy want the sound of the cams over the performance since i dont realy race my stang (once and won by the way) how do the stage 1's sound?

If your going for N/A only, there are specific cams for that. from stages 1 to 3, maybe even 4 depending on what your plans for the car are. I've recently done a lot of research on cams. Next spring I'm installing a Procharger, and therefore a stage 2 cam is suitable for me. Stage 2 is the most highly recommended if you have a blower. Also stage 2 is still good for a daily driver or street. If you do a lot of drag racing, go with the stage 3. Two names i've been looking at are VT cams and Comp Cams. The stage two cams are rated up too 600RWHP, while the stage 3 are 600+ RWHP. Also, I've read that a 2000 GT with a blower, installed stage 2 cams and with a gooooood dyno tune picked up 40HP on pump gas. I'm not too familiar with theory that stage 2 works best with LT headers, but is makes sense. If you have good exhaust flow, and a decent blower, and also install stage 2 cams, you should be extra careful to how much power you are putting to the rear wheels. Remember anything above 400 on the stock block is pushing the limits.

only vt calls there cams "stage one and two" and the stage ones make less power and are dont requier springs like said before. stage 2 make more power and have a lumpier idle.

This is one of the reasons why I am going blower....bigger bang for da buck.
