car won't start

joy of joys. i park my car right? shut it off, go inside the house. i go outside, try to start it, all it does is crank. it was running just TWO SECONDS prior. why would it be running one minute, then literally the next minute not start?

throwing no code, sprayed gasoline inside the throttle body, didn't start. let it sit for a while to cool down, didn't start. it pops a couple times, seemingly like it wants to start, but it doesn't. what would cause this?

(i need this car to go to school BTW. i love it.)

spike_africa 08-09-2009 04:44 PM

Start with the basics. Does it have fuel/air/spark. I would also reset the ECU just for shits and giggles.

Leonide 08-09-2009 04:45 PM

how do you reset the ECU?

it had to have getting all 3, fuel, air, and spark because i shut off the car and left it for 30 seconds before i ran back out to start it. i didn't even leave it off for a minute. it was literally 30 seconds before i tried to start it. i drove it 2 1/2 hours prior, so it had all 3.

and it wasn't acting up that i could notice. no hiccups or complaints from it driving home.

Well its time to check them now lol. I would guess something with the pats is cutting fuel out.

maybe... it probably switched randomly. how do i switch it back? is it a literal switch?

EDIT: a red button at the top was found, it was pressed in. the PATS did not engage. still didn't start. unplugged the MAF, didn;t work.where is the ECU on our cars?

spike_africa 08-09-2009 05:08 PM

The PATS is a an anti theft system built into the car and can't be reset.

Start by resetting the ecu. Undo the neg. cable on the battery and turn the headlights on for 5 mins or so. Then reconnect and resetting the ECU is done.

i sprayed starter fluid inside the plenum, and it cranked over and fired, but it quit. so that tells me the car is not getting fuel for some reason. gonna hope resetting the ECU fixes that issue. :)

EDIT: reset the ECU. didn't work. complete failure. fuel pump, pump relay, or a line is clogged or broken. how the holy fuck it could have gone bad just 30 fucking seconds after i shut it off is a fucking mystery to me. today has been frustrating as fuck.

i dont think your key has a chip does it???? if so look into spending 200 to get the stealership to replace the module in ur dash to get it working again

spike_africa 08-10-2009 06:36 AM

Turn the key to the "ON" position like if the car was running and listen for the fuel pump. You should hear the pump turn on and prime the system for a few seconds. If you don't then we know something is up with the pump.

thanks for that, i tried listening for it, but the DING DING DING DING of the goddamned dinger thingy got in the fucking way. gonna get help to listen for it.

where the hell is the fuel pump relay on the 1998 GT? i searched for it, and i got 4 different fucking answers. i want a straight answer from somebody who knows where it is (spike!).

Widowmaker[X] 08-10-2009 04:09 PM

you should try saying something nice about v6's maybe it will start again

Lazerred6 08-10-2009 04:13 PM

get in the car close the door and buckle up then it won't ding and you will be able to hear for the pump

Leonide 08-11-2009 10:03 AM

UPDATE: i changed the fuel pump switch inside my car, the passenger kick panel. didn't work. the fuel switch works fine, i can hear it clicking. at least i know that one is a new unit and works. turns out, the fuel pump quit during those 30 seconds that i shut it off. now i have to spend 200 fucking bucks to fix a unit. figures it would be the most expensive unit to replace. now i gotta spend parts and fucking labor to get it fixed. which could be 300 - 400 total.

FUCK MY LIFE.

Better than dropping the trans twice in one week and then have a coil go bad once it's back on the road.

spike_africa 08-11-2009 03:13 PM

Swapping fuel pumps is not hard at all. Its just a matter of undoing a few connections, then puting a jack under the tank and taking off the tak straps and lowering the tank down enough to open the top and pull the old pump out of there. I swapped pumps in my garage alone with one jack.. Took me just over an hour and a 1/2 and it was my first time ever dropping a mustang fuel tank. If you plan on a power adder down the road now would be a good time to replace it with a highflow pump. What year is your car anyhow I want to say a 98?

i think thats funny. not what happened but how u said it.

fuel pump relay is in the ccrm(constant control relay module) above pass. side fender liner.

try fuel filter.

try checking your inertia switch located driver side trunk behind the liner by your tail light.

fuel pump will shutoff after pressure is up to where it needs to be.

i have a stock 98 fuel pump that i thought was bad (checked everything but the spark plugs. pump wasnt bad plugs were.) if u want it and want to try it yourself your welcome to it just pm and let me know.

Leonide 08-11-2009 07:56 PM

i was debating on getting a highflow fuel pump...might be a good idea.

i was thinking either

or this:
http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/item/BBK-1622

which one would be better?

98bluevert 08-12-2009 04:15 AM

depends which fuel pump you have. correct me if i am wrong i think both of those 97 style you may need the 99 style. 98 was a screwed up year for stuff like this mine is a 99 style.

Get an svt focus pump 255 lph or an aviator pump 270 lph

Bwhipple 08-12-2009 04:46 AM

I've got a barely used SVT focus pump that yiou can have for 50. I used it for about a year until I put in the cobra double pumpers and tank.
