Default 5.4 swap in TX.

I know this has been beaten to death, but I am just checking in to see if I'm on the right track.

I've been saving up for this swap, and when my car gets here, i'll jump on it.

Now, I'm still trying to be picky and source a Romeo PI 5.4, but will see how that goes.
I still have 53 days before my car even hits dallas.

Now here is where I am on my parts list.
Please advise.

I have a bone stock 97 GT

5.4 motor(mileage unimportant)
HPS intake
BBK Shorties(will have to trim the passenger side yes?)
AJE tubular K member with A arms(with perches)
Eibach Pro system
Will need a widened H pipe(50 bucks at a shop max)
21Lb injectors
Little bit of tubing for fuel crossover.
Little bit stouter clutch to handle the extra torque.

Now this is what I know.

Now for my nitpicky questions.
This will be the 4th forum I ask on, hopefully it won't turn into a madhouse...

I am not a Drag racer. Nor do I plan to drag race my car. Let's get that out of the way.
So the intent is a nice torquey DD.
Hence the reason the 4.6 has to go.

Now for my questions.
Since my car already has a 10.5 clutch, I should only need an 8 bolt flywheel right?

Since my car is a DD, what gears should I get.
I'm being a bit greedy, I want power and some gas. I have 2.73s now. What do you think, 3.55s max? Or would 3.27-3.31s be perfect?
Oh and a little detail on Cams. I don't want anything really special, something with normal pull will work.
So I am not certain, but I am thinking 5.4 cams may not be what I am looking for, what about normal PI mustang cams? Or since the heads are the same, are the cams the same too, if so that's $100 saved!

For the motor, I know that normal bolt ons do work on the 4.6, will they also work on the 5.4.
IE
75mm TB/plenum
UDPs
If so, will just 4.6 parts fit?
My main concern was the intake, will the 4.6 aftermarket TB/PL fit the hardball'r?

All harnesses minus the fuel crossovers should fit right?

And lastly possibly most expensively...internals.
Now I see a lot of people just doing a drop and go.
But I've heard somewhere that you'll blow rods if you rev it too high.

I am aiming for about the same rev range I have now(1200-6000)
Will I need to upgrade internals to rev that high?
Not that I think I'll need to, but you never know.

I really appreciate you guy's input.
This is my first motor swap, so I'm trying to get it 100% together first.

I'm in Austin...I'll be doing a 3.8L (my base '00) to 5.4L DOHC swap first quarter next year. I'm looking at the Navi motor, either Sullivan or Australian Boss intake, rebuild on the 4R70W, P&P heads, cams (don't know which yet), and ultimately a larger diff/rear. Don't know what to do about the header issue.

All this...unless I can find a hood that will let me use the Navi intake un-modified!!!

3.55 is the max from what I have been told by some people that have the swap I am working on my swap right now. anything better than 3.55 will just spin the tires with absolutly no effort

check the thread at the top of the page about the 5.4 swap it is long as crap but answers just about every question you could ever have

Yup, the sticky literally will have every answer to any question you have.

As for gearing, it all depends on the final combo. If dropping 1st gear to a higher ration (numerically lower), you can give the rear end a lower ratio. Similarly, the same applies if you push the power band up. For example, final drive with the stock 3.31 ratio 1st and 3.55 rear is 11.75:1. With a 2.96 1st gear, to achieve the same final drive, the rear end ratio is 3.92. Once I can get enough cash to put aside (I've been saying this since 06), to make the 3.73s I have work great, my combo will have a Crower Stage 2 PI cam and a TKO600 (which has a 2.96 1st gear). Both should help make 1st gear grip (plus the MM torque arm I plan to install with it). So with my 3.73, the final drive in 1st is 11.05, which is only a 1/4 turn lower than my car with the stock rear and trans. With the added torque the 5.4 makes, and the 1/4 turn lower final drive, first gear will be more manageable but still be torquey as all hell.

like already mentioned, everything is in the sticky, yeah its a ton to read through but great info. if money isnt a problem yeah upgrade the internals. I have been running a full internally stock motor for roughly the past 4 or 5 years and havent slung a rod, if you keep the stock 5.4 cams youll feel the power fall off before your 6k range. but even with that, running it up to 5k and shifting fast it still drops right into the sweet range of the motor and will keep you in the seat. if i remember correctly you can swap heads/ cams over from the gt. your bolt ons will work with the 5.4.
shoot me a pm if youve got questions or what not, im only about an hour outside dallas to the east.

I got a 8 bolt from a 04' cobra

For the motor, I know that normal bolt ons do work on the 4.6, will they also work on the 5.4.
IE 75mm TB/plenum
The stock ones fit perfect. But I put on a accufab plenum, and 75mm throttle body with no issue.

UDPs
I used every thing off the 4.6, it was all a perfect fit.
If so, will just 4.6 parts fit?

All harnesses minus the fuel crossovers should fit right?
Yes.

Yes.
For the flywheel, it'll work with the clutch as long as it has the correct pattern on it. I'm not sure if the Cobra flywheels have the 10.5" pattern on it, as those cars had 11" clutches. A 01-older Cobra will though, although a new flywheel with both patterns isn't too costly.

Bolt ons will work, as well as anything from the 4.6. Remember, the 5.4 is nothing more than a 4.6 block with the deck height raised ~1". So the only things to remember to is account for that deck height change. The stock fuel crossover may be long enough to bridge the gap, as well as the wiring (but you never know).
