Default Working on 2v 5.4 swap on 98 GT. Will post pics, and could use some help!!

So, I have a 98 GT with the 4.6 in it. I have blown the motor. A month ago I bought from a 2001 expedition a 5.4 PI 2v motor. This weekend we started the clean on it, and the process of getting it ready. I now have it cleaned off and engine enamel'd it black. I am in a spot now where I am going to pull the heads off. tomorrow. That said, I was wondering if you guys could help me out!!

I need valve covers. I need a oil pan. Can someone point me in the right direction for what to get? I want it to be something nice. I have the HPS Highballr intake manifold on order. So the Valve covers have to work with that...

Any ideas? I have about 3-400 to spend on these 2 things.

Thanks in advance!

I just got off the phone with summit racing. They have no help to offer for me, as they have no listings for that motor, or the expedition it came out of.

Who do you guys use for performance parts mail order?

What's wrong with the stock valve covers?

If it comes down to it, you can use the stock 4.6 mustang oil pan or get any aftermarket oil pan, they all bolt up.

One of the covers took damage on the extract at the junkyard. But even to that end, I am having trouble properly identifing the motor I have so I can shop with confidence. If the ones off my 4.6 work, I will use them, they look as good as anything I have found online.

The oil pan though, Both that I have have holes in them. So just shop for one for my 4.6 then and it should work?

I just sold my car, to make the last push on this project, so I have to mail order everything. lol.

Thanks!

Alright, I was a noob. I did my homework and this is what is going on. Shiny valve covers don't do anything but look nice. I have the money, but it could be better spent. I only need one valve cover, I am going to get it from Ford new for 100 bucks, or ebay used for 40ish.

The oil pan is 109$ from Ford.

I imagine it is, but should I use this site? http://www.fordparts.com/ ... Is that straight Ford? Or a distributor? So there is the valve cover / oil pan prob fixed for 200ish dollars. That savings will pay for a tire! lol

So, next question. I found debris in the intake port, prompting the heads to be pulled. My only local mustang contact, and a good one, says if I mark the hell out of the timing wheels, lower sprocket and chains, that I do not need to re-time the motor if I put it back correctly. He also says, I can reuse the Head Gaskets, cause they are not one time use.

I want to do this right, its my only car as I sold the other to make this happen. I could really use some input!

well looking at your post i see it is a 2001,and by the pics those are windsor heads.so you have a 2001 windsor 5.4

i used my 4.6 pan on mine.never had a problem.i would not reuse the head gaskets, but that is my own personal opinion.why cant you blow the debris out with compressed air?

There is a huge thread on these swaps here:

https://mustangboards.com/modular-4-...you-opine.html

I am working on this swap myself, but am still in the parts-gathering stage. You will need to bend the tabs inside your 4.6 oil pan to prevent interference with the crank. Moroso / MMR sell pans that I believe will work without modification - though at a hefty premium.

As far as the heads / gaskets / dirt, there's not a lot of room under the hood with these mod motors. I would spend the time and bucks up front to make sure it is right. Gaskets aren't super cheap, but way cheaper than the time and effort to replace after the fact.

I started teh 4.6 breakdown today. I have one issue. How do I de-pressurize the fuel system? I was going to do it how the haynes manual said to do it, but it requires power to the car. It has no battery right now.

I want to blow it out with air, but at the same time I CANNOT fail this project, I am out of money. So I got some ARP Head bolts on the way and I am just going to clean it out right. I will price some head gaskets.

Good news today, I got the entire cooling system out of the car!! And the main wiring harness labled and tucked away!!

In a '98 you should have a return-style fuel system. If I recall correctly, there shouldn't be much pressure in the lines if it has been sitting for more than a few minutes. Returnless cars have a schrader valve that can be used to relieve the pressure in the lines after the car is cool. There are kits to catch the fuel that spits out, but it wasn't much, in my case.

I has been sitting for a year about. I see all the lines, and the filter, I will go over it in the morning and see if I can find it. The downtube header bolts are gonna be my first project in the morning. And unplug one more stubborn O2 sensor! I should be ready by tomorrow night to pull the heart out.

I noticed a few disheartening things today. There is a tranny leak of some kind about 3/4 the way back to the driveshaft. I was not planning anything for the tranny. The car has power steering fluid all over the front of the motor. Got to find a leak there I think too. So far that's all I have found that is gonna slow me down.

Waking up this morning, go into the garage in my pajamas.. Just poking around the power steering reservoir. The fluid is all down the front of the motor. I notice on the cap, it says DO NOT OVERFILL. I have never touched it. It's completely full. So that's better then a leak I guess, I think it has been coming out the top for sure for some time now. We only drove the car 6-7 times before the motor let out.

Alright guys. How the hell do you get the starter motor off??? Lol, I can see the bottom bolt, but not the top one. Also, there is a flange bolt on the exaust right above it that I can not get to.

I am also still hung up on the fuel lines going to the rail on the passenger side. Other then those 3 things, I think I am ready to pull the motor.

I broke mine loose with about a 2 1/2 foot extension going over the top of the k-member. Even worse to get to with long-tubes. Just takes a little patience.

Not trying to burst your bubble or anything, but you should be prepared for a few unexpected expenses with this swap. You will need some modifications to your exhaust. If you do not have an aftermarket intake, you will need one - or you will need adapter plates for the 4.6 intake. The truck intake will not clear the hood. If you go with adapters, you will need to figure out some hardware / spacers / bolts for the alternator mount. A new HPS intake made for the swap will cost you around $700.00 - you can get a used one for a bit less. With the stock cam and heads, the 5.4 will probably run okay with your factory tune, but will need tuning to correct the fuel curve and get the best economy / performance. The car will probably run rich without a tune. Long-tube headers will not fit, unless you get custom ones for the swap.

You did not burst it! I appreciate the input! I have stock headers, I know about grinding down the one side. I do have a aftermarket intake. I have a HPS highball'r, a accufab throttle body, and a accufab plenum in the mail to me tomorrow. Spent a cool grand on that. I have 200 bucks set aside for the dyno tune when I am done!

Besides that 200 bucks, I have 400 more still in cash in my wallet for any other things. I went tonight and got the tools to disconnect the fuel line, I got some u-joint things for my socket to hit those bolts! I got a intake manifold gasket tonight, and some high temp RTV for it. I also have my new mustang oil pan, and new winsor valve cover!

I have a little more money to handle the stuff that pops up, I just need this to go smooth soon. I should have eveyrthing I need but the knowledge of the Ford gods to help with those little things that make it work.

Did you get the Hardballr new? If so, how long did it take them to get it to you? I'll be needing one soon and I heard they only make them in small lots. From what I have read, the TFS heads really wake the 5.4 up, so I am saving my pennies for a pair of those, as well. I figure about 4 - 6 months before I'll have everything I need.

I just thought of this question, I took out the wheel well liner today on the pass side. I have always taken those out of my other cars cause of tire size. Do I need to put that back in? If I do put it in, I will need to purchase the little push pin plastic holders.

Alright. I am so mad I am shaking right now... lol. Damn Ford. That passenger side exaust bolt, and the starter. If I could get one out, I could get the other out. I am so damn close to getting this motor out, to be held up by something so stupid blows my mind. I cannot for the life of me, and this is 6 straight hours on my back under the car, get either of these bolts out. I have extensions, I have swivels head things, I have 2 good extensions that wobble too! I have deep sockets, shallow, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2!! I have tried it all.

There has to be a secret. I give up for tonight I think.

Minute one. So on the last picture, do I need to remove any of that, its AC line. It does not even look like it will flex out of the way.
