Default 5.4 swap

im going to be doing a 5.4l 2v swap sometime before the end of the year. is there a difference between the f150 and the expedition? either one better to go with? i will keep it n/a so not looking for the lighting or anything. can someone that has done this swap post a list of things u needed for the swap? is it better to go with an aftermarket intake such as the hps or are the adapter plates fine? anything i should look out for? what kind of numbers can the stock engine take? is there anything i should upgrade?

seriously... it's a good idea to read the thread, at least casually. You'll find an immense amount of tech in it. Nonetheless it's evolved into a sort of family of 5.4 swappers from those just starting to those that are done and gone even further and it can be a long tedious read so, feel free to post specific questions in there and we'll cover them. We have answered your questions about every 5 pages or so, sometimes more often.

There is no difference between a f150,e150,expedition,etc... that concerns you for the swap except maybe the front cover which isn't that big a deal.

parts needed... intake, gaskets, fluids and a fitting for the heater line (lowes). The rest is hammering, cutting, welding, bolting, wedging. Nothing advanced in the least. In fact you'd be hard pressed to know the difference when looking from the bottom. Use your 4.6 accessories and oil pan (beat the baffles in the front of the pan down 1/4"). Big (75mm) TB and C&L plenums are worth the investment. Longtubes are coming (see the thread).

<exercise in "and" over-use>
If you do adapter plates I'll hunt you and I'll find you and slap you with a dead fish. I went through a huge amount of **** to get HPS to build the intake and they did a bitchin job and sell it for cheap and it's worth the money so do yourself a 10-30hp favor and grab one up. Adapter plates will destroy your gas mileage anyway so the intake pays for itself pretty quickly.</exercise>

The stock block can take 2000+hp, the stock cranks can take either about 700ish or 1000+ (cast vs forged rough estimates, not hard and fast numbers). Stock rods give up the ghost pretty easily. Upgrade them if you want to use any sort of power adder (or just because really, they're cheap). Stock cast pistons eat **** for strength. Stock lightning pistons are forged and pretty good. Stock bearings are a serious weak point and absolutely should be upgraded for use in a car and above 5500rpm.

Mine made sorta disappointing dyno numbers (300/332 NA) which sucks if you're a dyno racer but, it's a ******* serious bucket of tire shredding mayhem on the pavement. There is sooooo much grunt all the way through the RPM range it's just disgusting. If you don't have cobra brakes... get some. It's getting a lighting blower and nitrous and methanol injection on it now because I've lost my goddamned mind not because it wasn't "fast enough"... **** it's faster than the tires can take most of the time.

In fact, if you ask nicely someone might even forward you the article Dan Simon did ... the one where he whittled out the very first set of plates. He posts in the thread too.

i have almost read that entire link. i learned a lot but it gets really confusing after 260 pages lol. plus there a lot of builds going on at once so i was just looking for a basic list of components needed. i was pretty much always planning on going with the hps intake, just wanted to see ur reaction!!! and i read that sticky about u spending like $5000 on the headers lol, that sucks. i feel for u .

im thinking about doing a f150 engine upgrading rods,bearings and pistons (like u said) and using my pi heads from the stang. as for headers, will the stock 4.6 headers fit on it or should i use the stock 5.4 headers?

how much is that hps intake? as for the tb and plenum, do i use ones that fit 4.6 or 5.4 engine (or are they the same)? basically, are there any parts i cant use that are designed for the mustang. does the 5.4 use COP's? same fuel rails? sorry for all the questions.

The HPS 5.4 intake is 695.
the heads for the 4.6 and 5.4 are the same, so yes your headers will bolt on. will they fit once installed in your mustang? I have no idea, I'm swapping a Crown Vic so I have more room to play with. you can use most of the factory parts if your doing nothing more than just swapping the motor. but as r3dn3ck said, buy the HPS intake. it's worth every penny.
