New mods

Well, recently I purchased a new O/R H, an sct tuner, 4.10 gears, and bbk shorty headers. I have the H installed and the car tuned now. Heres my question.

I have about another grand to drop on the car and wanted to know what I would see the most performance from. I am getting gear install quotes around 500 and header install quotes of 300. I was thinking maybe I could get some suspension work done instead of getting these installed. Such as LCA's and lowering springs along with caster camber plates. Would I be able to install these myself? (I can do oil changes and minor engine work). Do you think I would see better performance from the headers and gears or the suspension? If I can do the suspension myself I can still get the gears installed. Also, is the header install a bad one? I heard it takes awhile.

Any input is welcome. Just looking to get an idea of where I can put the grand to get the most value. Also, not looking for nitrous.

Gears, hella more pull. You shoulda gotten your tunes for the gears actually because you gotta have it retuned anyways.

i say gears/headers. honestly, dont take it personal but you really dont have enough power mods to really need any serious suspension mods. if you were to do any suspension mods, just do subframes and lower control arms

Those headers aren't going to help too much anyways since they're shorties.

The gears are where the big help comes from.

Get a set of cams and have them installed. It'd be a bit over a grand after the dyno-tuning required and the install (if you didn't do it yourself) but it'd be much worth it. Especially with the gears.

Sell the shorty headers and forget you ever bought them. They are worthless in all honesty. Longtubes aren't much better.

Gears is probably the largest change you'll see unless you add a power adder. And whoever said you don't have enough mods to do suspension is dead wrong. Handling is always fun, no matter what the power level, and if you're into straight line, you can make up more time on the track with suspension and tires than with a bunch of bolt-ons.

i said he would benefit most from lca and subframes. what else more would he really benefit from on a bolt on GT?

engineman312 10-19-2009 05:50 AM

i'd say definetly install the gears. don't bother with the headers, sorry. if you want to keep going the bolt on route i say get underdrive pullies and a new throttle body/plenum. if you get the tb/p, make sure its an adequate size for you. don't get the big 78mm one because that'll actually hurt your performance.

also, in my opinion, you can never be too early on installing an upgraded suspension and braking parts. subframe connectors, springs and shocks, caster camber plates, and new rotors are allways good.

Danimal1209 10-19-2009 06:34 AM

hmm, I could resell the headers if the install is out of my league. Gears I will do for sure.

How about the install for the suspension mods, can a novice accomplish this with the right tools, patience, and instructions?

You can install springs, lower control arms, and caster camber plates if you have some tools, and can read directions and take your time.

Do the suspension first. No point in installing gears if the increased torque isn't going to get any traction to the ground.

always suspension and braking first. Gears 2nd, bolt-on bits last. That's my view of the gains vs. dollars curve.

You'd be shocked at how much harder you can drive it with a good suspension setup. MM coil over conversion all around, severe duty lower control arms (F&R), subframe connectors, caster camber plates. If you want to get more exotic, add a PHB and Tq arm for really serious rear suspension upgrade.

Danimal1209 10-19-2009 11:43 AM

I have been looking at MM caster cambers and lowering springs. I will have to check into the LCA's. Thanks all.

For the sub frame connectors, I see like 8 different ones on AM. Can you link me a good one? Otherwise I would probably get the MM ones.

97stanger 10-19-2009 12:07 PM

just make sure the subframes are full length and weld in. i suggest the MM ones

Deathdiesel 10-19-2009 04:36 PM

If i were to put sub-frame connectors on, would you say to take off the shitty ford ones for my vert or put them right next to them, or what? Also what do caster camber plates do?

Bullitt5339 10-19-2009 04:38 PM

You have to take the factory ones off, the new ones go right over where they bolt in. My Bullitt had the same ones as the convertible from the factory.

Deathdiesel 10-19-2009 04:57 PM

Would you say it was worth it to swap from stock shit ones to aftermarket?

Bullitt5339 10-19-2009 05:45 PM

most definately. Especially if you go with full lengths. I don't see how the stock ones can do anything, they are only held on with 2 small bolts on each end.

K then i guess it depends when i can get a job. ha.

Suspension and gears would be the way to go

3.8LMustang 10-19-2009 08:57 PM

ahhh yes you should have gotten LT headers :)

97stanger 10-19-2009 10:13 PM

yeah man, seriously save yourself the hassle of putting on the shorties. either go longtubes or keep the stock manifolds

Danimal1209 10-20-2009 06:23 AM

theyre really not worth much? Like 4 hp in a lightly modded mustang such as mine?

Yup, exactly. Save yourself the hassle and trade those for some LTs.

Danimal1209 10-20-2009 08:24 AM

well damn. I might as well sell them and get a few hundred back for suspension work.
