question about 410 gears

if i put 410's in my 02 mustang is there a kit to calibrate the speedo? or do i
have to buy a programer, or software for my laptop?

TayWolf55 12-21-2004 12:46 PM

If you have a 5 speed, you can get the Dalls Mustangs Speed Calibrater. You can get it at www.ninosport.com Make sure it fits your car though:

Just get a speedcal like stated above. They are like 80-90 bucks. Works fine for me.

DIESEL 12-21-2004 01:45 PM

even for automatics?

WaterDR 12-21-2004 01:49 PM

You really should not drive an auto with different gears w/o calibrating the speedo. You run the risk of damaging the trany. The transmission relies on rpm and speedo data for determining how to shift.

No. An 02 Automatic needs a programmer to recalibrate the speedo.

Recalibration for 4:10s

There is a plug-in to recalibrate your speedo, no chip or programmer necessary, but my car is a 5-speed. I got my mine through Ford Racing. And ditto what MT #1 said regarding automatics; err on the side of doing no harm to that transmission! And, please, no "if" you change ring and pinion ratio; these cars really come alive with new differential gearing. You will not regret it! :nike:

WaterDR 12-21-2004 07:19 PM

Thanks for the backup!

Another thing is that a programmer is a great add-on with an auto when changing gears because you will also firm up your shift points etc...

Islander03GT 12-21-2004 11:39 PM

Not to mention the other wonders that a programmer can do for you!

sbrooks 12-22-2004 04:24 AM

IMO just get a programmer since you can use it for more than just the recal on your automatic

WaterDR 12-22-2004 07:05 AM

Some good points here.

Look at it this way:

1 - Speed Cal - $100
2 - Timing Ajuster - $160

That's $260 plus the pain of installing. A tuner can be had for $375 - $400 new from a dealer and you can calibrate the speedo, advance your timing, PLUS firm up and change your shift points, increase your rev limiter, get rid of the speed gov, clear codes, and the car will run better. So basically, you are paying and extra $125 or so to do all that other stuff and you don't have to install anything. It's a no brainer to me.

madmatt 12-22-2004 08:13 AM

Yeah, do what they said with the programmer, unless you want a dyno tune. You will LOVE the gears when they are done.

gtnumber2 12-22-2004 11:56 AM

i have the pedator tuner, its a great tool to have and the tune gives you a noticeable feel in hp.

How much does it cost to instal 4.10 gears?

WaterDR 12-22-2004 03:51 PM

Prices vary...of course. I think my swap cost me around $550 with all the parts, fluids, and labor. I had mine done at a speed shop. I have heard of prices as high as $1000 and as low as $300.

808GT 12-22-2004 04:18 PM

so, to sum it all up to change gear e.g. 4.10s on a stock 1999 gt 1999coupe...what do i need ???

that depends on how many miles you have on your car. im getting ready to do one in april when the car comes out of storeage. 3.90s $153- eaton posi$400-bearings $90- install$325 includes oil and tranny cooler $150 for an automatic. cooler install $100 grand total =$1218 plus tax. i didnt get axles but if you do $200-250 more.

i have about 63,000 on my 99 gt...

btw, does it affect the top speed ???

03BullittClone 12-23-2004 05:33 PM

If you're in there doing all that stuff, why not axles too?? Those 28s snap like a twig. Believe me, I know. :sad5:

Nofire 12-24-2004 08:17 PM

I was considering either 3.90's or 4.10's for my next mod. how do they affect the mileage of the car? when you're doing 70 on the interstate, what rpm's are you turning?

Silvr04GT 12-25-2004 10:03 AM

I would use this as an good excuse to get a chip or a programmer! That's what I did! :) Oh and remember don't let Ford know you have a chip or warranty = bye bye!

In terms of gas mileage difference I have 3.73s and on the highway I still beat the EPA rating on my window sticker! I wasn't driving all nice either! So that made me laugh! Around town if you're like most Mustang drivers you can't resist having some fun and the gears make it more fun so you'll probably notice a drop! lol!

4.10's will cost ya about 1- 2 mpg. I don't think any of us bought Mustangs for fuel economy, but at $2.00 a gallon, you begin to wonder.

stanger00 12-25-2004 02:41 PM

i picked some gas MPG with because i get up to cruising speed faster. the MPG i picked isnt all that impressive for a five speed but for an auto to 315 320 to a full tank is pretty good. i think thats like 22 23 mpg its better then my usual 18 19.

hahaha yes indeed, i've been told 4th gear on a a 5 speed in these years will only peg out at 105 with 4.10's, that's were your 3rd gear will punch the rev limiter at with stock gears, expect to sacrifice about 600-800rpm at cruising highway speeds(70+)

can a tuner or chip fix this problem or this is the end product of it?

Silvr04GT 12-26-2004 05:02 PM

With a chip or tuner you could remove the governor and raise the rev limiter, so that would in someways solve your problem but my question is how often do most people top their cars out... probably not very often.

This is from a work sheet for a 5 speed. I hope you find it useful!

Disclaimer: These are from a mathmatical chart I received from another enthusiast, to give you an idea.

Since the 99 - 01 1/2 half the T-45 and the later ones have the 3650 the revs change cause the tranny ratios are different but that still gives an idea of what the change between different gears is.

SVTRocket 12-26-2004 09:15 PM

Good point. The numbers are for a T-45 transmission.

Nofire 12-26-2004 09:23 PM

Even if that is from a different transmission, 4th gear is 1:1 on both of them, so the 4th gear numbers should still be correct. and thanks a lot for that chart, I think I will go ahead and get the 4.10's, I don't need to be going that fast anyways.
