Trick Flow stage 1 cam question
 

Just ordered trick flows stage 1 camshaft for my 2001 mustang GT. Do these cams REQUIRE new valve springs or do they just recommend them. I see their website shows they need upgraded springs, but all my friends are saying stage 1 cams are compatible with stock springs. Just asking because trying to save a little money, any info will help.

Hey man, rpms is whats hard on the valve train and components. If you put the stage 1 cams in and drove the car like a lilltle ole lady then you would be fine, but we all know that ain't gonna happen. Go the extra mile and upgrade your springs, keepers and retainers. The amount of work to go in and replace them later is worth the extra money.
I've been running the Stage 2 Trick Flow cams for over a year now. I brought my setup from Summit with the upgraded springs. Back in late summer, I installed too much foot into the throttle body and broke the intake spring on #5. Took out the piston, both valves and guides, and a piece of the guide stuck in the head (even with upgraded springs) shit happens.
Its worth the extra cash! Good Luck and you will love how the car sounds.

Ok so other then the stage 1 cam i bought i ordered trick flows 2v beehive 208lb valve springs, brand new lifters and a handheld tuner. So i think im pretty well set now, i appreciate the responses guys, i was just curious cuz im not to smart in the automotive world lol. Since your running trick flows stage 2, you know a little about trick flow, do you think stage 1 will drop in with no ptv clearance issues? No one really knows cuz no one i know uses trick flow. I bought the new springs that goes with these cams so i was just curious if you think i would have any issues

duration + lift combine to create PTV issues. Stage 1 isn't likely to have enough duration to hit the slugs but you need to make sure it's timed right to begin with. Degree those cams.

Just as a point of reference,you will not have any piston to valve clearence issures with the Stage 1 cams as long as you install them correctly.

When I pulled the drivers side head off after breaking the valve spring, I noticed some little impressions on top of all the pistons, turns out the valves hit the carbon on top of the piston with the Stage 2 cams (just the carbon) with .036 compressed head gaskets. My motor has 38k on it so its not a lot of carbon on the pistons.

I did not degree my cams because I could not afford the cam gears. I set mine straight up (link to link). A lot of people will file the key ways to degree the cams but I have never liked that idea. If you can afford the gears its the way to go.

Are you going to do the swap on the car or pull the heads? There are a couple of cool little tools out there that will make the install a lot easier.

I am just removing the stock camshaft and springs and replacing them with the stage 1 cam, beehive springs and hydrolic lifters. IM not actually doing the work, kruck50 off of stlmustangs.com is doing the work for me

If i do not order adjustable cam gears.. will it still be able to be tuned? ive been reading a little about these and alot of what im reading says it cant be tuned with stock gears which i dont understand why. Im not looking to hot rod the shit out of my car, just a good enough tune so the car knows its got cams, so my motor dont screw up

Yes sir, you will still be able to tune your car with your flash tuner.

well thank you for all the information tuff.. i went ahead and ordered the trick flow crank gear set... the person installing my cams said it was best to get them so he can degree and adjust the cams. So i appreciate everything.. hopefully these things drop right in with no problems, considering i know have about $1200.00 in parts in all this
