Default Build it or Blow it?

Next summer when I start making money again, Im either gonna put a built motor in it with ported heads and cams and maybe run a bigger shot of spray, or I can just put a procharger on it set at 8 pounds and see how long it lasts. What do you guys think? Will the rearend holdup with either of the 2 choices? My car has 60,000 miles on it. It runs great now but I dont want the engine to blow on me when im not financially prepared for it.

Oh yea and If I put a blower on it I will still have the nitrous system installed, but I wont use it for obvious reasons. It would be cool though to have a intercooled procharger with a nitrous plate system. That would be a crazy intake charge.

Build it, then blow it. BUT, dont make it like 10:1 compression ratio either, make it like a low, forced induction friendly compression, so that you can force feed it about 16 psi...

I was in the same situtaion as you sorta.. I wanted new nice heads with cams and a built block and then just put a kb 2.2.. but then I realized that would take way tooo long and I want boost NOW! lol. So now I'm saving for a Mongoose kit. I don't see an 8lb blowing your car.. they put those on stock GT bottom ends all the time over at Modular Power House. They have a very safe tune on them also.. I don't think Tim has lost a engine yet on his setup. I think that he says you can run a little over 400 at the wheels but going any higher can get close to blowing it. I'm gonna get a s/c and then save for a new bottom end and then I can turn up the boost. But going the other route first is the smarter route.. if you can wait that long for the blower

I agree with Csledd,8lb of boost won't blow your engine if tuned right.

Well I talked to the guy I deal with at Delk Performance and he said I should just put a turbo kit on it. I really wanted a turbo in the first place but he said that I would need longtube headers with a blower and thats an extra $800 just for that. He said he can get me a hellion single turbo kit for only a thousand more than a procharger kit. It comes with an exhaust, front suspension, and the turbo kit. Everyone keeps saying Ill be fine at around 420hp at the wheels. I really dont want to wait on the boost so I might just put the turbo on it. I dont know what Ill do with the nitrous then, I might just sell it. I think id rather run 8 pounds now then buy a built block and turn up the boost rather than get a built block then spray it.

Quickly find a new performance shop. He has no idea what hes talking about, and just wants to make an extra 2k selling you a turbo over a blower. You DO NOT need longtubes with a supercharger, AT ALL. If you want them, thats great, but if not, no worries. No, id be VERY weary running my stock shortblock at 420 rwhp, id limit it to about 390-400 imo. Id find someone new, because it sounds like all he cares about is making an extra buck or two, not what is really right.

OMG. A ton of people told me to go to Delk.. so I called them and I hated the way they talkd to me. Well I asked some more people and I know a guy here who has a Saleen (99-04) and he blew his engine so he had them rebuild it. All they did was put forged pistons and some other stuff like that, nothing major. He also got Stage 2 cams. They told him with that and his full exhaust and CAI he'd be at 400 TO THE WHEELS!!! I feel bad for the guy because he had no idea he wouldn't be making that much. He said it definately didn't feel like it. He said he was going to take it down there to get it tuned and it'd be an extra $1000 for the nitrious tune. I dunno where you live but I ended up going to DynoSpeed Racing in Memphis, TN and they are AWESOME. They have built many FI cars... here's a pic of a 2003 Cobra they built..

that makes around 850 rwhp and 870 rwtq

I dunno man, everyone tells me different things about what I should do or whatever. I might just use my own common sense on this one. I think I really should just buy a built block thats ready for all this power. I was thinking that I could probably make more power with a built block, ported heads, cams, and a bigger shot of nitrous. Built block .020 over maybe 20 hp more? ported heads and cams maybe 75hp more? Those together making around 95 more hp with a 200 shot should give me around 600hp. Thats sure to be faster than a 420 hp turbo setup. Yea i know Im prolly wrong about the numbers but Im just guesstimating.

I dunno how much gains you actually get from ported heads.. but as far as cams the most gains I've seen was from stage 3 and it was like 50 rwtq (n/a) and the hp gains was VERY small.

The good thing about going that route is that once you're ready for boost you can do whatever you want

Yea Delk Sucks big time. We had them as our sponsor for a short time until they started messing up. Their customer service sucks and they have no clue what the hell they are doing. I have heard of DynoSpeed from others and have not heard anything bad so far
