01 Bullitt, Starting and Running Issues
 

My roomate's 01 Bullitt is having some issues, I was able to somewhat diagnose it, but I don't have the time to figure out exactly whats wrong with it and fix it, and I don't want to shotgun parts at it....

Ok, he called me a couple hours ago, car mostly doesn't start, he drove home from school fine, and when he tried to leave a friends house, it started having issues. When it does start, it runs extremely rough and if you try to snap the throttle, the car dies and usually won't start again.

No check engine light, but no way to check codes right now. When you turn the ignition on, you don't hear the fuel pump prime, and there is nearly zero fuel pressure. I could only verify by pushing the shrader valve in and hearing only air come out. I tried to check for a relay, but I was unsure of where it would be, I did swap the fuse (20 amp # 14) in the relay box under the hood and no change. The only other thing that I can check and think of at the time is the Fuel Pump Driver Module. I pop open the trunk, and his trunk is full of shit, I pull away the inner liners and see that his FPDM is all beat to shit and the case is cracked. I thought for sure that was the issue.

I called a buddy of mine in parts at a local Ford dealer, and had him look up the module. Not in stock, but I also had him check to see if it was the same as my 01 V6 (since it was there). He said the modules where the same and that they were plug and play with no programing required. Sweet, so I swapped them and still his car does not start, and when it does, it barely runs, and dies easily.

Anyone else have anything else I could have him try? I don't have the time to fix this thing, but he needs to get to school and work, and right now he is SOL.

I think I've heard of this one before. It's caused by those rare Bullitt side skirts and sail panels he should just send them to me and the problem is solved :p

But on a serious note it sounds like the fuel pump to me. It's hard to say for sure without being there. but that's where I'd start. Oh and this might sound dumb but what's the mileage and how old is the fuel filter?

Fuel filter was just changed, and I advised him to look at that area to make sure nothing came undone, but there is no fuel leakage on the ground.

Mileage I'm not exactly sure, but I know its over 60-70K

My haynes says to check three things if the pump doesn't turn on. Which if it's not priming then it's not running.

1. fuel pump fuse located in the engine compartment and relay box. (two fuses?)

2. inspect the constant control relay module (CCRM) This is located in the engine compartment not the trunk. Ill see if I can find exactly where it's located on the Bullitt.

3. check the fuel inertia switch in the trunk. (this you already checked)

Here is how you can test to find out if it's the pump or the CCRM. Obviously you need a voltmeter to test this.

From what I can tell the CCRM is located in the passenger side fender well. You have to remove the fender liner to access it.

With the key turned to run, check Pin 12 and 24 for accessory power. If it’s there, the issue lies past the CCRM. If there’s no power: Check CCRM Pins 8 and 10 for constant 12 volts. Check CCRM Pin 13 for accessory 12 volts. Check CCRM Pin 15 for ground. If 8, 10, 13 and 15 are present (this requires the key to be on), but 12 and 24 are not showing 12 volts, that suggests a bad EEC relay inside the CCRM."

I'll see if he can check it, he does have a digital voltmeter.
